Book excerpt: Discusses that In 1890 Bryan observed that a rotating vibrating structure tends to have a vibrating pattern that rotates at a rate proportional to the rate of rotation. This is otherwise known as the Bryan effect. Based on this theory a formula, the so-called "Bryan’s factor" was derived to quantify this shift in angular velocity. This study will utilise the linear theory developed in Joubert, Shatalov and Fay (2009, [9]) with an assumption that the rotation rate is constant and much smaller than the lowest eigenvalue of the vibrating system. This theory is used in conjunction with the math mathematical model formulated to determine how to include mass-imperfections and pre-stress using a non-linear theory of elasticity, as well as how to include anisotropic (viscous) damping into an equation of motion using Rayleigh dissipation (see Joubert et al. (2011, [10])). Hence, the problem statement of this research study is to investigate the influence of mass-imperfections and linear anisotropic (viscous) damping on the angle of vibrating pattern and the phase shift of the vibrating pattern of a slowly rotating thin cylindrical body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MEMS Vibratory Gyroscopes provides a solid foundation in the theory and fundamental operational principles of micromachined vibratory rate gyroscopes, and introduces structural designs that provide inherent robustness against structural and environmental variations. In the first part, the dynamics of the vibratory gyroscope sensing element is developed, common micro-fabrication processes and methods commonly used in inertial sensor production are summarized, design of mechanical structures for both linear and torsional gyroscopes are presented, and electrical actuation and detection methods are discussed along with details on experimental characterization of MEMS gyroscopes. In the second part, design concepts that improve robustness of the micromachined sensing element are introduced, supported by constructive computational examples and experimental results illustrating the material.

Book excerpt: This book provides a unified approach for the two versions of Coriolis vibratory gyroscopes: Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) and non-MEMS. It describes a new, differential mode of operation, analyzing the new triple mode gyro—rate, rate-integrating, and differential. The latter provides the gyro with an increased versatility by providing the maximum possible accuracy under changeable motion parameters and environmental conditions. The book also presents computer simulation, experiments, and test results on the rejection of external disturbances, and considers the fabrication processes of MEMS, metallic and quartz resonators. It will interest researchers, scientists, engineers, and students specializing in the field of inertial sensors, as well as engineers of digital control systems, and inertial sensors test-engineers. It can also be used as a reference book when designing vibratory gyros.

Book excerpt: Inertial navigation systems (INS) have been studied extensively to increase their performance and enhance robustness. One critical component of the INS is the gyroscope, which is used for detecting orientation. These gyroscopes are subject to material imperfections and manufacturing defects potentially reducing their ability to detect signals and reduce phase drift. One common type of vibratory gyroscope is manufactured based on MEMS (Micro-electromechanical Systems) technology, which yields small gyroscopes at lower costs. However, with low cost gyroscopes comes a quality trade-off, specifically for inertial guidance systems. For this reason, this work explores the idea of improving the performance of vibratory gyroscopes by combining the input-output response of an ensemble of gyroscopes coupled in a ring fashion. More specifically, bidirectional coupling in both axes is investigated. Numerical simulations and analytical work show that this coupling causes the sum of the response in the synchronized state to have a larger output than an individual gyroscope. This reduces the negative effects of phase drift and positively influences the sensitivity. Numerical and analytical bifurcation diagrams also reveal regions of synchronization for given coupling strength and input rotation parameters. To demonstrate robustness this work focuses on two types of noise, variation in mass and contamination of the target signal. When subjected to this noise, improvement in phase drift is seen when the coupled gyroscopes systems are numerically compared to uncoupled systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coriolis vibratory gyroscopes (CVG) suffer from various error sources including manufacturing imperfections and environmental factors. Most design constraints incorporate having the drive and sense mode natural frequencies equal. This poses a difficult solution called "mode matching" requiring complex and extremely accurate on-chip electronics. The research discussed in this thesis acts as a proof of concept on utilizing well-established phenomena in the field of nonlinear dynamics and vibration in the design of CVG gyroscopes with improved stability against manufacturing imperfections. A significant increase in the sense mode bandwidth is shown by structurally tuning the system to 2:1 resonance between the sense and drive modes respectively. A simplified mathematical model of a two-degree-of-freedom system, having quadratic nonlinearities, is obtained and compared qualitatively to more complex models from literature. Experimental results verify numerical simulations, confirming the hypothesis. Additional bandwidth enhancement possibility is established through simple feedback of nonlinear coupling terms obtained from mathematical models.

To meet the customer's desire for safety, convenience and vehicle economy, and to satisfy environmental standards, microsystems play a critical factor. Microsystems applications (MST) have already resulted in improved performance and better value for money. But the advances implemented reveal only the beginning of a revolution in the vehicle sector, which aims at a complete transition from the mechanically driven automobile system to a mechanically based but ICT-driven system. The selected contributions from AMAA 2003 treat safety (both preventive and protective), powertrain (online measurement and control of engine and transmission subsystems), comfort and HMI (systems to enhance the comfort of passengers and human machine interface issues), and networked Vehicle (all aspects of intra car systems and ambient communication networks).

Book excerpt: Since 1995 the annual international forum on Advanced Microsystems for Automotive Applications (AMAA) has been held in Berlin. The event offers a unique opportunity for microsystems component developers, system suppliers and car manufacturers to show and to discuss competing technological approaches of microsystems based solutions in vehicles. The book accompanying the event has demonstrated to be an efficient instrument for the diffusion of new concepts and technology results. The present volume including the papers of the AMAA 2005 gives an overview on the state-of-the-art and outlines imminent and mid-term R&D perspectives. The 2005 publication reflects – as in the past – the current state of discussions within industry. More than the previous publications, the AMAA 2005 "goes back" to the technological requirements and indispensable developments for fulfilling the market needs. The large part of contributions dealing with sensors as well as "sensor technologies and data fusion" is exemplary for this tendency. In this context a paradigm shift can be stated. In the past the development focused predominantly on the detection and processing of single parameters originating from single sensors. Today, the challenge increasingly consists in getting information of complex situations with a series of variables from different sensors and in evaluating this information. Smart integrated devices using the information deriving from the various sensor sources will be able to describe and assess a traffic situation or behaviour much faster and more reliable than a human being might be able to do.
