Book excerpt: Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are an invasive species known to detrimentally affect native unionid mussels, a highly imperiled group of organisms. Zebra mussels infest (directly attach to) the shells of unionid mussels and compete with them for food as both unionid and zebra mussels are filter feeders. Previous studies, mostly from the northeastern US, have shown that both competition for food (indirect interaction) and zebra mussel infestation (direct interaction) can affect the body condition of unionid mussels. However, no study has examined this in Central Texas, the southern edge of zebra mussel distribution nor compared the impact of zebra mussel presence (in the same system as unionid mussels) and infestation (direct attachment to unionid mussel shells) on glycogen storage under controlled conditions. Hence, the objectives of this study were to 1) examine the impact of infestation versus presence of zebra mussels with experiments in the laboratory and 2) collect data on glycogen concentrations of unionid mussels at different field sites with and without zebra mussels. In the experiment, tissue samples were collected after 30 days from treatment tanks where 1) Threeridge (Amblema plicata) were artificially infested with zebra mussels, 2) zebra mussels were present with their biomass being comparable with the first treatment (44 ± 14 g wet biomass), but shells of A. plicata were not infested, and 3) control tanks where zebra mussels were absent. Tissue samples from A. plicata were collected from 20 individuals at each of the 10 field sites. Results from the experiments showed zebra mussel presence and infestation reduced glycogen 38% and 66% respectively. Results from the field supported these findings. Variation in glycogen concentrations of mussels collected in the field was best explained by chlorophyll-a concentrations (coarse measure of food resource) and total number zebra mussels. A larger percentage of infested mussels were burrowed in the lab experiment compared to control mussels, potentially to avoid unfavorable conditions created by both the presence and infestation of zebra mussels. Reduction of glycogen stores by zebra mussels can reduce short- and long-term fitness of unionid mussels which needs to be considered when creating and implementing management practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction and rapid spread of the zebra mussel in North American waters has caused great concern among industrial and recreational users of these waters. This bivalve mollusk is a biofouler that attaches to any firm substrate (e.g. rocks, piers, water intake pipes, boat hulls) and has already created significant problems for raw water users such as water treatment plants and power plants. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts and Control provides essential information regarding the biology of the zebra mussel in North America and Europe, presents case studies of environmental and industrial impacts, and outlines control strategies. Summary articles detail its life history, origins, and morphology. The book also examines techniques used to culture and maintain this organism in the laboratory. Thirty-two color plates illustrate some of the dramatic problems created by the explosive population growth of this species. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts, and Control is an important resource for ecologists, conservationists, environmental consultants, water quality engineers, regulatory officials, power utilities, and libraries.

Book excerpt: Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are highly invasive freshwater bivalve mollusks, introduced to the United Sates in the late 1980's, and known for forming dense colonies that can encrust boat hulls and motors, damage docks and marinas, and occlude raw water lines and intake pipes. In 2009, zebra mussels were discovered in Lake Texoma, TX/OK and have since infested twenty other lakes in Texas. Never before have zebra mussels been found in waters as warm as those in Texas, leading scientists, resource managers, and regulatory agencies to question the pervasiveness and persistence of this species in warm southwestern water bodies. To that end, this dissertation describes the results of a long-term study of zebra mussel populations in three Texas reservoirs with three main objectives: (1) assessing the mussel's population dynamics in warm water bodies by analyzing their growth rates, reproductive periods, and juvenile settlement patterns to elucidate the bases for observed zebra mussel population collapses; (2) examining the relationship between mussel veliger larva size and juvenile settlement and identifying possible temporal correlations between the presence of settlement-competent pediveligers in plankton samples with new juvenile settlement; and (3) evaluating the variation in the dry tissue weight of zebra mussels throughout the year in order to determine the impacts of elevated temperatures on body condition as a contributing factor to acute population declines. Collectively, this research will serve to better inform natural resource managers, aquatic ecologists, and those using raw water in developing management strategies, financial investments, and infrastructure changes to mitigate the consequences of zebra mussel invasion and fouling in warm southwestern United States water bodies.

Book excerpt: The introduction and rapid spread of two Eurasian mussel species, Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel) and Dreissena rostriformis bugensis (quagga mussel), in waters of North America has caused great concern among industrial and recreational water users. These invasive species can create substantial problems for raw water users such as water treatment facilities and power plants, and they can have other negative impacts by altering aquatic environments. In the 20 years since the first edition of this book was published, zebra mussels have continued to spread, and quagga mussels have become the greater threat in the Great Lakes, in deep regions of large lakes, and in the southwestern Unites States. Quagga mussels have also expanded greatly in eastern and western Europe since the first book edition was published. Quagga and Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts, and Control, Second Edition provides a broad view of the zebra/quagga mussel issue, offering a historic perspective and up-to-date information on mussel research. Comprising 48 chapters, this second edition includes reviews of mussel morphology, physiology, and behavior. It details mussel distribution and spread in Europe and across North America, and examines policy and regulatory responses, management strategies, and mitigation efforts. In addition, this book provides extensive coverage of the impact of invasive mussel species on freshwater ecosystems, including effects on water clarity, phytoplankton, water quality, food web changes, and consequences to other aquatic fauna. It also reviews and offers new insights on how zebra and quagga mussels respond and adapt to varying environmental conditions. This new edition includes seven video clips that complement chapter text and, through visual documentation, provide a greater understanding of mussel behavior and distribution.

Called zebra mussels, these organisms can cause people to cut their feet, filter out food for larval fish, and more. Through reading about how zebra mussels came to these freshwater lakes, readers learn what invasive species are and how they can cause great harm to native ecosystems. Facts about the spread of zebra mussels and efforts to stop this spread introduce readers to conservation and other science curriculum topics. Full-color photographs, fact boxes, and maps showing zebra mussel distribution augment readersÂ’ understanding.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starvation effects on dry tissue and shell biomass were investigated in the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, at 5, 15, and 25?C. Subsamples of 30 individuals were examined daily for mortality. A second group was periodically randomly subsampled for dry tissue and shell weights. Extensive starvation tolerance in D. POLYMORPHA is associated with ability to greatly reduce metabolic demand. As this capacity is maximized at low temperatures, mussels may survive winter months with minimal energy store reduction. Extensive tolerance makes starvation impractical for mitigation of D. POLYMORPHA fouling.
