Book excerpt: This document looks at the experience of the Canadian economy and explains some of the structural changes, during the period 1967-86, by the use of a small macroeconometric model. This model is disaggregated into three sectors: goods, commercial services, and noncommercial services; and on this basis, and in terms of sectoral variables within limits dictated by the availability of sector-specific data in National Income Statistics, it provides a test for analyzing the short-run dynamics underlying the long-term structural change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors explore four central themes: the locational impacts of the openness of the Canadian economy, Canada's relatively simple economic geography in terms of regional variations in resources and urban development, the problems of keeping pace with rapid advances in technology, and the role of government in maintaining a national market and assisting economic development. They outline the essential elements of Canada's contemporary economic geography, highlight the origins and spatial imprint of change in the Canadian economy, and provide an assessment of Canada's participation in significant international patterns of economic change. Canada and the Global Economy is concerned not only with the economic size and location of consumption and production but also with institutional changes and shifts in employment, the sectoral composition of economic activity, and the organizational structure and locational behaviour of particular industries and firms. Special attention is given to the technological development of both established industries and new service and manufacturing activities. A timely addition to the field, it provides a geographic perspective on significant changes in jobs and types of work that result from the transformation of economic activities. Contributors: Trevor J. Barnes (UBC), John N.H. Britton (Toronto), James B. Cannon (Queen's), William J. Coffey (Montréal), J. Tait Davis (York), Geoffrey Dobilas (Toronto), William C. Book excerpt: This study is aimed at estimating the pattern and magnitude of worker and job reallocation, in both the long and the short run, as part of the dynamics of the market economy. It addresses such questions as: Have there been shifts in the relative importance of different sectors and industries? What effects do the exit and entry rates of plants have on the release and hiring of labour? How extensive is the employment expansion and contraction of continuing firms? How important is firm size in the process of job gain and job loss? How significant are worker separations? What is the relationship between form-related job turnover and worker separations? Do `trade-sensitive' industries experience less or more employment change than other industries?.

Book excerpt: From the Foreword: The unstable performance of the Canadian economy in the 1970s and the emergence of apparent problem areas of a persistent nature have led to widespread concern over Canada's economic future. Whether or not these problems are due to structural changes or cyclical phenomena is difficult to determine at the present time because of the amplitude of the recent business cycle and the occurrence of unusual events in the international economy....The present study is designed to review economic developments in Canada in recent years and in the process disentangle cyclical from structural changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his study of Canada, John A. Stovel examines the changes in that country's balance of payments and balance of trade from confederation to the present day, including as part of his examination historical, statistical, and theoretical points of view. The author also reexamines critically--and finds himself in sharp disagreement with--Jacob Viner's classic in the field, Canada's Balance of International Indebtedness, 1900-1913, which has long been considered the definitive analysis of the subject. Developing in Part I an eclectic theory of international balance of payments, and in Part II concentrating on the Canadian balance of trade and balance of payments in relation to economic developments preceding World War I, Stovel carefully prepares the foundation for a critique of Viner's analysis of the period 1900-1913. Discussing the inadequacy of the Mill-Taussig theory and its empirical verification, and observing the extent to which the newer theoretical developments have afforded increased understanding, Stovel criticizes Viner's statistics and the use to which they were put. He delineates with telling clarity the mutual interaction of many elements in cyclical growth development, as opposed to the oversimplified and inadequate causal links of the earlier theory. In addition to the wealth of analysis of the earlier period, the author investigates the interwar period, with the postwar boom and the depression of the thirties, presenting a careful analysis of the structural changes in the balance of payments during this period as well as indicating the change in Canada's relation to the United States and Great Britain. The concluding section of the book deals with the period following World War II, and the author indicates the possible lessons to be learned from Canada's experiences and the improvements in government policy that have taken place, especially with respect to exchange rates.

Book excerpt: Very slow growth in the US in 2001 that included a collapse in demand for electronic products, and the strong appreciation of the Canadian currency in 2003-2006 have combined to reduce employment in the sector in 2006 to 8.5 per cent below the level of 2000, and real Gross Domestic Product of the sector by more than 2.5 per cent. [...] To illustrate the importance of manufacturing to the economy, we have employed our econometric model of the economy to simulate the impact of a $10 billion (3.3 per cent) increase in manufactured exports in each year of 2003-2006. [...] Looking back to the years since 1970, there is a record of volatility in manufacturing, with earlier sharp episodes of downsizing (typically when the US economy was in recession as at the beginning of the 1980s and 1990s), interrupting periods of growth, including from the mid-1990s until the recent downsizing began. [...] Still, the magnitude of the simulation results and character of real, inflation and financial impacts are consistent with the widespread impression that the appreciation has played a major role in the recent poor performance of the manufacturing (and other goods-producing) industries. [...] Notwithstanding the depreciation of the US dollar versus that of the Canadian, the US share of Canadian imports of manufactures fell sharply in 2003-2006.
