Book excerpt: Parks and protected areas provide important services to nature and society. Park managers make difficult decisions to achieve their diverse mandates, and need current, relevant, and rigorous information. However, effective use of research provided by social scientists, natural scientists, local people, or Indigenous people is an ongoing challenge. Through case studies, this book examines knowledge mobilization in parks and protected areas, with a focus on successes and failures, barriers and enablers, diverse theoretical frameworks, and structural innovations. This book embraces the generation and use of knowledge, especially natural science, social science, local knowledge, and Indigenous knowledge, in relation to policy, planning, and management of parks and protected areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a profound geographical description and analysis of Central Asia. The authors take a synthetic approach in a period of critical transformation in the post-soviet time. The monograph analyzes comprehensively the physical and human geography as well as human-nature interactions of Central Asia with focus on Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Natural processes are described at a systemic scale, focusing on ecological impacts and consequences and contemporary human adaptations and organization. It also discusses in which ways the human organizations try to apply solutions for their needs such as security, territorial management and resources renewability, material and functional needs, identity elaborations, culture and communication. The Geography of Central Asia appeals to scientists and students of regional geography and interested academics from other areas such as social, political, economic and environmental studies within the context of Central Asia. The book is also a very useful resource for field trips into this area.

Book Synopsis Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers by : Jacob Bear
Download or read book Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers written by Jacob Bear and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal aquifers serve as major sources for freshwater supply in many countries around the world, especially in arid and semi-arid zones. Many coastal areas are also heavily urbanized, a fact that makes the need for freshwater even more acute. Coastal aquifers are highly sensitive to disturbances. Inappropriate management of a coastal aquifer may lead to its destruction as a source for freshwater much earlier than other aquifers which are not connected to the sea. The reason is the threat of seawater intrusion. In many coastal aquifers, intrusion of seawater has become one of the major constraints imposed on groundwater utilization. As sea water intrusion progresses, existing pumping wells, especially those close to the coast, become saline and have to be abandoned. Also, the area above the intruding seawater wedge is lost as a source of natural replenishment to the aquifer. Despite the importance of this subject, so far there does not exist a book that integrates our present knowledge of seawater intrusion, its occurrences, physical mechanism, chemistry, exploration by geo physical and geochemical techniques, conceptual and mathematical modeling, analytical and numerical solution methods, engineering measures of combating seawater intrusion, management strategies, and experience learned from case studies. By presenting this fairly comprehensive volume on the state-of-the-art of knowledge and ex perience on saltwater intrusion, we hoped to transfer this body of knowledge to the geologists, hydrologists, hydraulic engineers, water resources planners, managers, and governmental policy makers, who are engaged in the sustainable development of coastal fresh ground water resources.

Book Synopsis Greenhouse Effect and Sea Level Rise by : Michael C. Barth
Download or read book Greenhouse Effect and Sea Level Rise written by Michael C. Barth and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winston Churchill, whose output as a writer was so prodigious that one might reasonably wonder whether he was paid by the page, was him self put off by long works. As prime minister of Great Britain, he once pushed away a report from a junior minister, observing, "This paper, by its very length, defends itself against the risk of being read." No doubt some laymen will glance at the study that follows and be deterred from further consideration by the fact that the study is a scien tific one. If that is a hurdle for you, I hope you will join me in getting over it, because, if you do, you will find that the authors have quite a story to tell. That story is about change-the possibility that the climatic patterns of the world are in a transition to warmer weather that could lead to a rise in the sea level. You may not have thought much about the sea level previously; it was something we took for granted. But since we have taken it as a given for so long, the adjustments we may have to make will be profound. When you stop to think about all the areas of our lives that could be affected by climatic change, you will be amazed: we have planned our cities, developed our manufacturing techniques, and chosen our en vironmental protection strategies on the assumption of a stable seaJevel.
