Book Synopsis The Impact of Nitrogen Deposition on Natural and Semi-Natural Ecosystems by : S.J. Langan
Download or read book The Impact of Nitrogen Deposition on Natural and Semi-Natural Ecosystems written by S.J. Langan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-07-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date synthesis of the understanding of the interaction between the emission of nitrogen, its deposition and impact on the most important components of natural and semi-natural ecosystems. The work consists of contributions from internationally renowned research scientists. Individual chapters deal with the factors and processes related to nitrogen deposition and soils, non-forest vegetation communities, forest ecosystems, and surface waters. The assessment of these impacts is discussed in terms of setting critical loads. The book is aimed at researchers, advanced course students and policy makers/advisors involved with aspects of the impact of air pollution.
Book Synopsis Effects of Enhanced Nitrogen Deposition on Upland Vegetation Using Open-top Chambers by : I. D. (Ian) Leith
Download or read book Effects of Enhanced Nitrogen Deposition on Upland Vegetation Using Open-top Chambers written by I. D. (Ian) Leith and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study is designed as a 3-year project to quantify the magnitude of effects of current inputs of fixed N (as wet deposition NO3- NO4+ and dry deposition NO2, NH3 and HNO3) over seminatural vegetation, e.g. for the UK uplands and heathiand. This report summarises work for year I, and so is at an early stage in the work. Simulated mist containing additional NH4 NO3 applied at a rate of 60 kg N ha-1 yr-1 stimulates above ground biomass production in dwarf shrubs and upland grasses by approximately 80-90%. No significant effect on root growth was found in any of the 4 species by increased N application. Therefore high N deposition alters biomass allocation in the upland species examined. Application of high N treatment significantly increased flower production in the dwarf shrub E. cinerea but not in either of the grasses. Changes in root/shoot ratios were found between species with E. cinerea and E. vugimtum having increased root partitioning. This may reflect the requirement of these ...

Book Synopsis Atmospheric Ammonia by : Mark Sutton
Download or read book Atmospheric Ammonia written by Mark Sutton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropogenic emissions of ammonia cause a host of environmental impacts, including loss of biodiversity, soil acidification and formation of particulate matter in the atmosphere. Under the auspices of the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution, around 80 international experts met to review the state of scientific knowledge. This book reports their analysis. It concludes that threshold levels for ammonia effects have been underestimated and sets new values, it assesses the independent evidence to verify reported reductions in regional ammonia emissions, and it reviews the uncertainties in modelling ammonia, both in "hot spots" and at the regional scale.
