Book excerpt: This study examines the role of academy training and fieldwork on police officers' racial attitudes. A secondary dataset based on a survey of 446 police recruits taken at three time periods, including pre-academy training, the end of academy training, and after one year of employment at respective police agencies was utilized. Findings revealed that although the training academy had no effect on police officers' racial attitudes, the effects of fieldwork increased negative racial attitudes towards people of color. In addition, higher educated police recruits were less likely to support equality in policing when compared to less educated police recruits. However, racial attitudes changed over time. After one year of employment, fieldwork increased racially biased attitudes for less educated police officers. In tum, higher educated police officers were more likely to support equality in policing when compared to less educated police officers after fieldwork. Limitations and recommendations are included. Book excerpt: The training and education of police officers has recently come into question by many facets of the American general public and the mass media as well. Empirical research into the effects of police academy teaching methods is minimal. This study sought to assess the perceived effectiveness of problem-based learning (PBL) teaching strategies within police training academies in Michigan and sought to measure the effects of PBL strategies on the MCOLES Police Officer Licensing Examination mean scores in Michigan. A quantitative approach was utilized to compare the Michigan Police Officer Licensing Examination mean test scores between academies that formally adopted Problem-Based Learning (PBL) teaching strategies and police academies that have not formally adopted PBL (NPBL) teaching methods. Examination mean scores from official state records for a 16 year period (1999-2014) were statistically analyzed. The PBL trained police officers were found to have statistically significant higher scores overall on the licensing examination. In addition, the perceptions of 231 Michigan police officers on their academy experiences were collected using an electronic survey to study the effects of PBL and NPBL teaching methods. The officers opined on their levels of agreement regarding seven areas of their academy education: the level of the PBL instruction provided, their acquired problem-solving skills, their acquired critical thinking abilities, their acquired communication skills, their level of satisfaction of their academy classroom experiences, their beliefs that the education prepared them adequately to perform the requisite job tasks of a police officer in Michigan, and their overall satisfaction with their academy. The officers from the PBL police academy provided statistically significant higher levels of agreement than the NPBL academy officers in all seven areas. Comments on three open-ended questions were evaluated to discover common themes. The officers provided their observations on the areas that were most and least valuable during their academy training, along with recommendations for change. The police officers identified the key factors of their academy training to be the actual learning methodologies employed, their individual classes, and practical scenario exercises. Recommendations for academy directors, instructors, and curriculum development specialists are provided.

Book excerpt: In 2007, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) redesigned their Academy curriculum to fit the needs of the 21st century police officer (Incontro et aI., 2008). Part of the redesign is an evaluation of existing programs including the Academy Training Program (ATP). Academy recruits that do not pass the physical fitness requirements of the Academy are placed into a one-month intensive fitness-training program that enhances the recruits' physical performance thereby enabling them to rejoin the sixmonth Academy program. The physical training assists police officers in mastering skills that not only buffer them against adverse effects of job-related stress and trauma but also reduce worker's compensation due to work related injuries or disability. Due to past legal action with regard to discrimination and physical fitness standards/cut offs, the development and maintenance of a physical fitness program that is sensitive to discrimination while maintaining performance standards for police training recruits is crucial (Brooks, 2001). Utilizing Logistic Regression, the aim of the current study is to analyze participation in the ATP on attrition rates and the variable of gender. Results of the current study will be used to provide information on police training in the area of physical fitness.

Book excerpt: The Turkish National Police converted its 9-month Police Training Schools to 2-year college degree programs in 2001 in their pursuit to improve the quality of police officers' job performance, police job preparedness levels, and the police service as a whole. The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual benefits of this higher education policy by empirically measuring and comparing the job preparedness and job performance of police officers with higher education and police officers without higher education. This study consists of two quantitative parts. The first part measured the job performance construct with multiple indicators, including performance evaluation scores, numbers of received official awards, and appreciation letters. The second part of the study measured the perception of officer's job preparedness levels through a self-report survey. The structural equation modeling technique was utilized to evaluate the latent constructs. A response rate of 55.5% was attained--500 out of 900. The study found that there were statistically significant positive relationships between police officers' level of education and job preparedness, as well as between police officers' level of education and job performance. Statistically significant relationships between jurisdiction sizes, assignment type, and perception of job performance with job performance and preparedness were also found. However, no significant relationships between gender, age, and marital status were identified with job performance and preparedness. Among the variables, education had the strongest influence on officers' job performance and preparedness. In addition, a negative relationship exists between officers' perception of self-performance ratings and observed job performance ratings, suggesting that officers that rated their job performance levels higher were actually the ones with lower observed job performance ratings. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on criminal justice and public policy not only in Turkey, but also internationally.

Book excerpt: Fitness and musculoskeletal injuries are a major health concern among United States law enforcement personnel. The objectives of this study were twofold: 1) to compare the effects of wearing work gear and not wearing work gear during job related specific activities; and 2) identify the negative effects of the required work equipment on law officials and exploring methods to decrease the negative effects. There is an undeniable prevalence of law officials and back issues and other musculoskeletal complications which presents an interrelated research and field test environment. This study leverages research to help advance the knowledge of law enforcement performance, and injury prevention to provide a solution to alleviate or diminish the prevalence of numerous musculoskeletal injuries. A study had shown 62 % of law enforcement officials suffered from low back pain as a result of the duty belts worn (25). The purpose of this current study was to compare the Academy cadets' fitness scores absent of equipment and wearing the fully equipped duty belts in relations to job performance. Police Officers and Sheriff's Deputies in training completed a Regional Law Enforcement Academy that consisted of 33 participants (24 Males and 9 Females). Descriptive statistics (age, height, weight) for all cadets were (29.5 +7.5 years, 174.3 + 7.0 cm, and 97.7 + 25.5 kg), males (28 6.4 + 6.5 years, 1775.8 + 5.9 cm, and 99 + 27.8 kg), and females (33.6 + 8.8 years, 167.2 + 4.3 cm, and 94.4 + 19.4 kg). All cadets completed the Academy's standardized fitness protocols, the outdoor tactical obstacle course, and 5-10-5 Pro Agility while wearing a fully equipped duty belt or no duty belt. Results of the study had revealed no huge significant impact of the duty equipment on human anatomy and job performance skills.
