This program is designed to accelerate a soldier's progression to tank commander by fostering early development of gunnery and related skills. The objectives of this research were to (1) determine if ET soldiers develop knowledge and skills beyond those of their normal track (NT) cohorts, particularly in the area of gunnery under both normal and degraded tank fire control system modes, (2) evaluate the degree of similarity between Et soldiers' and tank commanders' aptitude, interest, and temperament profiles, and (3) examine the validity of selected Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and Project Alpha Predictor Battery (PAPB) scales for forecasting performance during one station unit training (OSUT). Performance measures were developed to reflect the areas emphasized by the ET program of instruction (POI), the NT POI, and aspects common to both POIs. These measures were administered to 83 ET soldiers and 83 NT soldiers matched on cognitive and psychomotor abilities. ASVAB and Project A predictor battery (PAPB) performance data were gathered for these soldiers and 41 Noncommissioned Officers (NCOs). On computerized armor training-device-based measures of gunnery performance, ET soldiers were more accurate and made fewer system management errors than did NT soldiers. (sdw).

Book excerpt: As part of the Skills Selection and Sustainment (S3) program, this research evaluated the potential effectiveness of spatial, psychomotor, and leadership scales as additional selection criteria for the Excellence in Armor (EIA) program. The S3 predictor tests were administered to 1,642 One Station Unit Training (OSUT) soldiers at the Fort Knox reception station. In addition, 479 19K (M1 tank crewmen) OSUT soldiers were given an engagement tank gunnery test on the high-fidelity Institutional Conduct of Fire Trainer (I-COFT). The I-COFT test included offensive and defensive engagements fired in normal and degraded operational modes. The primary analysis evaluated I-COFT speed and accuracy as a function of S3 spatial/psychomotor scores. The S3 spatial/psychomotor tests were a strong predictor of simulated tank gunnery performance, yielding a correlation of .54 with I-COFT speed/accuracy. The 2-1/2-month interval between the predictor and criterion tests suggests that the relationship should remain stable over time, and the relationship shrank only slightly when the EIA soldiers were given additional training. The results indicate that including the S3 tests in the EIA selection process would result in EIA graduates with stronger gunnery skills. Keywords: Personnel selection, Gunnery prediction, Unit conduct of fire trainer, Performance(human). (sdw).

Book excerpt: A critical issue in planning military training is in estimating the requirements for initial and refresher training, The present research investigated the learning and retention of a subset of eight armor tasks selected to represent tasks that vary in length, complexity, and extent of practice in operational units. Two data collections were conducted. One collected performance data from soldiers in operational units; the other utilized soldiers attending One Station Unit Training (OSUT) in Armor Military Occupational Specialty (19E). Soldiers in the operational unit sample had been out of OSUT entry training for up to 72 months. The operational unit soldiers took a one-time performance test on all eight tasks. Results were consistent with previous skill retention research. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict the slopes of the retention function for each task for the combined sample. The results of the OSUT, unit, and combined samples support a representation of the skill retention curve in which a rapid decay occurs soon after training with little change in performance for samples tested later. Key words: Skill learning, Training, Armor, Retention(psychology), Army training, Armor training, Job performance, Modeling.

Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OSUT is a training concept which is designed to qualify, motivate, and indoctrinate the United States (US) Army trainee in his chosen branch. The program is characterized by one station and one set of cadre for the trainee; training to critical entry level skills; integration of normal basic combat training (BCT) and advanced individual training (AIT) subjects into a single training cycle; and requiring less time to achieve standards commensurate with entry level skills for the trainee's first unit of assignment. In June 1974, the 16-week OSUT infantry (IN) program was implemented at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Experience from this program led the United States Army Infantry Center (USAIC) to develop a 12-week OSUT (IN) program specifically designed to produce an initial entry infantryman capable of performing a minimal set of critical tasks identified by the USAIC and approved by Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).

Book excerpt: The U.S. military does not believe its soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines should be engaged in combat with adversaries on a "level playing field." Our combat individuals enter engagements to win. To that end, the United States has used its technical prowess and industrial capability to develop decisive weapons that overmatch those of potential enemies. In its current engagement-what has been identified as an "era of persistent conflict"- the nation's most important weapon is the dismounted soldier operating in small units. Today's soldier must be prepared to contend with both regular and irregular adversaries. Results in Iraq and Afghanistan show that, while the U.S. soldier is a formidable fighter, the contemporary suite of equipment and support does not afford the same high degree of overmatch capability exhibited by large weapons platforms-yet it is the soldier who ultimately will play the decisive role in restoring stability. Making the Soldier Decisive on Future Battlefields establishes the technical requirements for overmatch capability for dismounted soldiers operating individually or in small units. It prescribes technological and organizational capabilities needed to make the dismounted soldier a decisive weapon in a changing, uncertain, and complex future environment and provides the Army with 15 recommendations on how to focus its efforts to enable the soldier and tactical small unit (TSU) to achieve overmatch.

Book excerpt: TRADOC directed that a test be conducted to determine the feasibility of replacing the current 16/17-week Basic Combat Training (BCT)/Advanced Individual Training (AIT) program with a 12- to 15-week One Station Unit Training (OSUT) concept. The TRADOC test plan included a requirement for an attitude survey by the Army Research Institute (ARI) to assess trainee attitudes toward OSUT and to compare the attitudes of trainees graduating from the current BCT/AIT program with the attitudes of trainees graduating from the OSUT program. This report provides a summary of the OSUT surveys conducted at Fort Leonard Wood (MOS 12B), Fort Gordon (MOS 36C), Fort Knox (MOS 11D/E), Fort Sill (MOS 13B), and Fort Bliss (MOS 16P). For the purpose of analysis, each of 53 questionnaire items was classified into one of the following categories: background, training intensity, ancillary training, morale, reenlistment, and OSUT opinion. Two comparisons were of primary interest: BCT versus AIT and AIT versus OSUT. Items were analyzed individually. Chi-square tests were used to determine if differences in the pattern of responding between groups were statistically significant.
