Book excerpt: One of the major goals of advanced tokamak research is to develop plasma configurations with good confinement and improved stability at high [beta]. In DIII-D, various high performance configurations with H- and VH-mode edges have been produced. These include discharges with poloidal cross sections in the forms of dee and crecent shapes, single- and double-null divertors, and with various central magnetic shear profiles and current profile peakedness. All these discharges exhibit confinement in the outer plasma region which leads to a large edge pressure gradient and a large edge bootstrap current driven by this steep pressure gradient. These edge conditions often drive an instability near the edge region which can severely degrade the discharge performance. An understanding of this edge instability is essential to sustain an enhance discharge performance.

Book excerpt: Several regimes of improved confinement and stability have been obtained in recent experiments in the DIII-D tokamak by dynamically varying the toroidal current density profile to transiently produce a poloidal magnetic field profile with more favorable confinement and stability properties. A very peaked current density profile with high plasma internal inductance, l{sub i}, is produced either by a rapid change in the plasma poloidal cross section or by a rapid change in the total plasma current. Values of thermal energy confinement times nearly 1.8 times the JET/DIII-D ELM-free H-mode thermal confinement scaling are obtained. The confinement enhancement factor over the ITER89-P L-mode confinement scaling, H, is as high as 3. Normalized toroidal beta, [beta]{sub N}, greater than 6%-m-T/MA and values of the product [beta]{sub N}H greater than 15 have also been obtained. Both the confinement and the maximum achievable [beta] vary with l{sub i} and decrease as the current profile relaxes. For strongly shaped H-mode discharges, in addition to the current density profile peakedness, as measured by l{sub i} other current profile parameters, such as its distribution near the edge region, may also affect the confinement enhancement.

Book excerpt: Discharges exhibiting the highest plasma energy and fusion reactivity yet realized in the DIII-D tokamak have been produced by combining the benefits of a hollow or weakly sheared central current profile with a high confinement (H-mode) edge. In these discharges, low power neutral beam injection heats the electrons during the initial current ramp, and[open-quotes]freezes in[close-quotes] a hollow or flat central current profile. When the neutral beam power is increased, formation of a region of reduced transport and highly peaked profiles in the core often results. Shortly before these plasmas would otherwise disrupt, a transition is triggered from the low (L-mode) to high (H-mode) confinement regimes, thereby broadening the pressure profile and avoiding the disruption. These plasmas continue to evolve until the high performance phase is terminated nondisruptively at much higher[beta][sub T] (ratio of plasma pressure to toroidal magnetic field pressure) than would be attainable with peaked profiles and an L-mode edge. Transport analysis indicates that in this phase, the ion diffusivity is equivalent to that predicted by Chang-Hinton neoclassical theory over the entire plasma volume. This result is consistent with suppression of turbulence by locally enhanced E x B flow shear, and is supported by observations of reduced fluctuations in the plasma. Calculations of performance in these discharges extrapolated to a deuterium-tritium fuel mixture indicates that such plasmas could produce a DT fusion gain Q[sub DT]= 0.32.

Book excerpt: Plasma configurations with reversed magnetic shear have been proposed for steady-state tokamak operation since the plasma profiles can be made consistent with good confinement, high bootstrap current fraction, and stability at very high beta. The stability of reversed magnetic shear discharges with beta up to 11% has previously been demonstrated in DIII-D. Reversed magnetic shear (RMS) refers to a safety factor profile, q([rho]), which is a non-monotonic function of minor radius, [rho]. The magnetic shear S[equivalent-to] ([rho]/q) dq/d[rho] is negative within the plasma core and positive at the edge. When S

Book excerpt: Negative central magnetic shear (NCS) discharges with [Beta]{sub N} ≤ 4, H ≤ 3, and up to 80% of the current non-inductively driven are reproducibly produced in the DIII-D tokamak. Strong peaking of T{sub i}, plasma rotation, and in some cases n{sub e} are observed inside the NCS region. Transport analysis shows that the core ion thermal diffusivity is substantially reduced and near the neoclassical value after the formation of the internal transport barrier. The negative central shear is necessary but not sufficient for the formation of this transport barrier. The power required for the formation appears to increase with the toroidal magnetic field. The high performance phase of H-mode NCS discharges often ends with an ELM-like collapse initiated from the edge whereas the L-mode discharges which have a more peaked pressure profile tend to end with a more global n = 1 MHD event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application of Lower Hybrid (LH) Current Drive (CD) in the DIII-D tokamak has been studied at LLNL, off and on, for several years. The latest effort began in February 1992 in response to a letter from ASDEX indicating that the 2.45 GHz, 3 MW system there was available to be used on another device. An initial assessment of the possible uses for such a system on DIII-D was made and documented in September 1992. Multiple meetings with GA personnel and members of the LH community nationwide have occurred since that time. The work continued through the submission of the 1995 Field Work Proposals in March 1993 and was then put on hold due to budget limitations. The purpose of this document is to record the status of the work in such a way that it could fairly easily be restarted at a future date. This document will take the form of a collection of Appendices giving both background and the latest results from the FY 1993 work, connected by brief descriptive text. Section 2 will describe the final workshop on LHCD in DIII-D held at GA in February 1993. This was an open meeting with attendees from GA, LLNL, MIT and PPPL. Summary documents from the meeting and subsequent papers describing the results will be included in Appendices. Section 3 will describe the status of work on the use of low frequency (2.45 GHZ) LH power and Parametric Decay Instabilities (PDI) for the special case of high dielectric in the edge regions of the DIII-D plasma. This was one of the critical issues identified at the workshop. Other potential issues for LHCD in the DIII-D scenarios are: (1) damping of the waves on fast ions from neutral beam injection, (2) runaway electrons in the low density edge plasma, (3) the validity of the WKB approximation used in the ray-tracing models in the steep edge density gradients.

Book excerpt: In DIII-D plasmas with L-mode edge and negative central shear (q{sub axis}-q{sub min} (almost equal to)0.3 to 0.5), an interchange-like instability has been observed [1]. The instability and a subsequent tearing mode cause reduction of the core electron temperature and plasma rotation, and therefore the instability affects discharge evolution and the desired high performance is not achieved. Stability analyses indicate robust ideal stability, while the Resistive Interchange Mode criterion is marginal and the instability appears to be localized initially. Based on this, we believe that the mode is, most likely, a Resistive Interchange Mode. The amplitude of the instability is correlated with the location of the q{sub min} surface and inversely with the fast-ion pressure. There is indication that the interchange-like instability may be ''seeding'' the tearing mode that sometimes follows the interchange-like instability.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have made two significant discoveries in our recent studies of quiescent H-mode (QH-mode) plasmas in DIII-D. First, we have found that we can control the edge pedestal density and pressure by altering the edge particle transport through changes in the edge toroidal rotation. This allows us to adjust the edge operating point to be close to, but below the ELM stability boundary, maintaining the ELM-free state while allowing up to a factor of two increase in edge pressure. The ELM boundary is significantly higher in more strongly shaped plasmas, which broadens the operating space available for QH-mode and leads to improved core performance. Second, for the first time on any tokamak, we have created QH-mode plasmas with strong edge co-rotation; previous QH-modes in all tokamaks had edge counter rotation. This result demonstrates that counter NBI and edge counter rotation are not essential conditions for QH-mode. Both these investigations benefited from the edge stability predictions based on peeling-ballooning mode theory. The broadening of the ELM-stable region with plasma shaping is predicted by that theory. The theory has also been extended to provide a model for the edge harmonic oscillation (EHO) that regulates edge transport in the QH-mode. Many of the features of that theory agree with the experimental results reported either previously or in the present paper. One notable example is the prediction that co-rotating QH-mode is possible provided sufficient shear in the edge rotation can be created.

Book excerpt: The High performance H-mode regime on DIII-D has been extended to both low q and high q (high [Beta]p) and low q operation. In high current operation, VH-mode discharges were obtained for the first time with I{sub P}(MA)/B{sub T} (T)> 1. These discharges had q95= 3.4, H = 2.9, [Beta]{sub N}= 3, and [Beta]{sub T}[Tau]{sub E}=3%-sec. [Beta]{sub T}[Tau]{sub E} was improved by approximately 50% over previous results. These discharges were obtained with neutral beam injection during the plasma current ramp up which maintained the axial q above 1. In low current operation, neutral beam heated discharges with 100% of the plasma current from non-inductive sources were obtained at high q, q95=15, with [Beta]{sub N}=3.9, H=3.1, and [Beta]{sub p}=4.9. These discharges represent an extension of the high performance regime to q95> 7.2, which was made possible by reduction in the locked mode low density limit, as the result of improvements in the magnetic field error correcting coils. These low current discharges do not exhibit some of the standard signatures of VH-mode, but appear to represent a new regime of improved H-mode confinement. Similar, non-VH-mode, high energy confinement discharges were obtained at low density and moderate q.
