Book excerpt: The viability pf carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates for the strengheing of corrision damged and reinforced bridge girders is addressed in this paper. Ten reinforced concrete beams (100 x 150 x 1200mm) with variable chloride levels (0-3%) were constructed. Six beams were strengthened by externally epoxy bonding CFRP laminates to the concrete surface. The tensil reinforcement of three unstrenghtened and four stengthened specimen were subjected to accelerated corrosion by means of impressed current to 5, 10, and 15% mass loss. Strain gauges were placed on the CFRP laminates to monitor and quantify tensile strains induced by the corrosion process. Following corrosion the specimens were tested in fixture in a four-point bending regime. Test results revealed that CFRP laminates successfully confined the corrosion cracking, and the total expansion of the laminate exhibited an exponential increase throughout the corrosion process. All the strengthed beams exhibited increased stiffness over the unstrengthened specimens and marked increases in the yeild and ultimate strength. The CFRP strengthening scheme was able to restore the capacity of corrosion damaged concrete beams up to 15% mass loss.

Book excerpt: The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings. The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles. In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers: * An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design * The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars * Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members * The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process

Book excerpt: The in situ rehabilitation or upgrading of reinforced concrete members using bonded steel plates is an effective, convenient and economic method of improving structural performance. However, disadvantages inherent in the use of steel have stimulated research into the possibility of using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in its place, providing a non-corrosive, more versatile strengthening system. This book presents a detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforces polymer composite plates. It is based to a large extent on material developed or provided by the consortium which studied the technology of plate bonding to upgrade structural units using carbon fibre / polymer composite materials. The research and trial tests were undertaken as part of the ROBUST project, one of several ventures in the UK Government's DTI-LINK Structural Composites Programme. The book has been designed for practising structural and civil engineers seeking to understand the principles and design technology of plate bonding, and for final year undergraduate and postgraduate engineers studying the principles of highway and bridge engineering and structural engineering. - Detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforced polymer composites - Contains in-depth case histories

Book excerpt: In December 1996, the then CEB established a Task Group with the main objective to elaborate design guidelines for the use of FRP reinforcement in accordance with the design format of the CEB-FIP Model Code and Eurocode2. With the merger of CEB and FIP into fib in 1998, this Task Group became fib TG 9.3 FRP Reinforcement for concrete structures in Commission 9 Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials and Systems. The Task Group consists of about 60 members, representing most European universities, research institutes and industrial companies working in the field of advanced composite reinforcement for concrete structures, as well as corresponding members from Canada, Japan and USA. Meetings are held twice a year and on the research level its work is supported by the EU TMR (European Union Training and Mobility of Researchers) Network "ConFibreCrete”. The work of fib TG 9.3 is performed by five working parties (WP): Material Testing and Characterization (MT&C) Reinforced Concrete (RC) Prestressed Concrete (PC) Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) Marketing and Applications (M&A) This technical report constitutes the work conducted as of to date by the EBR party. This bulletin gives detailed design guidelines on the use of FRP EBR, the practical execution and the quality control, based on the current expertise and state-of-the-art knowledge of the task group members. It is regarded as a progress report since it is not the aim of this report to cover all aspects of RC strengthening with composites. Instead, it focuses on those aspects that form the majority of the design problems. several of the topics presented are subject of ongoing research and development, and the details of some modelling approaches may be subject to future revisions. as knowledge in this field is advancing rapidly, the work of the EBR WP will continue. Inspite of this limit in scope, considerable effort has been made to present a bulletin that is today’s state-of-art in the area of strengthening of concrete structures by means of externally bonded FRP reinforcement.

The encyclopedia comprises approximately 300 contributions. Since earthquake engineering deals with the interaction between earthquake disturbances and the built infrastructure, the emphasis is on basic design processes important to both non-specialists and engineers so that readers become suitably well informed without needing to deal with the details of specialist understanding. The encyclopedia’s content provides technically-inclined and informed readers about the ways in which earthquakes can affect our infrastructure and how engineers would go about designing against, mitigating and remediating these effects. The coverage ranges from buildings, foundations, underground construction, lifelines and bridges, roads, embankments and slopes. The encyclopedia also aims to provide cross-disciplinary and cross-domain information to domain-experts. This is the first single reference encyclopedia of this breadth and scope that brings together the science, engineering and technological aspects of earthquakes and structures.

Book excerpt: Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) have been widely used as externally epoxy-bonded reinforcement for repair and retrofit of existing concrete structures. As the use of CFRP in construction increases, it is essential to consider the long term behavior. In this study, concrete specimens with externally bonded CFRP composite systems were exposed to various accelerated ageing environments: different elevated temperature water immersion, varying relative humidity exposure, real-time solar exposure, pressurized hygrothermal exposure, and fatigue loading. Three-point loading test and direct tension test were used to evaluate the flexural and tensile strength of CFRP specimens. This research recommends that the durability strength reduction factor be defined as the ratio of the flexural strength of a test specimen after exposure for 60 days at 60C to the strength of a control specimen at the initiation of exposure. Test specimens, exposure environments, testing procedures, and field application environments are selected to assure uniform reporting, testing and application of durability strength reduction factors. Two exposure environments are recommended for design, wet and air. Water can diffuse through concrete and accumulate on the epoxy/concrete interface in a wet environment and is the default condition for design. An air environment precludes water accumulation but requires engineering design and validation to guarantee compliance. The resulting durability strength reduction factor may be used to (a) calculate the reduced strength for environmental exposure, (b) qualify a specific CFRP system, (c) compare durability reduction factors to those provided by system suppliers, and (d) confirm compliance with project specifications.

Book excerpt: Improvement in the short-term behavior of deficient reinforced concrete (RC) beams is very well known through extensive testing of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips. However, long-term performance of such beams needs to be assessed before the method can gain full acceptance. Modeling of the overall system of CFRP strengthened RC beams requires modeling of the individual components that ultimately leads to failure i.e., concrete, CFRP and concrete-CFRP interface. Component elasto-damage constitutive models are developed for concrete crushing, CFRP plate rupture and concrete-CFRP interface failure, calibrated by data from both suitably designed experiments and from experiments reported in literature, and are utilized to investigate the low cycle fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by CFRP strips. The predictive ability of the models is tested by comparison to data from two different beam strengthening schemes i.e., with end anchorage and without end anchorage.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research aimed to investigate the effect of utilizing "Fiber Reinforced Polymer" (FRP) on the light weight concrete beams. The main hypothesis is that such utilization of the FRP will lead to strengthened lightweight beams. The research that has been done on this relationship is somewhat broad in the scope and have mostly focused on the normal-weight concrete. However, only few studies that have considered the light weight concrete. Eight Beams were tested in this research under four point bending test. Two beams were taken as a control beams without any external bonding of Carbon Fiber Reinforced polymer. Another two beams strengthened with external CFRP sheet bonded with epoxy only. Next two beams strengthened same as the previous two but anchored to the concrete by Mechanical Fixation which is anchor bolt. Two of the beams strengthened with CFRP sheet at tension face on the bottom and CFRP sheet as U-wrap at the ends to increase the anchorage to the concrete. The theoretical value for the strengthened beam was calculated according to ACI 440 and compared to the experimental value from the test. Four point flexural load test was considered in this research. Test result showed an increase in the strength of the strengthened beam compared to the control beam, while the deflections for strengthened beams were decreased. Strengthened with CFRP sheet using u-wrap anchor was the most effective system for strength enhancement which was 12% with respect to control beam. However the ductility of the beam was reduced significantly.
