Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life, Death and Immortality: With Kindred Essays When it was suggested a number of years ago in one of the leading scientific assemblies of the world that the origin of life on the earth may have been due to the chance transmission through space of a pri mordial germ wrapped up in a meteorite, a discovery of real significance appeared to have been made. All the world was duly notified. And apparently all the world was expected to be duly content thereafter, as if nothing further was to be said concerning the pre viously much vexed question of the Beginnings of Life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Faith and Immortality The following essays of Father George Tyrrell are drawn, for the most part, from notebooks and unpublished material. It was his habit, as has been mentioned elsewhere, to keep what he called a "journal" of spiritual and philosophical jottings - day by day he thus noted down any thoughts that occurred to him; and the result was, sometimes a series of detached reflections, such as we find in Nova et Vetera, or Oil and Wine, sometimes a consecutive work, such as Lex Credendi, which was, to a great extent, drawn from such jottings. The "Journal," of which a large portion is first published in these pages, was written during the course of the year 1904, while its author was yet a member of the Society of Jesus, but the collection contains also a good deal of matter drawn from a later, and less elaborated notebook, written during the year 1906, in the months succeeding his rupture with the Society, and particularly during the period of his wanderings in France. The "Journal" of 1904 is undoubtedly the incomplete scheme of a definite work; perhaps one of the most important works that its author ever planned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconciliation of Religion and Science: Being Essays on Immortality Eeing that more than half the differences of opinion in philosophy and theology are due to the use of words in different senses, it may be well to define in what sense the words religion and science are used in this volume. It is, I may say, the popular, ordinary, and quite intelligible sense which they commonly bear - indeed, in my opinion, the general public has often a better reason for, and more method in, its use of language than the wise men who are for ever setting it to rights. Science is simply the process by which mankind derives knowledge from reason ing about facts. (occasionally I may have used the word in its more restricted sense of natural science - 21a, that department of knowledge which deals with physical facts.) Religion is the word that describes the relations of man with the power or being whom we call God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidence of Immortality This essay is an examination from a scientific view point into the probability of the continued existence of' human life after the death of the body. Of course, by scientific is meant the light Of reason applied to the phe nomena of life - not a demonstration by means Of the microscope or balances. Perhaps philosophical would be a better word to use in describing its method, but as all true science is philosophical, and all true philosophy scientific, the writer is not disposed to insist too strongly upon the term used. It is believed that a careful analysis of undisputed phenomena of existence, which have been perhaps overlooked, or which have not been assigned their ptoper importance, will establish the truth of the persist ence of life beyond the grave as certainly as any other fact of existence. It will assuredly place it upon a much firmer basis than that enjoyed by many Of the accepted scientific hypotheses, such as those which attempt to prove the existence and functions of the ether, atoms, matter itself, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William James and Other Essays on the Philosophy of Life Since each of these papers is intended to be comprehensible by itself, I am obliged, in each, to state, more or less dogmatically, opin ions which I have discussed and attempted to justify in former writings. Dogma, as such, has no place in philosophy. But the present book is no systematic treatise; and is to be judged, I hope, in the light of its own decidedly practical purpose, and of its accompanying limitations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How We Remember Our Past Lives: And Other Essays on Reincarnation A new school of thought is ar1s1ng to challenge long accepted views of life. Its keynote may be said to b evolutionary creation. It is an exposition of th phenomena that surrounds us in terms that are bot scientific and idealistic. It offers an explanation c life, of the or1g1n of our fragment of the universe, c hidden and mysterious natural laws, of the nature an destiny of man, that appeals with moving force to th logical mind. Thls school of thought is at the sam time both iconoclastic and constructive, for it is sweep ing away' old dogmas that are no longer tenable 1 the light of rapidly developing modern science, Whi it is building a substantial structure of facts beneat the age-long dream of immortality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Original Essay on the Immateriality Immortality of the Human Soul, Founded Solely on Physical and Rational Principles When, without patron or friend, I abandoned my first publication to its fate, you saw it floating on the stream of time toward the caves of oblivion, and, kindly extending the hand of unsolicited friendship, you rescued it from the shade. Under the forms of common civility, you have treated me with a degree of politeness to which my deserts can bear no proportion; while the condescension of your manners, has taught me to surmount that distance, which station and circumstance had made between us. Superior to those local prejudices which might have influenced a mind devoid of magnanimity, you have more than called yourself my friend; while, stimulated by your encouragement, I have prosecuted with vigour the present work, which, abstracted from this circumstance, would, in all probability, never have seen completion.
