In the general part, the most important basics of modern imaging methods are discussed, but with less emphasis on the physical background than in purely neuro-/radiological textbooks. Chapters are devoted to the meticulous presentation of imaging anatomy of the orbit and intracranial visual pathway. The latest knowledge on the indication, technique, and results of functional MR imaging is presented. Visual system impairment in the pediatric age group is also discussed. The special part of the book provides detailed descriptions of the symptoms and clinical and imaging findings in individual patients with orbital and intracranial pathologies. This book is specifically designed to be of value not only to neuroradiologists but also to ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons, oto-/rhino-laryngologists, and neurologists who require more detailed information on these special diseases.

This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of OCT and Imaging in Central Nervous System Diseases offers updated state-of-the-art advances using optical coherence tomography (OCT) regrading neuronal loss within the retina. Detailed information on the OCT imaging and interpretation is provided for the evaluation of disease progression in numerous neurodegenerative disorders and as a biological marker of neuroaxonal injury. Covering disorders like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, intracranial hypertension, Friedreich’s ataxia, schizophrenia, hereditary optic neuropathies, glaucoma, and amblyopia, readers will given insights into effects on the retina and the and optic nerve. Individual chapters are also devoted to OCT technique, new OCT technology in neuro-ophthalmology, OCT and pharmacological treatment, and the use of OCT in animal models. Similar to the first edition, this book is an excellent and richly illustrated reference for diagnosis of many retinal diseases and monitoring of surgical and medical treatment. OCT allows to study vision from of the retina to the optic tracts. Retinal axons in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) are non-myelinated until they penetrate the lamina cribrosa. Hence, the RNFL is an ideal structure for visualization of any process of neurodegeneration, neuroprotection, or regeneration. By documenting the ability of OCT to provide key information on CNS diseases, this book illustrates convincingly that the eye is indeed the “window to the brain”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neurology of Vision sets out the principles and information needed to understand and manage disorders of the visual pathways in the brain. The author divides vision into three components. The optical component addresses the eye's ability to properly focus light on the retina. The retinocortical component converts light into neural signals in the retina, transmitting them to the primary visual cortex. Finally, the integrative component converts this simple visual information into more complicated forms. The symptoms and signs, testing methods, and diseases of each part of the visual system are presented using this unique, structural component approach. A final chapter discusses the visual manifestations of psychiatric disturbances. The book is heavily illustrated with over 150 beautifully rendered line illustrations, 50 radiographic brain images, and 60 retinal photographs. Case studies with teaching questions are also included, to further the reader's knowledge and test understanding.

Book excerpt: This book discusses more than one hundred patients in which visual pathway is involved, and focuses on the role of visual field examination in the diagnosis of these diseases. It also highlights the application of concepts from the new interdiscipline, integration medicine as well as molecular biology and genetics in the analysis of the diseases. In this book, the commonly (typically) noticed changes in the visual field of patients with visual pathway disorders are mainly described in the chapter one titled as “Visual Field-related Anatomy of Visual Pathway” and chapter two titled as “Interpretation of Visual Field Test”, while the majority of the cases presented with "atypical" changes in visual field. At this point, the changes in the visual field could function as either a key to understand the disease, or a question mark which confuses the diagnosis. However, the process of pushing aside a fog around the diagnosis step by step helps the readers to gradually disclose the essence of the disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring brain function with light in vivo has become a reality. The technology 33 of detecting and interpreting patterns of reflected light has reached a degree of 34 maturity that now permits high spatial and temporal resolution visualization at both 35 the systems and cellular levels. There now exist several optical imaging methodolo- 36 gies, based on either hemodynamic changes in nervous tissue or neurally induced 37 light scattering changes, that can be used to measure ongoing activity in the brain. 38 These include the techniques of intrinsic signal optical imaging, near-infrared optical 39 imaging, fast optical imaging based on scattered light, optical imaging with voltage 40 sensitive dyes, and two-photon imaging of hemodynamic signals. The purpose of 41 this volume is to capture some of the latest applications of these methodologies to 42 the study of cerebral cortical function. 43 This volume begins with an overview and history of optical imaging and its use 44 in the study of brain function. Several chapters are devoted to the method of intrin- 45 sic signal optical imaging, a method used to record the minute changes in optical 46 absorption due to hemodynamic changes that accompanies cortical activity. Since the 47 detected hemodynamic changes are highly localized, this method has excellent 48 spatial resolution (50–100 μm ), a resolution sufficient for visualization of fundamen- 49 tal modules of cerebral cortical function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neuropsychology of Vision describes a range of new approaches to neuropsychological investigation and provides a broad overview of visual neuropsychology. The book starts by presenting the results from new research employing single-unit recordings, on the neuronal basis of perception demonstrating that the visual system relies strongly on feedback from higher to lower levels of information processing, and that neuronal plasticity exists in the primary sensory cortices of adults, areas previously considered to be hard-wired. The book also describes other new and adapted techniques to measure brain activity, including multi-unit sum potential recording, functional magnetic resonance imaging and employing transcranial magnetic stimulation to induce temporary, circumscribed functional lesions in the cortices of normal subjects to mimic disorders. The coverage then moves on to review the experience of patients suffering from disturbances of visual perception. The disorders covered include agnosia, neglect, blindsight and achromatopsia. The final chapter is devoted to recovery and rehabilitation from cerebral visual disorder. Professors Fahle and Greenlee have brought together some of the leading international specialists in the field to provide this comprehensive and up-to-date review.

Book excerpt: Great effort has been expended mapping the relationship between visual experience, visual system architecture, and function -- particularly in abnormally sighted populations such as those with amblyopia. In addition to its relatively common occurrence, amblyopia is particularly well suited for the study of normal visual development since it is characterized by reduced vision in one eye due to chronically non-fusible retinal images, not due to disease or damage of the eye or optic nerves. Thus, amblyopia provides a unique case study of how abnormal vision affects the development of the visual system without the comorbid effects of neurodegeneration, disease, or damage. This dissertation summarizes and reviews the findings of two of my recent diffusion-MRI (dMRI) based investigations of amblyopic populations, which demonstrate microstructural abnormalities of the optic nerve and tracts in participants with anisometropic amblyopia, in addition to abnormalities in thalamo-cortical pathways. We subsequently review the current amblyopia and developmental plasticity literature and relate our new findings to our current understanding of how congenital visual disorders affect visual system architecture more generally. In sum, this dissertation demonstrates a model for using recent advances in dMRI to investigate white matter plasticity in humans in vivo and provides support for recently developed models of visual development in abnormally sighted populations.
