Book excerpt: Revolutionary changes in medical imaging have enormously improved the ability to detect structural and functional organ alterations early. Imaging is becoming an essential tool - in association with hormonal assays - for the diagnosis and management of endocrine disorders. New contrast media and their application to ultrasounds, as well as the opportunity to merge images acquired by functional/metabolic and traditional techniques, allow characterization of key features of identified lesions. Some radiological techniques such as ultrasonography, CT, and MRI are now available in operating rooms, thus supporting a diagnostic and therapeutic approach to endocrine diseases. In this new book, distinguished experts have contributed concise and well-illustrated chapters to describe pathognomonic features of several benign and malignant diseases affecting endocrine glands. They review the main advantages and disadvantages of each diagnostic technique along with indications for selecting a method. As a special feature, online videos of dynamic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are available. Imaging in Endocrine Disorders is a must read and valuable reference for all professionals dealing with endocrine disorders, including internists and general practitioners who must manage the essential diagnostic workup.

Book excerpt: A multitude of new developments, not only in the rapidly advancing field of molecular genetics and steroid metabolism but in all traditional areas of pediatric endocrinology, have influenced the diagnostic approach in children and adolescents with endocrine disorders, thus warranting this 4th, revised and extended edition of 'Diagnostics of Endocrine Function in Children and Adolescents'. Several chapters have been revised completely and all have been thoroughly updated. In addition, new chapters dealing with the muscle-bone unit and bone metabolism have also been incorporated. The original format of the chapters, which are a combination of in-depth discussion of the diagnostic process, practical conclusions and expert advice based on extensive experience, was maintained. Easy-to-use tables and figures allow for quick reference. Flowcharts of possible diagnostic pathways lead to the most frequent diagnoses. Presenting a broad range of diagnostic approaches, test procedures, and normative data required for establishing diagnoses for a broad spectrum of endocrine disorders, this book is an indispensable reference tool not only for endocrinologists and pediatricians but also for professionals in other specialties seeking evidence-based, rapid diagnostic solutions as the basis of advice and therapy for their patients.

The 2nd, revised edition of Practical Algorithms in Pediatric Endocrinology deals with practical issues of child growth, puberty, diseases of the endocrine glands, sexual differentiation, as well as aberrations of water, electrolyte, mineral and carbohydrate metabolism. Fifty clinical issues are covered by an algorithmic approach, breaking down long lists and tables of differential diagnosis into smaller, more manageable ones. Common clinical symptoms, signs and laboratory abnormalities are classified as they present themselves at the patient's bedside. This book is aimed at general practitioners and pediatricians, in particular those who are not exposed to pediatric endocrine problems on a daily basis, and at trainees in endocrinology and pediatric endocrinology as they acquire familiarity with clinical problem solving to make rational choices when facing clinical dilemmas.

Book excerpt: Endocrine conditions requiring surgical intervention in the pediatric age group are uncommon. When diagnosed, they are the source of great in terest and, often, considerable debate. This is understandable, since few centers and even fewer individual surgeons can draw on vast experience of this subject. The great divergence of opinion regarding management is also understandable in that pediatric endocrine lesions often differ considerably from their adult counterparts in histology, natural history and response to treatment. Pediatric endocrine lesions are also, as a rule, less frequently malignant. In addition to the great strides made in surgical and anesthetic technique and operative monitoring, progress in four areas has substantially advanced the management of endocrine dis orders in the pediatric age group in the last decade: imaging, pathology, pharmacology and genetics. The new imaging tools, ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, have added great diagnostic possibilities. More recent developments, such as radio nuclide imaging for the adrenal gland and the possibility of using tagged antibodies, promise to expand our imaging horizons even further. In the field of pathology, the develop ment of immunocytochemical markers (e. g. , monoclonal antibodies), the refinement in special stains and the continuous perfection of fine needle aspiration biopsies offer great new diagnostic as well as research capabil ities. Newer pharmacological agents, such as the alpha and beta blockers, the calcium channel blockers and thyroxine analogs, add a whole new level of safety to the management of the potentially lethal pheochromocytoma.

This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive guide for selective venous sampling procedures and the role of interventional radiologists in the care and treatment of patients with endocrine disorders. Disorders of the endocrine system involve an imbalance in the natural homeostasis of the hormones produced by the glands in the body. There are a variety of endocrine conditions that are characterized by either hormonal hyposecretion or hypersecretion. Percutaneous selective venous sampling is the gold standard diagnostic tool for the medical and surgical management of patients with a variety of such disorders. Selective venous sampling is a minimally invasive interventional procedure that interventional radiologists perform to localize sites of abnormal hormone secretion. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are the most used diagnostic imaging modalities in patients with the suspected endocrine disorder; however, their specificity is not optimal, and identifying a culprit gland is difficult based on imaging findings alone. Therefore, the ultimate decision for management depends on the outcome of selective venous sampling. As these various venous samplings are increasingly performed worldwide, the collaboration between interventional radiology, endocrinology, surgical endocrinology, surgical oncology, neurosurgery, and gynecology teams is essential. With limited literature on the topic, this volume fills the gap with in-depth coverage of selective venous sampling alongside the pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical diagnosis, as well as medical, surgical, and interventional management of endocrine disorders. The book is divided into five parts: Clinical, Laboratory, and Radiological Diagnosis of Endocrine Disorders; Selective Venous Sampling in Interventional Radiology; Medical Treatment of Endocrine Disorders; Surgical Treatment of Endocrine Disorders; Interventional Treatment of Endocrine Disorders. Throughout these parts, endocrine disorders that require venous sampling are covered in depth: primary aldosteronism, primary hyperparathyroidism, Cushing’s disease, hormone-secreting pancreatic adenomas, and androgen-secreting ovarian tumors. There is additionally an emerging role for interventional management in thyroid gland disorders, which is covered here. This is an ideal guide for interventional radiologists caring for patients with endocrine disorders, as well as endocrinologists, endocrine surgeons, surgical oncologists, otolaryngologists, neurosurgeons, gynecologists, and nephrologists.
