Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imagination in Dreams and Their Study Two essays - one of them published in the Contemporary Review, the other in the New Review - are the foundation of this little book. Those papers were favoured with a good deal of attention; which I take as additional evidence, in a small way, that though most of us make it a point of enlightenment to speak slightingly of dreams the contempt we ask credit for is rarely sincere. We really know better than to speak slightingly of dreams; unless, indeed, we have no experience of them or have never dreamt anything but incoherent and inconsequential nonsense. In this volume the original matter reappears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Imagination and Its Place in Education by : Edwin Asbury Kirkpatrick
Download or read book Imagination and Its Place in Education written by Edwin Asbury Kirkpatrick and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Science embodies universal truths. Literature expresses truth as seen or exemplified by individuals. Neither literature nor the science of psychology alone can adequately deal with the subject of imagination. Psychology seeks to present what is true of all minds, but in no type of mental activity is there greater individuality than in the exercise of the imagination. Tests given students and their reports of introspective studies show that the same laws govern all minds. No topic reveals to students more clearly their mental processes and at the same time shows them that other persons arrive at the same results by different routes. This little book will introduce many to a study of the facts in the realm of imagination as exemplified in their own minds and in the minds of others, especially children, and as revealed in play, science, art, and literature."--Preface.

First published in 1935, this study looks at the development of imagination in children. Which uses a method in which observation of the free behaviour of children plays the principal role, but in which experimental technique is represented by a somewhat rigorous control of conditions, by a discreet use of question and answer, and by an emphasis on the necessity for accurate and full report, while psychoanalysis, at the same time, contributes a depth of insight, a realization of the importance of affective factors, and an alertness for the significance of detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the habit of taking drugs make authors write better, or worse, or differently? Does it alter the quality of their consciousness, shape their imagery, influence their technique? For the Romantic writers of the nineteenth century, many of whom experimented with opium and some of whom were addicted to it, this was an important question, but it has never been fully answered. In this study Alethea Hayter examines the work of five writers - Crabbe, Coleridge, De Quincey, Wilkie Collins and Francis Thompson - who were opium addicts for many years, and of several other writers - notably Keats, Edgar Allan Poe and Baudelaire, but also Walter Scott, Dickens, Mrs Browning, James Thomson and others - who are known to have taken opium at times. The work of these writers is discussed in the context of nineteenth-century opinion about the uses and dangers of opium, and of Romantic ideas on the creative imagination, on dreams and hypnagogic visions, and on imagery, so that the idiosyncrasies of opium-influenced writing can be isolated from their general literary background. The examination reveals a strange and miserable region of the mind in which some of the greatest poetic imaginations of the nineteenth century were imprisoned.
