Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As darkness falls on the fairgrounds, the animals venture out of the woods for one magical, memorable night! An exhilarating wordless picture book. Far from the city, but not quite the countryside, lies a fairground. When night comes and the fair is empty, something unexpected happens. Wild animals emerge from the forest, a brave raccoon pulls a lever, and the roller coasters and rides explode back into bright, neon life. It’s time for the woodland creatures to head to the fair! In a gorgeous wordless picture book, author Gideon Sterer and illustrator Mariachiara Di Giorgio offer an exuberant take on what animals are up to when humans are asleep. Suffused with color and light, the panel illustrations celebrate the inherent humor and joy in deer flying by on chair-swings, a bear winning a stuffed bear, three weasels carrying a soft pretzel, and a badger driving a bumper car. With thrills both spectacular and subtle, Midnight Fair will have readers punching their tickets again and again to revel in this fantastic nocturnal world.

Book excerpt: Spokane's history begins with the arrival of explorer David Thompson, who established the trading post Spokane House in 1810. From that period forward, the area teemed with Euro-American settlers who often mingled with the Native American population. Spokan Falls, officially incorporated in 1881, and by 1891 known simply as Spokane, became ground zero for the extractive industries of mining and logging and later a vast hub for the railroads. These factors led to the greatest boom in the city's history between the years 1900 and 1915. Spokane's growth came on the heels of an increase in the built environment that included the creation of parks, subdivisions, an expanded downtown business district, and an almost feverish movement to create some of Washington's most beautifully designed bridges. Because of this, Spokane has often been referred to as the "City of Bridges."

Book excerpt: This 92-page Black & White 11 x 8.5 landscape format soft cover book contains over 125 images almost exclusively from the Great Northern Spokane Division. The line from Troy, Montanato Spokane [Hillyard] generally comprised the Spokane Division, but for years was included in the Kalispell Division. The line alongthe rimrocks above Riverside State Park west of Fort Wrightbounced in and out of the Spokane and Cascade Divisions. The transformation of the railway landscape around Spokanebegan in March 1970,with the Burlington Northern merger, nextwas the introduction of Amtrak in May 1971and perhaps the most significant change in the early 1970s was the demolition of the Great Northern and Union Pacific stations in downtown Spokaneto make way for the boondoggle called Expo74. Included in the book are photographs from 1971/72 Latah Creek Bridge connection to the former GN mainline near Lyons. The final blow to the Great Northern mainline happened in April 1984 when the segment from Dean to Newport through Scotia Canyon was abandoned, severing forever Jim Hill's transcontinental line completed in 1893.I was on hand and photographed the very last revenue trains on both the Riverside State Park and Scotia Canyon lines. I digitized my entire collection of black & white negatives as the foundation for this book. This book is printed in black and white as a bittersweet testament to The Great Northern Railway - Spokane Division.

This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1891 and 1915, pen-and-ink artist Merritt Dana Houghton made over 200 bird’s-eye sketches of towns, ranches, mines, businesses, historic sites, and animals in Wyoming, northern Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Washington state. Historian Michael A. Amundson brings these many views together for the first time in these pages. This lavishly illustrated biography details Houghton’s life and work from his birth in Michigan in 1846 to his death in 1919 in Spokane through extensive genealogical records, newspaper accounts, and his illustrations—including historic ranches and bird’s-eye views of Fort Collins, Colorado; Dillon, Montana; and Spokane, Washington and the only known illustrations of long-lost places like Pearl, Colorado, and Rambler, Wyoming. Also included is reproduction of a four-foot-by-eight-foot view of Sheridan, Wyoming and a sixty-image sample portfolio of his best-preserved illustrations organized by type. Houghton’s work depicts the infrastructure of the new settler society that was remaking the West in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, and Amundson demonstrates how Houghton’s vision of the American West remains active today.
