Book excerpt: In 1978, seven-year-old George Molho was kidnapped by his own father. For a year, he survived mental and physical abuse to the point of torture. He found it easier to get used to hell than to hope that heaven was around the corner. George eventually escaped, but surviving the aftermath proved to be much more difficult. This memoir weaves past and present together to connect the pieces of Molhos childhood and adult life that shaped the man he would become. It explores the adage, love conquers all, revealing the inner workings that we all seek to understand. George was lucky to learn how to love from his family before his abduction, before his fathers cruel version of love was inflicted upon his young body and psyche. Later in life, love compels him to divulge all that happened on the mountainside where he left his innocence as a boy. Its not about how hard we get hit; its about how much we can take and keep moving forward. Scarred is a memoir written by a survivor, intended to empower and embolden all who have suffered, have survived, and are ready to be set free. This will be known as the book that set the literary genre of memoir free. Scarred reads like fiction while shattering the facade of make believe Molho becomes the victor of his past and his triumph is contagious. Andrea Afra, Free Press Houston

Book excerpt: When Daniel and Luke Mancuso lost their beloved mother Teresa to domestic violence, the Greek grandmother next door stepped in and started looking after them, passing home-cooked meals over the fence. This simple act of kindness helped Daniel and Luke navigate the fog of grief that followed, and captured the hearts of Australia when they started to share the meals and their special relationship with 'Yiayia' on social media. Now we can all enjoy Yiayia's home cooking, with this collection of traditional recipes from her kitchen and those of yiayias all around Australia. Yiayia's food is pure comfort: pastries such as spanakopita and tiropita; warming soups made with chickpeas, lentils and beans; hearty pasta and rice dishes such as moussaka and yemista; the unmistakable flavours of barbecued lamb and keftedes; and delicious desserts such as baklava and custard-filled galaktoboureko. This is a book about the power of food to bring people together. It's about love forged in tragedy, the importance of connection and how simple gestures, such as giving someone a home-cooked meal, can transform lives and restore hope. This is a specially formatted fixed-layout ebook that retains the look and feel of the print book.

Book excerpt: One of my favorite comic strips is Bill Wattersons Calvin and Hobbes. Its based on the adventures and misadventures of six-year old Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes. However, in Calvins mind Hobbes is the real deal, and the interactions between the two of them reflect that of a young boy and his living, breathing tiger friend. Calvins imagination is the stimulus of one of the most beloved, humorous and heart-warming comic strips of all time. Calvin is the antithesis of what is going on in the world today. Creativity and imagination seem to have taken a leave of absence recently. Movies and television shows are constantly being remade. New magazines look a lot like those already found on the newsstands. Television commercials are, for the most part sorely lacking in appeal. Radio commercials? Even worse: Same old song, same old story, same old same old. One of the things I love most about my grandson Krischan is his imagination Ive seen him invent an entire game using only a couple of sticks, a handful of rocks and an ant bed. Ive stood by his side as he saw and battled imaginary creatures so passionately I could have sworn I saw them too. Ive heard him create words for things that make so much more sense to me than the actual word he should be using. The boy has such a vivid imagination I make sure to pay close attention so I dont miss out on what he does or says next. He is, in a word Calvin. Coincidentally my nickname for him since the day he was born is Tiger. I have very single book chronicling the exploits of Calvin and Hobbes. Ive been saving them for Krischan so one day he can appreciate the magic Bill Watterson has created. I cant think of anyone better to pass the books along to, and hope Krischan will be eager to tear into them once he learns how to read. After he reads this book first, of course.

When singer Cara is invited to a big, fat Greek wedding in Corfu, she sees it as a mixed blessing: some time to heal on the beautiful Greek island with her aunt will be a tonic, but it’s going to stir up memories – of before Seb ghosted her and disappeared off the face of the earth. Akis Diakos, brother of the groom, should be looking forward to planning the bachelor party, but burdened by the weight of family expectation, his mind is elsewhere: he has a decision to make – one that could, apparently, ruin his little brother’s life forever. When Cara learns that her aunt Margot brought her here under false pretences, she’s faced with a dilemma. She’s not sung in public since that fateful day at Eurovision when her life fell apart, and she’s not planning to now. But with Akis’s encouragement, it’s time for both of them to face up to their fears. And who knows – maybe this beautiful duet will also lead to a beautiful romance? From the queen of Greek romance comes a story that will heal those heartstrings and make you believe in love again... When the grandfather, Pericles Rizopoulos, a proud old man, tells his fascinating, tragic and true stories of the Nazi occupation of Greece during World War II and the following Greek Civil War, to his twenty-something grandson, Perry Giuseppe Rizopoulos, Perry’s philosophical reflections on his grandfather’s stories along with his own memories of growing up in his extended Greek/Italian/American family in the Bronx combine to create an enduring story about the strength created by a tightly-knit family and the powerful values passed down from generation to generation.

Eliana is introspective and thoughtful, and a movie buff who is living with depression. Dmitri quite literally falls for Eliana when he sees her in gym class and slams into a classmate. The pair then navigate the ins and outs of first love. Exciting, scary, unexpected, and so much more difficult than they ever imagined. They say opposites attract, but they soon realize that there is so much they just don’t understand about each other. It begs the question: How long can first love possibly last when you’re so different?

Book excerpt: This “excellent anthology” of noir fiction set in Canada’s City of Glass features all-new stories by Linda L. Richards, Sam Wiebe, Yasuko Thanh and more (Quill & Quire, starred review). For many people, Vancouver is a city of affluence, athleisure, and craft beer. But if look a little closer at this gentrified paradise, you’ll find the old saying holds true: behind every fortune there’s a crime. Hidden beneath Vancouver’s gleaming glass skyscrapers are shadowy streets where poverty, drugs, and violence rule the day. These fourteen stories of crime and mayhem in the Pacific Northwest offer an entertaining “mix of wily pros, moody misfits, bewildered bystanders, and a touch of the supernatural” (Kirkus). Vancouver Noir features the Arthur Ellis Award-winning story “Terminal City” by Linda L. Richards, and the Arthur Ellis Award-finalist “Wonderful Life” by Sam Wiebe. It also includes entries by Timothy Taylor, Sheena Kamal, Robin Spano, Carleigh Baker, Dietrich Kalteis, Nathan Ripley, Yasuko Thanh, Kristi Charish, Don English, Nick Mamatas, S.G. Wong, and R.M. Greenaway.

Book excerpt: Told through the eyes of an observant and resilient boy, the book begins with the German seizure of Athens in 1941. Grim events of war, displacement, and exile never extinguish the curiosity – even the joys – of his childhood. Compelling writing mixes reality and fantasy to concoct a memorable tribute to the human spirit, from Asia Minor to Greece to Canada. — Douglas Babington, the Bivouac Prayers. “The ugliest phases of the Civil War were just beginning. It would pit household against household, village against village, and sometimes, brother against brother. The blood-letting would go on and on. The adults seemed to sense that all of this was going to happen and they only spoke in muted tones.” — Tasouli With curiosity and humor Tasouli tells us about his life, including stories about his cat the Resistance hero, the intricate relationships between a young Jewish physician, German offi cers, and Greek partisan communists and their British captives. A strange character appears in his dreams, sometimes supportive, sometimes terrifying, and they develop a strong bond. Occupation Child is ultimately about how a child views hunger, language, politics and love.
