Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, Paul Morris went to Angola as a reluctant conscript soldier, where he experienced the fear and filth of war. Twenty-five years later, in 2012, Paul returned to Angola, and embarked on a 1500-kilometre cycle trip, solo and unsupported, across the country. His purpose was to see Angola in peacetime, to replace the war map in his mind with a more contemporary peace map, to exorcise the ghosts of war once and for all. Shifting skilfully between present and past, Back to Angola chronicles Paul’s epic journey, from Cuito Cuanavale to the remnants of his unit’s base in northern Namibia, and vividly recreates his experiences as a young soldier caught up in a war in a foreign land. Along the way, the book provides thought-provoking reflections on childhood, masculinity, violence, trauma and friendship. Back to Angola is an honest, intelligent and deeply moving account of war and its effects on an individual mind, a generation of people, and the psyche and landscape of a country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A situationship, a heartbreak, a mistake—you can call it what you want. But was it love? It's 2016, and Sloane Hart's senior year of college is bound to be the best one yet. Her nights consist of drinking cheap vodka and singing along to The Chainsmokers with her friends, and her days are spent writing as she prepares for the post-grad life in New York City she's always dreamed of. The last thing she needs is for a guy to get in the way of her goals. With graduation so close, she just needs to focus on landing a job and enjoying this last year with her best friends all under one roof. But that plan becomes a little more complicated when her upstairs neighbor, Ethan Brady, enters the picture. Ethan's pull is undeniable. He's tall, mysterious, and handsome as hell, and when Sloane is with him, the entire world slows to a halt. But Ethan's guarded past is too hurtful for him to face, and if letting Sloane in means that the walls he's built around his heart would come crumbling down, he may not be willing to let that happen. As their chemistry and connection intensify, Sloane finds herself falling deeper and deeper, but will Ethan ever be ready to catch her? Nostalgic, heartfelt, and profoundly cathartic, Call It What You Want is an ode to almost-love stories—the kinds with no labels, no promises, and the potential to turn your entire world upside down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Languages with free word orders pose daunting challenges to linguistic theory because they raise questions about the nature of grammatical strings. Ross, who coined the term Scrambling to refer to the relatively ‘free’ word orders found in Germanic languages (among others) notes that “... the problems involved in specifying exactly the subset of the strings which will be generated ... are far too complicated for me to even mention here, let alone come to grips with” (1967:52). This book offers a radical re-analysis of middle field Scrambling. It argues that Scrambling is a concatenation effect, as described in Stroik’s (1999, 2000, 2007) Survive analysis of minimalist syntax, driven by an interpretable referentiality feature [Ref] to the middle field, where syntactically encoded features for temporality and other world indices are checked. The purpose of this book is to investigate the syntactic properties of middle field Scrambling in synchronic West Germanic languages, and to explore, to what possible extent we can classify Scrambling as a ‘syntactic phenomenon’ within Survive-minimalist desiderata.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addresses the problems scrambling langauges provide for the existing syntactic theories by analyzing the interaction of semantic and discourse functional factors with syntactic properties of word order in this type of languages, and by discussing the implications of this interaction for Universal Grammar. Three interrelated goals are carefully followed in this work. The first is to analyze the syntactic structure of Persian, a language which exhibits free word order. With this analysis, the author has accounted for the relative order of categorized expressions, the motivation for their possible rearrangements, and the grammatical results of those reorderings. In this respect, a broad range of major syntactic phenomena, including object shift, Case, Extended Projection Principle (EPP), binding, and scope interpretation of quantifiers, interrogative phrases, adverbial phrases, and negative elements are examined. This monograph is the first major theoretical work ever published on Persian, and therefore fills the existing gap by providing insight into the syntactic structure of this language. The second goal is to connect these insights to similar linguistic properties in languages in which scrambling occurs (e.g. German, Dutch, Hindi, Russian, Japanese, and Korean), and to provide a deeper understanding of this group of genetically diverse, but typologically related languages. The final and principal goal is to situate the results of this work within the framework of the Minimalist Program (MP). The investigations in this study indicate that scrambling is not an optional rule, and that certain principles of MP, such as the Minimal Link Condition, are only seemingly violated in these languages. Furthermore, it is shown that careful analysis of scrambling with respect to binding and scope relations, and a reanalysis of the properties of A and A' movements, cast some doubts on the relevance of a typology of movement in natural language.

This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon.

Book excerpt: In this hyperkinetic and relentlessly inventive novel, Japan’s most popular (and controversial) fiction writer hurtles into the consciousness of the West. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World draws readers into a narrative particle accelerator in which a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, Lauren Bacall, Bob Dylan, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters collide to dazzling effect. What emerges is simultaneously cooler than zero and unaffectedly affecting, a hilariously funny and deeply serious meditation on the nature and uses of the mind. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Book excerpt: Scramblers and shift register generators (SRG) have been used for decades in the shaping of digital transmission signals and in generating pseudo-random binary sequences for transmission applications. In recent years more attention has been paid to this area than ever before due to the change of today's telecommunication environment. This publication presents the theory and applications of three scrambling techniques - Frame Synchronous Scrambling (FSS), Distributed Sample Scrambling (DSS) and Self Synchronous Scrambling (SSS) with an emphasis on their application in digital transmission. Based on the authors' research over the past ten years, this is the first book of its kind.

Book excerpt: They Still Don't Get It! Fox News military analyst Colonel David Hunt cuts like a buzz saw through the half-measures and half-truths, the dangerous timidity, and the outright stupidity that-if left unchecked-will lead America to lose the War on Terror. Colonel David Hunt's book is a call to arms and a gut check. If the American people don't demand protection from terror killers, we won't get it. On the Hunt lays out a clear strategy for our survival. --Bill O'Reilly, Fox News Channel Clausewitz would read this great book, and so should you. With his bracing On the Hunt, Colonel Hunt has told us how to win the War on Terror. Our country would be a lot better off if we all take his words to heart, do what he says, and then buy another copy to send to your congressional representatives. --Bob Drury, coauthor of Halsey's Typhoon Colonel Hunt is on top of his game in On the Hunt. It's a no-holds-barred rant-he skewers neocon, moonbat, and pencil pusher alike. If you think the colonel's blunt on TV, wait until you read him blistering the hacks of every stripe who are blowing the War on Terror and still don't get it. --Howie Carr, radio host and bestselling author of The Brothers Bulger
