Download or read book Well Then There Now written by Juliana Spahr and published by Black Sparrow Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accretion, articulation, exploration, transformation, naming, sentiment, private and public property - these are just a few of Juliana Spahr's interests. From her first poem, written in Honolulu, Hawaii, to the last, written in Berkeley, California, about her childhood in Appalachia, Spahr takes us on a wild patchwork journey backwards and forwards in time and space, tracking change - in ecology, society, economies, herself. Through a collage of "found language," a deep curiosity about place, and a restless intelligence, Spahr demonstrates the vibrant possibilities of investigatory poetics"--P. [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: The Corona Virus of 2020 has brought a devastation of life and economy very few of us have seen in our lifetime. As many as 500,000 people may die before the pandemic is fully arrested, but can you imagine a pandemic so horrible and so deadly that 25 million people died? It took place over a four-year period from 1347 to 1351 and was called the Black Death or the Great Plague. By the time it was over, half the population of Europe had been wiped out. Julian of Norwich was herself a victim of the deadly epidemic. Born in 1342, she was five-years-old when the plague swept through her home town in East Anglia, taking the life of her beloved mother. Through the grace of God, Julian would servive to enter the novitiate of a Benedictine convent and eventually become a highly revered Anchoress and Spiritual Director to countless hundreds who sought her advice. This historical fiction, JULIANA, tells her story and the story of the young woman she befriended and guided by the name of Maggie. In the book, Maggie or Margery Kempe was physically abused by her own father, a prominent figure as the mayor of Bishop's Lynn. From such dark and desperate threads, this amazing mystic of the 14th century would weave a tapestry of incomparable beauty and hope. In these deadly and uncertain days of pandemic, do we not need now just such a path of light?

Book Synopsis The Rules of Love and Law by : Jeff Russell
Download or read book The Rules of Love and Law written by Jeff Russell and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Things are good in Baltimore, Maryland in 1938. A lot better for some than others, but thankfully the worst of the Depression is over for everyone. And since the rumblings of war in Europe are an ocean away, American democracy, equality, and ‘justice for all’ are safe and secure. And on Thanksgiving Day two very different people meet. Juliana Corbeau is a near perfect example of blue-blood upbringing. She’s a debutant, heiress, and lives in the city’s most prestigious neighborhood. Will Stahl isn’t anything at all like Juliana. He’s a working-class immigrant’s son and lives in a rowhouse. Yet he too is a near perfect example, that of a first-generation American. He’s a scholarship law student who’s idealistic, ambitious, and anxious to make a difference in the world. Neither of them knew it the night they met, but their differences in social class would be the least of their problems. Their unlikely love story begins when Juliana is assaulted, or so it seemed, and Will rescues her. That chance meeting puts them on a path that shouldn’t have led anywhere, but does, and eventually they must confront not only the class distinctions and prejudices which separate them, but also a tragic miscarriage of justice, danger for family trapped in Nazi Germany, and a fateful Supreme Court decision. When the war finally reaches America at Pearl Harbor everything changes again, forcing them to make impossible choices about love, family, justice—and ultimately their very lives.

Book Synopsis Christianity, LGBTQ Suicide, and the Souls of Queer Folk by : Cody J. Sanders
Download or read book Christianity, LGBTQ Suicide, and the Souls of Queer Folk written by Cody J. Sanders and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While garnering the attention of professionals across disciplines, from medicine to public health to psychology, and frequently covered as a topic of public concern in the news media, the elevated occurrence of suicide attempts among LGBTQ persons has received little attention within the literature of theology and religious studies. This book fills that lacuna by addressing the role that religious, spiritual, and theological narratives play in shaping the souls of queer folk. Taking a narrative approach to qualitative interview material from LGBTQ individuals who survived their suicide attempts, Cody J. Sanders argues that theological narratives can operate violently upon the souls of LGBTQ people in ways that make life precarious and, at time, seem unlivable. The book critically addresses the violence of theological narratives upon queer souls, filling a crucial void in scholarship concerning the role of religion—specifically Christianity—in LGBTQ suicide. Ultimately, the author draws upon the interview material to move readers toward constructive methods of contributing to the resistance and resilience of queer souls in relation to soul violence, asking how we can intervene with practices of care in order to cultivate livability of life for queer people.
