Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minnesota’s toughest farm boys take on Iraqi insurgents in one of the most irreverent and outrageous memoirs to come out of the Iraq War. When they deployed for Iraq, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry Regiment of the Minnesota National Guard, was mostly composed of farm kids from the Midwest. But make no mistake—these boys could replace a tank track on the side of the road using nothing but a crescent wrench, Zippo lighter, and a two-by-four. Once they arrived, they fought alongside the Marine Corps in Anbar province through the deadliest period of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Bravo Company earned the nickname “Bristol’s Bastards” after USMC Colonel George Bristol, commanding officer of the IMEF Headquarters Group, adopted this band of fierce warriors as one of his own. Specialist Nick Maurstad, a member of Bristol’s Bastards, brings to life the experience of fighting in Iraq: kicking down doors, dodging IEDs, battling insurgents in the small towns surrounding Fallujah, and trying to help one another survive in the deadliest place on earth.

Book excerpt: Nairobi In route to address a room filled with college-bound seniors my car dies. Pressed for time, I’m forced to do something I avoid like rule-breakers — public transportation. I hate subways and crowded buses; I evade them like men below my pay grade. Rule #5. I’ve sworn off the male population, because of my limited experience with them. If they knew my secret, I’d become a conquest. Twenty-eight years old, and no man has popped my cork, at least what Zaire, my sister, calls it. Despite my sexual reservations, crowded buses made me claustrophobic. I can’t help noticing how handsome the bus driver, Theo Jameson, is. A green-eyed, square-jawed stunner captivates me at once. Theo's charm and good looks are a consolation for a crappy day. Against my better judgment, agree to go out with him. Set for an evening of cheap dining, I’m struck speechless when Theo invites me to one of D.C.’s choicest restaurants. Dressed to the nines, not what I expected. Theo looks powerful in control. Like he made important business decisions like the CEO of a multi-million-dollar company, it made little sense to me considering he drove a bus for a living. His story seemed murky and left me puzzled certain there is more to Theo Jameson than meets the eye. Theo I believe it’s better to show than tell and let Nairobi think what she wants about me. Her mind made up already, although I don’t hide my lifestyle from her. I’m referred to as, Prince of the City, by my closest friends. I don’t mind the title and not far away from who I am. My heart is massive, and so is my bank account. Nairobi has placed me in the friends without benefits category, but I’m not okay with it. I could tell her I’m worth billions but know to win her heart; I first must gain her trust.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction. “A panoramic social novel with a needle-sharp point of view sends up both small-town America and politics” (People). Acclaimed bestselling author Sheri Holman’s third novel, The Mammoth Cheese, has been hailed as “stunning . . . a Great American Novel par excellence” by Newsday and by The New York Times Book Review as “lovely, disarming . . . tough, sad and surprisingly sweet.” Three Chimneys, Virginia resident Margaret Pricket, a single mother and specialty cheese maker, is in danger of losing all she holds dear. Her century-old family dairy farm is falling deeper into debt. Her thirteen-year-old daughter Polly, whom Margaret has tried to shelter from the modern world, is becoming perilously drawn towards her charismatic, subversive history teacher. Her loyal farmhand August, a Thomas Jefferson impersonator by night, is secretly in love with her. And she’s been convinced by the town’s pastor to recreate the original Thomas Jefferson-era, 1,235-pound “Mammoth Cheese,” as a gift for the President elect. Soon the entire town is wrapped up in the endeavor, and Margaret finds herself torn between her principles and her passions. An American pastoral like no other, The Mammoth Cheese is a delicious and satisfying tour de force. A San Francisco Chronicle Best Book A Publishers Weekly Book of the Year A Book Sense 76 Selection “Holman has fashioned a tale that is poignant and powerful and, like an award-winning cheese, surprisingly complex.”—The Washington Post Book World “A capacious book. Huge and amazing things happen within it.”—The Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well, I hope you enjoyed the storiesall are TRUEthat I wanted to share with you in this book! I promise to keep tabs on things that occur from this point on so that I can put them into the sequel. Like I stated in the Preface, anyone can write a book of this kindabout the crazy, exotic experiences they have experienced or witnesses on subways, buses, cruises, tour buses, elevators, and the like. Its just a matter of putting your experiences to paper, or computer files. Throughout this book, I made references to the fact that many people who also witnessed these occurrences sort of said or did nothing, that they just did not want to get involved. This was evident in their making believe that they did not see or hear anythingthat they were just oblivious to the situationthat they just didnt want to get involved! That is why I have coined the expression pulling a Sergeant Schultz. Im confident that Sergeant Schultz, played by the late John Banner in the 1960s series Hogans Heroes, is the one who made believe he did not see or hear or know anything that was going on that wasnt acceptable. His famous words were I see No-THING, No-THING! and I know No-THING, No-THING! This was evident in the Kitty Genovese murder case, as occurred in Kew Gardens, Queens, New York City on March 13, 1964. As described by Wikipedia, Kitty Genovese was a young woman murdered by a killer who came back a second time, to finish the job, and nobodynone of those who heard or witnessed itintervened or called the police. This has often been called the By Stander Effect or the Genovese Syndromebasically all those who heard the commotion or witnessed the crime pulled a Sergeant Schultz! They saw N0-THING, No-THING, they heard No-THING, No-THING, they knew No-THING, No-THING, they DID No-THING, No-THING! One thing that I am hoping for is that the expression that I coined in this book, pulling a Sergeant Schultz will become a new expression.I think you know what I mean by new expressionwords and expressions that pop up over time and become part of the English language, even unofficiallywords and expressions like dis, right-on rock-n-roll disco hip-hop my bad, couch potato, going green, ambulance chaser, and many others. One thing about these new words and expressions that they all seem to have in common is that nobody seems to know WHERE these words came from, nor WHO actually coined them! My hope is that pulling a Sergeant Schultz will become another one of those new expressions. If that happens, we will ALL know who coined it, the one and only R.J. Nobleman, and WHERE the phrase was coinedSORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE/GOING YOUR WAY!

Book excerpt: If you used to be a punk, you never where! I wasn't even twelve years old in 1976 when I heard about this "New Thing" from England called: PUNK ROCK! Something completely new, snotty and revolutionary. A musical and verbal revolution against the Establishment! A punch right in the face of the whining love song era! I was immediately affected...or better said: infected! It started with The Sex Pistols and The Damned - but when I heard Jean Jacques Burnel's bass guitar in "Goodbye Toulouse" by The Stranglers I was totally stoked! Then as now, the music has never lost its power and energy, and I love all these songs like the first day I heard them! In this book I'm attempting to describe the beginning of the Punk movement in Bremen - a very unpopular and rough German city - especially in the 80s. About the ongoing battles with right-wing Skinheads, and how we had to scrape together every penny just so we could go to as many cool shows as possible. First in Bremen, then other German cities, then in England (the Promised Land of Punk Rock!), and later in California. To me, it's an ongoing, never-ending adventure. Finally, In 2012, I "landed" in the Bay Area. In December 2014 I became 50 years old and Punk Rock is still, to this day, the only kind of music that always gives me goose bumps! And this will never change - as with many of the other "infected" - to my last breath!

Book excerpt: Los Angeles transportation's epic scale--its iconic freeways, Union Station, Los Angeles International Airport and the giant ports of its shores--has obscured many offbeat transit stories of moxie and eccentricity. Triumphs such as the Vincent Thomas Bridge and Mac Barnes's Ground Link buspool have existed alongside such flops as the Santa Monica Freeway Diamond Lane and the Oxnard-Los Angeles Caltrain commuter rail. The City of Angels lacks a propeller-driven monorail and a freeway in the paved bed of the Los Angeles River, but not for a lack of public promoters. Horace Dobbins built the elevated California Cycleway in Pasadena, and Mike Kadletz deployed the Pink Buses for Orange County kids hitchhiking to the beach. Join Charles P. Hobbs as he recalls these and other lost episodes of LA-area transportation lore.

"Full of horror" - KGO Radio. Over 275 on-the-job true stories collected by reporter Alan Allen over 20 years by San Francisco municipal railway drivers of cable cars, diesel buses, streetcars, trolleys & trams. (This is an abridged version of A Noah's Ark of Recurring Celebration, with just the Muni stories & photos of working cable cars, diesel buses, streetcars, trolleys & trams in it. In San Francisco, the Muni drivers enjoy a mythic quality. One of the few blue collar jobs left in a city that was once dominated by working class prople, Muni drivers are the heartthrob of their riders and the scapegoat of the press and upper management. The Muni driver is blamed if the vehicles run late; but the management determines their schedules, not the drivers. Victims of their own union, the driveres and their friends know their union is only a paper tiger that can not be trusted. At the same time, each Muni driver is awash in a sea of what is commonly referred to, as, the public. The public may be drunk, happy, sad, armed and dangerous, stoned, flirtatious, helpful, threatening, wild or sedate for any reason at any time with or without provocation. Some drivers illegally carry guns to protect themselves from thugs. Other drivers are given cookies, casual glances and flirtatious smiles. Accidents occur. Drivers are followed and tailed by supervisors eager to complete the transition from driver, to supervisor, to union management then to city management of the Municipal Railway -- which is accomplished by getting as many drivers in trouble as possible. All this drama and melodrama is as routine as getting stuck in traffic, it's all part of the job for San Francisco's Storytellin' Muni Drivers.
