Download or read book The Winner's Game written by Kevin Alan Milne and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since seventeen-year-old Ann Bennett was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition two years ago, her family has been pulling apart. Ann and her two younger siblings fight constantly, as do their parents. When the doctors announce that Ann's only hope of survival is a heart transplant by the end of the summer, the Bennetts decide to wait for news of a donor at a family vacation home on the Oregon coast, near Haystack Rock. But rather than healing their differences, the time away only widens the rifts between them. That is, until they learn about The Winner's Game, a game their great grandparents invented to save their marriage decades ago. It doesn't work immediately, it takes some time to figure out the right way to play, but little by little things start to change. It seems everything might be okay, until the day tragedy strikes, and they are confronted with what it really means to love -- and to be a family.
Download or read book Coming Full Circle written by Wanda Lloyd and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Inspiring reading for aspiring journalists and students of civil rights.” — Kirkus Reviews Wanda Smalls Lloyd’s Coming Full Circle: From Jim Crow to Journalism—with a foreword by best-selling author Tina McElroy Ansa—is the memoir of an African American woman who grew up privileged and educated in the restricted culture of the American South in the 1950s–1960s. Her path was shaped by segregated social, community, and educational systems, religious and home training, a strong cultural foundation, and early leadership opportunities. Despite Jim Crow laws that affected where she lived, how she was educated, and what civil rights she would be denied, Lloyd grew up to realize her childhood dream of working as a professional journalist. In fact, she would eventually hold some of the nation’s highest-ranking newspaper editorial positions and become one of the first African American women to be the top editor of a mainstream daily newspaper. Along the way she helped her newspapers and other media organizations understand how the lack of newsroom and staff diversity interfered with perceptions of accuracy and balance for their audiences. Her memoir is thus a window on the intersection of race, gender, culture and the media’s role in our uniquely American experiment in democracy. How Lloyd excelled in a profession where high-ranking African American women were rare is a memorable story that will educate, entertain, and inspire. Coming Full Circle is a self-reflective exploration of the author’s life journey from growing up in coastal Savannah, Georgia, to editing roles at seven daily newspapers around the country, and circling back to her retirement in Savannah, where she now teaches journalism to a new generation.

Book excerpt: My heart is broken in two. Gosh, I really never knew it could be so finite or just this definitive. I never knew a slice could be so even-or a paring knife this sharp. They say, "Out of sight, out of mind." They say, "Friendship is the only rose without a thorn." They say, "It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." And they say: "Happiness is two scoops of ice cream-A warm puppy." The other day, Peter said, "You'll never have as much money as me! You'll never have a career like mine! You'll always be behind me, trailing!" After a twenty-six-year-old woman unsuccessfully tries to hang herself in her bedroom, she begins to reminisce about her past loves. There was Brian, her first serious boyfriend, and then Cal, the one they called "Mr. Personality." But it's Peter, a famous, older author with whom she has been involved for three years, that she just can't quite let go. A conversation with her mother opens the window into her soul, helping her realize that she is not defined solely by her relationships, but something much deeper.
