Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Life of the Blessed Virgin In the Virginal womb of the humble maiden is conceived the Eternal, He whom the Whole universe cannot con tain. In the arms of an earthly mother, the Infinite lies a helpless babe. Yet He it is who, equal to the Father, supplies existence to all creation, Who by His omnipotence and authority stills the storms at sea, supplies to the mighty rivers their inexhaustible sources of water, and yet is content to be nourished with the scanty sustenance that His lowly Mother can supply. No human discourse can be found worthy and competent to describe the' glories of her from whom the Redeemer between God and man was pleased to assume His sacred body and blood. This sublime privilege, pre-eminently her own and shared by no other creature, elevates her to an eminence more exalted than has ever been granted tQ any other created being. It raises her up near to the Godhead, and constitutes her the channel of many blessings in the Old Law and in the New. Yet, not of course with regard to her own person, but in relation to her divine Son. Mary is the wonder of wonders, a new creation, a peculiar spirit world. What man is in the order of nature, what Jesus Christ is in the order of glory, such is Mary in the order of grace. She is the crown, the high and middle point of the order of salvation. Mother of God! St. Peter Damian, in his eloquent sermon on the birth of the Blessed Virgin, thus gives expression to his exalted conception of the dignity of Mary's motherhood: "In what words may mortal man be permitted to pronounce the praises of her who herself brought forth that Divine Word who lives for all eternity? Where can tongue be found holy and pure enough to eulogize her who bore the Author of all created things, whom the elements praise and obey with fear and trembling? If we wish to extol a martyr's heroism, to recount his acts of virtue, to describe his devotion to his Saviour's cause and honor, facts which belong to the province of human experience supply us with words and circumstances. But when we undertake to write the glories of the Blessed Virgin, we enter upon new, unknown ground-on a subject transcending all human effort. We fail to find words suitable to portray her sublime mysteries and prerogatives. "What power of intellect is able to explain the mystery of the Creator's coming forth from His own creature? "In the virginal womb of the humble maiden is conceived the Eternal, He whom the whole universe cannot contain. No human discourse can be found worthy and competent to describe the glories of her from whom the Redeemer between God and man was pleased to assume His sacred body and blood." All the great and glorious deeds performed in God's honor and to man's benefit cannot be compared with what Mary has done for us.

Not in words only, but by deeds even more, it shows her the most beautiful devotion. It finds daily, ingeniously enough, new methods to rejoice her soul, and have her to feel its deep veneration for her. Children never tire of repeating the praises of their mother. They cherish the tenderest affection for her, whose loveliness is ever present before their eyes. In the home, they gather around her; when absent they think of her and long to return to her gentle smile and loving embrace. In their appreciation of her, she is the best, the fairest, the greatest, yes, the noblest, the most lovable, the most beautiful of all women. There is none comparable to her. She surpasses all others. They laud her on every possible occasion, and resent the slightest reflection upon the beauty of her heart or soul. Their life is wholly wrapped up in hers. Our love and devotion for our sweet loving Mother Mary caused us to write this book in her honor. As one of her children, we wish to lay at the feet of the most admirable of mothers our meed of homage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From the visions of Blessed Catherine Emmerich detailing how the Holy Mother lived and was assumed into Heaven to become our Eternal Queen, and +Brand new illustrations from Sequential Artist Jacob Rice +Study questions +Biography and +A Treatise on Catholic Theology and the Bible. The Glories of Mary is a classic of Mariology, written during the 18th century by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, the great Doctor of the Church. The book was written at a time when Jansenists criticized Marian devotions, and was written in part as a defense of Marian devotion. The book combines numerous citations in favor of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary from the Church Fathers and the Doctors of the Church with Saint Alphonsus' own personal views on Marian veneration and includes a number of Marian prayers and practices. Part 1 focuses on the Salve Regina and explains how God gave Mary to mankind as the "Gate of Heaven". St. Alphonsus quotes Saint Bonaventure: "No one can enter Heaven unless by Mary, as though through a door." Part 2 deals with the key Marian feasts such as the Immaculate Conception, Nativity, Purification, Annunciation, Assumption, etc. Part 3 looks at the Seven Sorrows of Mary, explaining how her "prolonged martyrdom" was greater than that of all other martyrs. In part 4 fourth we discuss ten different virtues of the Blessed Virgin, while part 5 rounds out the work with a collection of prayers, meditations and devotions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blessed Virgin Nothing could have made plainer the universal belief of Christendom than the rejoicing with which this definition of the Divine Motherhood of Mary was greeted. The place of meeting had been the Cathedral of Ephesus. There, with all his eloquence, the great St. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria, had defended Mary's right to her sublime title of Mother of God before the vast and splendid Council of Bishops gathered beneath its roof. Outside of the sacred edifice the people thronged about, waiting for the decision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends of Our Lady Mary the Perpetual Virgin and Her Mother Hanna Vllis the only copy of the Life of Hanna In Ethiopic known to me. Two of the manuscripts were large handsome volumes about 16 inches square, and each contained a good selection of the Miracles of the Virgin mary, illustrated with many full-page pictures painted in bright colours which were intended to illustrate the texts of the Miracles. The older of these mss. Was written in the xvith century and the other about a century later; each had been made for the use of a royal personage. Another manuscript contained the Life of Mab a'a seyon, a comparatively modern Ethio pian saint, and the Life of Gabra krestos, a prince who abandoned his royal state and home and parents, and became a mendicant monk. These Lives were illus trated by a large series of coloured pictures, which are of Special interest as they portray events in the daily life of the modern Abyssinians: I sent to Lady Meux a description of these mss. Pointing out their interest and importance, and their great value from an artistic point of view. I also told the Keeper of Oriental Manu scripts in the British Museum of them, and urged him to attempt to acquire them for the National Collection. But his official financial position was such that it was impossible for him to make an offer for them which Mr. Quaritch would accept, and so the whole group of mss., together with a few smaller works, became the property of Lady Meux, who added them to her Col lection of Egyptian and Sudani antiquities preserved in the museum at Theobalds Park. The nucleus of this Collection was made by Sir Henry and Lady Meux when they visited Egypt In 1878 and 1882. In the former year Lady Meux with a small party succeeded In getting as far south as Sarras, and they visited Semnah and Kummah, and some of the forts In the Second Cataract between Sarras and Wadi Halfah. On their way down the Nile from Aswan Lady Meux picked up several objects of Interest among thembeing the important figures of Nebseni and his wife, who flourished about b.c. I 550. A substantial part of the Collection as it was in 1897 was made by myself in Egypt under permission from the Trustees of the British Museum, and the total number of Egyptian objects in the Theobalds Park Museum was one thou sand four hundred. In 1886 Mr. Walter Ingram pre sented to Lady Meux the now notorious mummy and coffin of nes-amsu (nes-menu), a prophet of the god Menu at Panopolis about b.c. 350. Many absurd stories have been published about this mummy, which it has been alleged caused the death of Mr. Ingram, and it will be well to state the facts concerning its acqui sition, which I had direct from him and from the natives at Luxor who were present when he purchased it.
