Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Lectures on Horsemanship In all branches of human science and strife, it is of great importance, to search for the origin of what we recognize as being a weighty factor in the evolution of the universe. An original idea, which in the course of centuries given rise to might facts, has often lain dormant in the chaos of changing times and circumstances, because the general tide of affairs prevented its growth. The human mind often requires an incentive to awaken its innate vigor to consciousness, and only then does it ascend on the wings of knowledge, to the creation of all things beautiful and great, in honor of itself and for the benefit of humanity. "Let there be light!" was the command of God, which caused the chaos of the world to pass into a state of harmonious order. Light caused the functions of the universe to act and unrestrained they go on crushing all, that stands in the way of knowledge and progress. In this progressive course errors separate themselves and allows us to distinguish truth from untruth. May the light of truth open the way for, and encourage in their efforts men of perseverance, who arouse themselves from the lassitude of everyday life, to independent thought and action, in the pursuit of greater knowledge. The battle between merit and mediocrity, requires courage and endurance, even self denial and sacrifice, because mediocrity is supported by the indiscriminating majority, who know of nothing better and in their mental indolence desire nothing new; while the advocates of merit, being in the minority, are unable to overcome the lethargy of the masses. Only the continued appeal to the intellectual, and faith in the overwhelming power of the enlightened mind, will maintain the courage of those, who are called upon to continue the strife for that, which emanated from the tests of experience and scientific investigation. Equipped with the results of indefatigable study of a life time and undeniable experience in the field of the art of riding. I have undertaken the task of bringing before the educated world these lectures, which are caculated to demonstrate that, like in every other art or science, a high standard can be reached in the art of riding if the same amount of love and constant application is given it, as is the case for instance with music, painting and other arts. Book excerpt: Because of the great demand for the book: "The Rider Forms the Horse", which was first published in 1939, and the ongoing topicality of this topic, Xenophon Press decided to reissue this unique work. In this book, the authors Udo Bürger and Otto Zietzschmann describe the requirements for successful training and ultimately for a long and healthy life as a riding horse in a very understandable and clear way. The authors explain physiological findings as the basis for riding lessons and explain important clues for training the horse and recognizing and resolving training problems. This is confirmed by the team Olympic champion and former national trainer of dressage riders Klaus Strahlhol: Countless top horses disappear into obscurity due to improper training, never to be seen again, while other difficult and rather averagely gifted horses are transformed into top horses with good trainers. What is needed is an understanding of the connections between muscle activity and the skeleton in the interaction during the various training phases and lessons, regardless of which branch of riding you choose. Target group: For all responsible riders and trainers who are involved in the training of horses as well as for tournament judges and equine veterinarians

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book chock-full of answers to horse-behavior questions that will change your horse's life for the better. Horses want partners they trust. Meeting their need for security makes them more tuned-in, calmer, and more reliable. In her engaging book, highly illustrated with professional color photographs, certified riding instructor Lynn Acton, MS, shows you how, with practical step-by-step instructions. You’ll see that progress can be surprisingly fast with methods that are gentle, time-tested, backed by science, and that make intuitive sense to your horse. Discover how to earn trust and make training more efficient by engaging horses’ innate intelligence, maintaining clear two-way communication, and considering their point of view. This leadership approach has been used successfully for centuries by people of all backgrounds and skill levels on horses at all levels of training. Acton refers to this relationship as Protector Leadership because you are the horse’s protector. In these pages, she combines extensive horse experience and an academic background in social dynamics with in-depth research. She interprets and cites the scientific findings that explain why Protector Leadership works, and offers valuable insights into equine psychology while exposing myths that are sources of problems. Plus, Acton includes “Things to Try” at the end of each chapter—fun and easy-to-implement exercises that help you engage your horse as a thinking partner Throughout, the narrative includes stories of Acton's progress with her own horses, including mistakes and hindsight, and especially the transformation of the book’s "cover girl" Brandy from a dangerous throwaway to a happy, reliable partner. Clear, detailed photographs show the subtle body language of horses and people, and illustrate critical interactions that make a real difference in our relationships, communication, and training. These are a few of the concrete skills you will learn: · Earn trust starting the moment you meet a horse. · Recognize “misbehavior” that actually means your horse is thinking like a partner. · Turn pressure into clear communication instead of stress. · Use Positive Reinforcement for better learning, behavior, and reliability. · Turn anxiety and spooks into confidence building situations. · Discourage unwanted behavior without punishment. · Allow your horse appropriate choices and freedom. As your bond strengthens, you can enjoy watching your horse’s true personality blossom. A thoughtful, progressive book for riders of all disciplines and students of the horse of all experience levels.
