Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive book in five volumes that focuses on environmental fate prediction and quantitative structure activity relationship analysis. This book is like no other in that it tackles environmental fate calculations and QSAR Plots. Environmental partitioning and persistence are calculated in a generic "unit world" using standard fugacity models. This shows where the chemicals will go, relative concentrations, persistence, and important intermedia transport processes. From this information, a behavior profile emerges that can be presented in a standard format. For the series of chemicals presented in the book, QSAR Plots can be prepared by plotting these properties against molecular descriptors (e.g., carbon number, chlorine number, molar number) and relationships between properties can be explored. This helps validate the data and estimates of properties for other chemicals can be made from these plots. The chemicals included in these volumes will contain the following information: Chemical Name CAS Number Structure Molecular Mass Molar Volume Melting and Boiling Points Water Solubility Octanol-Water Partition Coefficient Vapor Pressure Organic Carbon-Water Partition Coefficient Bioconcentration Factor Henry's Law Constant Dissociation Constant Estimated Half-Lives in Air, Water, Soil, Sediments Full references and methods of measurement will be given. Multiple values will be cited and a recommendation made for a "best" value.

Book excerpt: Fate and Transport provides the equations and background information you need to predict the fate and transport of chemicals in air, water, soil, flora, and fauna, and to prevent your exposure to toxic chemicals. Featuring 22 new mathematical calculations for predicting the fate and transport of 100 non-pesticide organic compounds, this Third Edition provides you with easy-to-read explanations of how chemicals travel through the environmental compartments, how they break down, and how key physical and chemical properties of chemicals (including water solubility, volatility, and soil sorbtion or adsorption) affect fate and transport. The book also addresses methods for predicting pesticide and fish hazards, offer complete samples of calculations and exposure analyses, includes date for 203 commonly encountered chemical substances, and explains hazard prediction based on chemical structure.

Book excerpt: There is need in environmental research for a book on fresh waters including rivers and lakes. Compared with other books on the topic, this book has a unique outline in that it follows pollution from sources to impact. Included in the text is the treatment of various tracers, ranging from pathogens to stable isotopes of elements and providing a comprehensive discussion which is lacking in many other books on pollution control of natural waters. Geophysical processes are discussed emphasizing mixing of water, interaction between water and the atmosphere, and sedimentation processes. Important geochemistry processes occurring in natural waters are described as are the processes specific to nutrients, organic pollutants, metals, and pathogens in subsequent chapters. Each of these chapters includes an introduction on the selected groups, followed by the physicochemical properties which are the most relevant to their behavior in natural waters, and the theories and models to describe their speciation, transport and transformation. The book also includes the most up to date information including a discussion on emerging pollutants such as brominated and phosphate flame retardants, perflurochemicals, and pharmaceutical and personal care products. Due to its importance an ecotoxicology chapter has been included featuring molecular biological methods, nanoparticles, and comparison of the basis of biotic ligand model with the Weibull dose-response model. Finally, the last chapter briefly summarizes the regulations on ambient water quality.

Book excerpt: Perspectives in Life Cycle Impact Assessment: A Structured Approach to Combine Models of the Technosphere, Ecosphere and Valuesphere describes the relationship between subjective and objective elements in Life Cycle Impact Assessment. It suggests a new framework which will allow people to master two of the major problems associated with LCA, the difficulty of separating subjective from objective elements and the tendency for impact assessment to record `phantoms' rather than actual damages. Perspectives in Life Cycle Impact Assessment: A Structured Approach to Combine Models of the Technosphere, Ecosphere and Valuesphere presents a proposal for a second generation framework and method for Life Cycle Impact Assessment. Many of the suggested elements are either based on other tools for environmental analysis, e.g. risk assessment, or fit in well with tools and concepts such as industrial ecology, technology assessment, or environmental impact assessment. The research presented in this book goes beyond the scope of presently used methods for Life Cycle Assessment and may stimulate new developments in a variety of areas. The book will appeal to persons from a wide range of scientific disciplines who are interested in learning more about Life Cycle Assessment. It will be especially valuable to members of SETAC and to students and researchers in the fields of environmental impact assessment, risk assessment and industrial ecology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Concepts in Pollutant Behavior demonstrates how the properties of a chemical determine its fate and distribution in the environment. Over the past thirty years the author has worked with colleagues on addressing problems associated with chemicals, particularly pesticides, and it has become evident how important a chemical perspective can be in understanding and minimizing these problems. Now in a newly updated second edition, this accessible text requires only a basic understanding of chemistry. Classroom tested, it is an excellent resource for students and professionals working in environmental science, toxicology, chemistry, and engineering, as well as ecology, public health, agriculture, and forestry.
