Book excerpt: This study first examines the marginal repertoire in two well-known manuscripts, the Psalter of Guy de Dampierre and an Arthurian Romance, within their material and codicological contexts. This repertoire then provides a template for an extended study of the marginal motifs that appear in eighteen related manuscripts, which range from a Bible to illustrated versions of the encyclopedias of Vincent de Beauvais and Brunetto Latini. Considering the manuscript as a whole work of art, the marginalia’s physical relationship to nearby texts and images can shed light on the reception of these illuminated books by their medieval viewers.

Book excerpt: During the last decades of the thirteenth century, illuminators in Northern France and Flanders were working with an established repertory of images to decorate the margins of manuscripts. This development is best known in the luxury devotional manuals, but a number of the images idiosyncratic to the repertory are also found in the margins of Bibles, romances, and reference works illuminated by the same workshops. This dissertation examines the dissemination of motifs, both among the different texts and within the structure of the individual manuscripts. Based on the codicology, iconography, and historical context of a selected group of manuscripts, this study investigates the working methods of the illuminators and explores the regional developments in book production. Particular attention is given to one of the workshops contributing to the repertory, the Dampierre Group, named for the psalter made for Guy of Dampierre, the Count of Flanders (1280-1305). Analysis of this psalter's physical structure reveals that marginal motifs occur in clusters, so the method proves useful in analyzing other luxury manuscripts. Although marginalia in manuscripts such as the Vulgate Arthur, the Speculum majus by Vincent of Beauvais, and the Trésor by Brunetto Latini, are spread farther apart over the folios, iconographic relationships among these sometimes fanciful additions, the principal miniatures, and the text can be suggested in individual cases. Because illuminators in this region, unlike their contemporaries in Paris and England, applied marginalia to all types of texts, this study enables a broader understanding of the environment in which these manuscripts were produced and read.

Book excerpt: Those who have had the chance to hold a medieval manuscript in their hands cannot fail to have been impressed by the feeling of being in touch with a long-passed epoch. Back when a book was a true handicraft and every copy the result of a laborious process, the object was more a work of art than a volatile commercial product. The Mega Square Illuminated Manuscripts puts the reader in touch with amazing medieval illustrations and unique adornments, which document the imaginative power of their creators.

Book excerpt: "The remarkable and distinctive art of early Netherlandish painters such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden is well known to visitors of art galleries and museums. Yet illuminated manuscripts, rarely seen except by scholars and curators, offer some of the best evidence for our understanding of early Netherlandish painting through a remarkable period of 150 years. Unlike paintings, which have been varnished, cleaned, repainted and exposed to light, the illuminations kept secure within the bindings of a book retain their original colour and clarity of definition."--Book Flap.

Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the Colloquium New Perspectives on Flemish Illuminations constitute an overview of recent research into manuscript illumination in Flanders under the Dukes of Burgundy. In 1959 Leon Delaisse organized the seminal exhibition La miniature flamande. Le mecenat de Philippe le Bon (Flemish Illumination. The Patronage of Philip the Good). Seen in Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris, it was a ground-breaking initiative. In 2014, more than fifty years later, our knowledge of the illuminated manuscript in the Southern Netherlands during the Burgundian period has vastly increased, as revealed in the exhibition Miniatures flamandes 1404-1482 (Flemish Miniatures 1404-1482) held in Brussels and Paris in 2011-2012. The associated Colloquium stimulated sixteen papers, by leading specialists in the field, presented here in six sections. The first is devoted to the context of Flanders in the 15th century with a focus on secular illumination; the second concentrates on individual illuminators: Jan de Tavernier, the Master of the Houghton Miniatures, the Painters of Philip the Good's Alexander and Loyset Liedet; the third considers text, traditions and images; the fourth, on the relationships between illumination and panel painting, is followed by codicological studies developing the topics of artistic Interchange, border decoration and portraits in musical manuscripts. The final section consists of technical studies of grisaille illuminations and methods of flesh painting. Through new research techniques and topics, together with established approaches such as connoisseurship and codicology, the papers advance our understanding of the intentions, processes, chronology and geographic distribution of Flemish manuscript production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a masterful account of Flemish illumination during its height, 1470-1560. Both precious objects and conveyors of serious meaning, the manuscripts considered here range from ecclesiastical texts, romance, and historical chronicles to ancient authors. The authors' collective and most welcome approach discusses manuscript production in terms of producers and consumers, with respect to artistic, political, and historical issues; these include interrelations between painters and illuminators, and collaboration among printer and illuminator, named scribes, and patronage. The illuminated manuscript is thus integrated into the intellectual and artistic contexts of the Renaissance, instead of regarded in isolation. The advent of printing coexisted with illumination for a time and, at least in one case, in the same workshop. Around 1475, printer Colard Mansion produced manuscripts with illuminations as well as printed texts that had spaces designated for such illustrations. Those who commissioned manuscripts and held sizable libraries included aristocrat Philippe de Homes and rulers Philip the Good, Charles the Bold, and Margaret of York.
