We said no more. Foolhardy missions. Life-altering conversations. Gifts—given and received. Loss. Getting lost. Wisdom delivered before dawn and deep into the night. Love and kissing (not necessarily in that order). Laughter. Rides on the edge. Roses. Ghosts. As a traveling poet and visiting teacher, Naomi Shihab Nye has spent a considerable amount of time in cars, both driving and being driven. Her observations, stories, encounters, and escapades—and the kernels of truth she gathers from them—are laugh-out-loud funny, deeply moving, and unforgettable. Buckle up.

Download or read book Triangles of Light written by James Hoggard and published by Wings Press. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conjuring the voice of Edward Hopper, this powerful collection of poetry investigates the mind of an iconic American painter. Lyrical and beautifully crafted, the poems convey both frightening and amusing messages as "Hopper" commentates on his own paintings--from the iconic "Nighthawks" to his depiction of his wife and himself taking a final bow in "Two Comedians"--as well as those of other artists. Shocking in their honesty, these poems also provide a window into the American Modernist period due to their biographical nature and evaluations of the visual arts.

Book excerpt: Jamie's mother dies from an 'accident' just two days after changing her will. Had her husband known of the change would she have died so suddenly? With the reading of the 'Will', Jamie's stepfather learns that his stepdaughter has inherited almost everything. He didn't spend all this time for the fifty-one thousand dollars he was left. With the loss of her mother, Jamie stays in her room to avoid her stepfather. She is naïve as to how to get him out of the home she inherited. She has been content in the past with being her mother's 'secret financial advisor'. She receives her mother's multimillion-dollar Jewelry collection from her lawyer and hides it. Had she known what would befall her, she would have made a different choice. The drugs she is forced to ingest and the beating that follows, leaves her in a comatose state for months. She has undergone many surgeries to allow her to survive and her doctor faithfully watches over her. Her mind has blocked out what occurred. With no memory of the beating she endured, she is only able to see and hear. Trapped in a motionless body, with no way to communicate, she is tormented by her 'husband' Jonathon, who claims she was in a terrible accident. Instinctively she knows she is not married, but how can she tell her doctor? Jamie and her doctor learn to communicate by her blinking yes and no. Through this method he unearths some of the truth. Having learned that Jamie is not, nor ever had been married, her doctor can finally tell her that he is in love with her. He has loved her from the moment she first opened her jade-green eyes. He feels it better to not tell Jonathon just yet. He thinks it might endanger her more. While her doctor is gone Jamie learns of the injuries to her face from Jonathon, he has her believing she is disfigured and that she looks monstrous. It throws her into a panic, and Doctor Ames fights to save her again when her heart starts to fail. Doctor Ames, in an attempt to help Jamie, tells Jonathon that Jamie will never be able to move, write, speak or communicate in any way. Feeling confident that Jamie will never be able to tell anyone, Jonathon taunts her by confessing that he killed not only her mother, but also his father's, previous wives for their fortunes. He tells her it is too bad she hid the Jewelry, and no one will ever find it now. But he will always know where she is and maybe it would be better if he just kills her too, for the insurance money, but not just yet. Jonathon in his evil insane mind would rather she be dead if he can't have her for himself. It is when he kisses her, and she tastes the tears that fall from his eyes and he mentions the Jewelry, that she remembers everything. Her mother's death, the Jewelry, the beating that followed, and the excruciating pain that her mind has blocked out. Jonathon leaves the hospital and doesn't hear Jamie as her heart rate increases and she starts screaming. Having learned what had befallen her, her doctor devises an elaborate plan to get her safely out of the hospital. They must stay out of the reach of the insane man that wants to keep her for himself, even if it means killing her so no one else can have her. They must also escape the man that wants her back, so he can have the Jewelry for himself. The elaborate plan to escape from the hospital and bringing her stepfather and his son to justice, and the love she has found, are what make this novel a page turner.

Book Synopsis In the Shadow of Illness by : Myra Bluebond-Langner
Download or read book In the Shadow of Illness written by Myra Bluebond-Langner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing account of how families adapt to living with a chronically ill child What is it like to live with a child who has a chronic, life-threatening disease? What impact does the illness have on well siblings in the family? Myra Bluebond-Langner suggests that understanding the impact of the illness lies not in identifying deficiencies in the lives of those affected, but in appreciating how family members carry on with their lives in the face of the disease's intrusion. The Private Worlds of Dying Children, Bluebond-Langner's previous book, now considered a classic in the field, explored the world of terminally ill children. In her new book, she turns her attention to the lives of those who live in the shadow of chronic illness: the parents and well siblings of children who have cystic fibrosis. Through a series of narrative portraits, she draws us into the daily lives of nine families of children at different points in the natural history of the illness—from diagnosis through the terminal phase. In these portraits, as family members talk about their experiences in their own words, we see how parents, well siblings, and the ill children themselves struggle, in different ways, to contain the intrusion of the disease into their lives. Bluebond-Langner looks at how parents adjust their priorities and their idea of what constitutes a normal life, how they try to balance the needs of other family members while caring for the ill child, and how they see the future. This context helps us understand how well siblings view the illness and how they relate to their ill sibling and parents. Since the issues raised are not unique to cystic fibrosis but are common to other chronic and life-threatening illnesses, this book will be of interest to all who study, care for, or live with the seriously ill.

Download or read book Buster’S Book written by Donald Junkins and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-11-17 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing insight in a familys history against the backdrop of major world wars, Busters Book offers a collection of more than a thousand letters exchanged during the twentieth century as young men provided service to their country. In this memoir, author Donald Junkins has compiled letters, diaries, interviews, recollections, and photographs of the familys participants in both world wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. This fascinating historical record includes the stories of a variety of escapades: from single-handedly opening an eight-year-old Nazi prison camp; to B-24 air forays from New Guinea in which an aerial gunner shot down two Japanese Zero planes; and to the rescue in Korea of wounded men stalled in a jeep in the middle of a freezing river that culminated in the awarding of the Silver Star. Busters Book reflects both the lives of a middle-class American family during these years and the daily activities of two generations of young American men at war.
