Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The itinerant Neoplatonic scholar Giordano Bruno (1548–1600), one of the most fascinating figures of the Renaissance, was burned at the stake for heresy by the Inquisition in Rome on Ash Wednesday in 1600. The primary evidence against him was the book Spaccio de la bestia trionfante, a daring indictment of the church that abounded in references to classical Greek mythology, Egyptian religion (especially the worship of Isis), Hermeticism, magic, and astrology. The author of more than sixty works on mathematics, science, ethics, philosophy, metaphysics, the art of memory, and esoteric mysticism, Bruno had a profound impact on Western thought.

Book Synopsis Nicolaus Cusanus zwischen Deutschland und Italien by : Martin Thurner
Download or read book Nicolaus Cusanus zwischen Deutschland und Italien written by Martin Thurner and published by De Gruyter Akademie Forschung. This book was released on 2002 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Myth of the Other by : Franco Rella
Download or read book The Myth of the Other written by Franco Rella and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rella came of age as a philosopher in Italy during the period of the "crisis of reason" or more generally the exhaustion of classical rationality in its authority to structure experience. For Rella, unlike many others, the tensions of the crisis are productive. In The Myth of the Other, he presents a unique perspective on four seminal French thinkers: Lacan, Foucault, Deleuze, and Bataille. Moe's masterful translation brings this remarkable Italian thinker to American readers for the first time. This slim book mayvery well change the way American scholars think about the crisis of the other and the self coming our of French poststructuralism.

Book Synopsis The Metaphysics of Being of St. Thomas Aquinas in a Historical Perspective by : Leo J. Elders
Download or read book The Metaphysics of Being of St. Thomas Aquinas in a Historical Perspective written by Leo J. Elders and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysics, formerly the queen of science, fell into oblivion under the onslaught of empiricism and positivism and its very possibllity came to be denied. Professor Elders traces the history of this process and shows how St. Thomas innovated in determining both the subject of metaphysics and the manner in which one enters this science, particularly in the framework of his Aristotle commentaries. The work then considers being and its properties, its divisions into being in act and being in potency, into the act of being essence, and into substance and the accidents. Finally the causes of being are considered. The work also introduces and surveys the extensive literature of Thomas interpretation of the past 50 years.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Philosophy by : Paul J. Glenn
Download or read book An Introduction to Philosophy written by Paul J. Glenn and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Philosophy ought to live up to its name. It should tell the young collegian, and the presumably older non-collegian who takes it up with serious intent, a number of important things. It should answer the questions naturally to be expected of the person who wishes to be introduced,—questions such as these: What is philosophy? How did it come into existence? What interesting things have happened to develop it or to hinder its development? Aeterna Press
