Book Synopsis Balthasar and Anxiety by : John R. Cihak
Download or read book Balthasar and Anxiety written by John R. Cihak and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers a theological response to the problem of anxiety from the point of view of Hans Urs von Balthasar. It is a systematic presentation, analysis and development of Balthasar's original theology of anxiety found in his only work on the subject, Der Christ und die Angst. The study takes a thematic approach based upon the four types of analysis found in Der Christ und die Angst: phenomenological, anthropological, theological and ecclesial. These four approaches to the topic correspond to the phenomenon, origins, redemption and transformation of anxiety. Through this thematic approach, Balthasar's thought is examined in relation to some of the important figures on anxiety. The phenomenon of anxiety is presented in relation to modern psychiatry. The examination of anxiety's origins places him in dialogue with Kierkegaard on anxiety from discursive reasoning and Freud on anxiety from ego-consciousness. The redemption of anxiety places Balthasar in relation to Aquinas in order to clarify Balthasar's interpretation and to show its significance in the theological tradition. The transformation of anxiety places our author in dialogue with Luther on the shape of anxiety in the Christian life. The final chapter begins to unravel the construct of anxiety, with a brief exploration of how it is transformed in the Church according to Balthasar, something he had never explicitly developed. The influence of Bernanos on Balthasar's thought is felt throughout the study. The entire study is framed by the two Gardens wherein transpire the most significant events concerning anxiety for Balthasar: the Garden of Eden and the Garden of Gethsemane.

Book Synopsis To the Heart of the Mystery of Redemption by : Hans Urs von Balthasar
Download or read book To the Heart of the Mystery of Redemption written by Hans Urs von Balthasar and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960's, Fr. Hans Urs von Balthasar gave two conferences in Paris on the subject of redemption. One considered the perspective of Christ the Redeemer. The other gave a view of the redemption from the perspective of Mary and the Church, consenting to the sacrifice of Jesus. These two conferences are what Fr. Jacques Servais, S.J., in his foreword calls "a lantern of the Word," shedding light amidst the advancing turmoil of the postconciliar period. These conferences were later collected by the eminent theologian Henri Cardinal de Lubac, S.J., in a single volume along with an anthology of meditations on the Passion by the mystic Adrienne von Speyr, and selected by von Balthasar. In this new edition, prepared for the centenary of the birth of Hans Urs von Balthasar, Fr. Servais, the director of Casa Balthasar in Rome, provides an extensive postscript illuminating the text along with the original preface by de Lubac.
Book Synopsis The Trinitarian Foundation of Human Sexuality as Revealed by Christ According to Hans Urs Von Balthasar by : Robert A. Pesarchick
Download or read book The Trinitarian Foundation of Human Sexuality as Revealed by Christ According to Hans Urs Von Balthasar written by Robert A. Pesarchick and published by Gregorian Biblical BookShop. This book was released on 2000 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the conviction of the Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988) that the reservation of priestly ordination to men is intrinsically connected to the significance of the incarnation of Christ as a male. Von Balthasar was convinced that the incarnation of the eternal Son as male plays an intrinsic role in his economic mission. The present study is an attempt to understand the teaching of the Magisterium reserving priestly ordination to men by an exposition and analysis of the revelatory significance of the incarnation of Christ as male, and the relation of his maleness to priestly ordination according to the theology of von Balthasar.

Biblical experts examine the scriptural roots of trinitarian doctrine, patristic scholars correct those who continue to misinterpret the trinitarian teaching of the Cappadocians and Augustine, and five scholars examine systematic and foundational issues like the viability of social models for the Trinity. The volume ends with a study of the Trinity in art and the challenge of preaching the Trinity today. The international reputation of the participants reflects and guarantees the high quality of this joint work.

Book Synopsis The Achievement of Hans Urs von Balthasar by : Levering
Download or read book The Achievement of Hans Urs von Balthasar written by Levering and published by Catholic University of America Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Achievement of Hans Urs von Balthasar, Matthew Levering has written a book for theologically educated readers who mistrust von Balthasar or who mistrust von Balthasar’s critics. The book shows that von Balthasar’s critics can and should benefit both from the rich and wide-ranging conversations that mark his trilogy and from the critical and constructive engagement with German philosophical modernity offered by the trilogy. In addition, Levering hopes to show that those who mistrust von Balthasar’s critics need to be more Balthasarian in their response to criticisms of the Swiss theologian.

Book Synopsis The Threefold Garland by : Hans Urs von Balthasar
Download or read book The Threefold Garland written by Hans Urs von Balthasar and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÊThe renowned Swiss theologian offers in this little book very beautiful and practical reflections for praying and living the 15 mysteries of the Rosary. He makes the profound truths and events of our salvation take on a freshness and splendor by allowing the reader to enter his own contemplation of the mysteries. Von Balthasar's theology is a theology that does not read like theology, but one that derives from prayer and leads back to prayer. Contemplating each of the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries, with his focus on Jesus' giving himself for us - and Mary's part in it - Von BlathasarÊ leads the reader to see that "Christian prayer can attain to God only along the path God himself has trod" - a God who not only addresses his Word to us, but makes it live among us. Von Balthasar says his meditations are designed to "free the prayer of the Rosary from a certain narrowness, alien to Mary's own spirit and easily leading to monotony, and to nourish it . . . with the fullness of God's saving thoughts and saving deeds for the world."
