Le intuizioni sono cose sfuggevoli che tendono a svanire se le si guarda troppo da vicino. E indubbiamente c'è il rischio che troppa conoscenza ed esercizio possano soppiantare l'istinto naturale dello studente, lasciando al suo posto solo la fredda conoscenza dei mezzi d'espressione. Poiché l'artista, se ha la stoffa, nel fare il suo migliore lavoro ha la consapevolezza di qualcosa, come disse Ruskin, "non in lui ma attraverso di lui". È stato, per così dire, nient'altro che l'agente attraverso il quale essa ha trovato espressione. Il Talento può essere descritto come "ciò che possediamo", e il Genio come "ciò che ci possiede". Ora, sebbene possiamo avere un minimo controllo su questo potere che "ci possiede", e sebbene ci si possa anche abbandonare senza indugio alla sua influenza, non vi è dubbio che è compito dell'artista assicurarsi che il suo talento venga sviluppato, che si riveli uno strumento adatto all'espressione di qualsiasi cosa gli venga chiesto di esprimere; allo stesso tempo deve essere lasciata al suo carattere individuale la decisione di quanto sia opportuno perseguire qualsiasi analisi intellettiva delle cose sfuggevoli che sono la vera sostanza dell'arte. Ammesso che lo studente si renda conto di tutto ciò, e del fatto che l'allenamento artistico può avere a che fare soltanto con il perfezionamento di un mezzo d'espressione e che la vera sostanza dell'arte si trova al di sopra di questo e va al di là della portata dell'insegnamento, lo studente non può averne troppo. Poiché nonostante egli debba sempre rimanere un bambino di fronte all'influenza che lo anima, tuttavia se non è con la conoscenza dell'uomo adulto che si toglie la giacca e si avvicina all'arte della pittura o del disegno, sarà ben poco preparato per farne un mezzo per trasmettere agli altri nella forma adeguata le cose che desidererà esprimere. Nell'arte le cose più belle si possono fare soltanto quando l'istinto creativo dell'artista ha a sua disposizione una capacità esecutiva ben organizzata. Delle due parti in cui lo studio tecnico della pittura si può dividere, ovvero la Forma e il Colore, in questo libro ci occuperemo solo della Forma. Buona lettura!
