Book Synopsis Rome and The Guidebook Tradition by : Anna Blennow
Download or read book Rome and The Guidebook Tradition written by Anna Blennow and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To this day, no comprehensive academic study of the development of guidebooks to Rome over time has been performed. This book treats the history of guidebooks to Rome from the Middle Ages up to the early twentieth century. It is based on the results of the interdisciplinary research project Topos and Topography, led by Anna Blennow and Stefano Fogelberg Rota. From the case studies performed within the project, it becomes evident that the guidebook as a phenomenon was formed in Rome during the later Middle Ages and early Renaissance. The elements and rhetorical strategies of guidebooks over time have shown to be surprisingly uniform, with three important points of development: a turn towards a more user-friendly structure from the seventeenth century and onward; the so-called ’Baedeker effect’ in the mid-nineteenth century; and the introduction of a personalized guiding voice in the first half of the twentieth century. Thus, the ‘guidebook tradition’ is an unusually consistent literary oeuvre, which also forms a warranty for the authority of every new guidebook. In this respect, the guidebook tradition is intimately associated with the city of Rome, with which it shares a constantly renovating yet eternally fixed nature.
Book Synopsis War, Communication, and the Politics of Culture in Early Modern Venice by : Anastasia Stouraiti
Download or read book War, Communication, and the Politics of Culture in Early Modern Venice written by Anastasia Stouraiti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving together cultural history and critical imperial studies, this book shows how war and colonial expansion shaped seventeenth-century Venetian culture and society. Anastasia Stouraiti tests conventional assumptions about republicanism, commercial peace and cross-cultural exchange and offers a novel approach to the study of the Republic of Venice. Her extensive research brings the history of communication in dialogue with conquest and empire-building in the Mediterranean to provide an original interpretation of the politics of knowledge in wartime Venice. The book argues that the Venetian-Ottoman War of the Morea (1684-1699) was mediated through a diverse range of cultural mechanisms of patrician elite domination that orchestrated the production of popular consent. It sheds new light on the militarisation of the Venetian public sphere and exposes the connections between bellicose foreign policies and domestic power politics in a state celebrated as the most serene republic of merchants.
Book Synopsis La città di Bramante by : Sandro Rossi
Download or read book La città di Bramante written by Sandro Rossi and published by LetteraVentidue Edizioni. This book was released on with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Art as Politics in Late Medieval and Renaissance Siena by : TimothyB. Smith
Download or read book Art as Politics in Late Medieval and Renaissance Siena written by TimothyB. Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Art as Politics in Late Medieval and Renaissance Siena, contributors explore the evolving relationship between image and politics in Siena from the time of the city-state's defeat of Florence at the Battle of Montaperti in 1260 to the end of the Sienese Republic in 1550. Engaging issues of the politicization of art in Sienese painting, sculpture, architecture, and urban design, the volume challenges the still-prevalent myth of Siena's cultural and artistic conservatism after the mid fourteenth century. Clearly establishing uniquely Sienese artistic agendas and vocabulary, these essays broaden our understanding of the intersection of art, politics, and religion in Siena by revisiting its medieval origins and exploring its continuing role in the Renaissance.
Book Synopsis Becoming Neapolitan by : John A. Marino
Download or read book Becoming Neapolitan written by John A. Marino and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-01-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2011 Winner of the Phyllis Goodhart Gordan Book Prize of the Renaissance Society of America Naples in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries managed to maintain a distinct social character while under Spanish rule. John A. Marino's study explores how the population of the city of Naples constructed their identity in the face of Spanish domination. As Western Europe’s largest city, early modern Naples was a world unto itself. Its politics were decentralized and its neighborhoods diverse. Clergy, nobles, and commoners struggled to assert political and cultural power. Looking at these three groups, Marino unravels their complex interplay to show how such civic rituals as parades and festival days fostered a unified Neapolitan identity through the assimilation of Aragonese customs, Burgundian models, and Spanish governance. He discusses why the relationship between mythical and religious representations in ritual practices allowed Naples's inhabitants to identify themselves as citizens of an illustrious and powerful sovereignty and explains how this semblance of stability and harmony hid the city's political, cultural, and social fissures. In the process, Marino finds that being and becoming Neapolitan meant manipulating the city's rituals until their original content and meaning were lost. The consequent widening of divisions between rich and poor led Naples's vying castes to turn on one another as the Spanish monarchy weakened. Rich in source material and tightly integrated, this nuanced, synthetic overview of the disciplining of ritual life in early modern Naples digs deep into the construction of Neapolitan identity. Scholars of early modern Italy and of Italian and European history in general will find much to ponder in Marino's keen insights and compelling arguments.
Book Synopsis Mediterranean Urbanism by : Besim S. Hakim
Download or read book Mediterranean Urbanism written by Besim S. Hakim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together historic urban / building rules and codes for the geographic areas including Greece, Italy and Spain. The author achieved his ambitious goal of finding pertinent rules and codes that were followed in previous societies for the processes that formed the built environment of their towns and cities, including building activities at the neighborhood level and the decision-making process that took place between proximate neighbors. The original languages of the texts that were translated into English are Greek, Latin, Italian, Arabic and Spanish. The sources for the chapter on Greece date from the 2nd century B.C.E. to the 19th century C.E. Those for the chapter on Italy date from the 10th to the 14th centuries C.E. and for the chapter on Spain from the 5th to the 18th centuries C.E. Numerous appendices are included to enhance and elaborate on the material that make up the chapters. This book provides lessons and insights into how compact and sustainable towns and cities that are greatly admired today were achieved in the past and how we and future generations can learn from this rich heritage, including the valuable insight provided by the nature of the rules and codes and their application through centuries of continuous use.

[ANTONIA P. RECCHIA – Direttore Generale, Direzione Generale per il paesaggio, le belle arti, l’architettura e l’arte contemporanee, MiBAC] The project “Progettare Paesaggio, Landscape as Architecture” combines the inspiring design proposals drafted by a group of students of the Harvard Graduate School of Design headed by the teacher Paola Cannavò with a study of the portuense and ostiense areas and how the landscape might change due to the construction of new infrastructure, either being completed or in the design stage. The study includes guidelines for the requalification and enhancement of the area considered as a complex historical landscape; it also highlights the past and present active and dynamic protection measures and procedures adopted by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. [CHARLES WALDHEIM – Direttore, Dipartimento di Architettura del Paesaggio, Harvard Graduate School of Design] “This publication, and the design research that it documents, offers timely evidence of the contemporary challenges of urban form, ecological process, and economic development faced by the Italian capital.” “Highlighting the complex and contradictory ecological and economic impulses of a working port landscape, Cannavò proposes a renewed relevance for landscape architecture as a medium of urbanism. In so doing, she stakes an Italian position in the contemporary discourses of landscape urbanism and ecological urbanism, while pointing to a way forward for urbanism, even in the fields of Fuimicino.” [CHARLES WALDHEIM – Chair, Department of Landscape Architecture, Harvard Graduate School of Design]
