Book excerpt: AN INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER SHORTLISTED FOR THE GORDON BURN PRIZE LONGLISTED FOR SCOTLAND'S NATIONAL BOOK AWARD A GUARDIAN BEST MEMOIR OF 2023 A WATERSTONES BEST BOOK OF 2023 John Niven’s little brother Gary was fearless, popular, stubborn, handsome, hilarious and sometimes terrifying. After years of chaotic struggle against the world took his own life at the age of 42. Tracking the lives of two brothers in changing times – from illicit cans of lager in 70s sitting rooms to ecstasy in 90s raves – O Brother is a tender, affecting and often uproariously funny story. It is about the bonds of family and how we try to keep the best of those we lose alive. It is about black sheep and what it takes to break the ties that bind. Fundamentally it is about how families survive suicide, ‘that last cry, from the saddest outpost.’

Book excerpt: Most people at one time or another have probably been curious to know, "What could account for all of those strange objects in the sky that many credible witnesses see?" Or, what about the modern mystery of alien abductions and stories of visitations by beings claiming to be from other planets or star systems? Are aliens really making contact with human beings? Is it important anyway? At last, an easy-to-understand book traces the history of this strange phenomenon utilizing the research of many of the "heavyweights" of UFOlogy -- and it's been making sense to a lot of people. This is a book for everyone. The author's research and conclusions will surprise you and challenge your thinking, not just about UFOs, but about the nature of life itself. This is a landmark volume that brings together the most important evidences, coming to conclusions far more sinister -- yet profound -- than most could imagine. - Publisher.

Since his untimely death in 2002 Joe Strummer has been mourned as a rock'n'roll icon. The enormous sense of loss felt at his death reinforced the importance of The Clash. As time goes by the band just seem to grow in terms of influence and impact; they changed the shape of music and established a benchmark for how exciting a rock band can be. In Joe Strummer and the Legend of The Clash, author and journalist Kris Needs tells the story of The Clash with a special focus on Joe Strummer - his life history, his personal passions and his politics. Kris Needs combines his own anecdotes and press reports, plus exclusive interviews with Joe's closest friends, who include Mick Jones, his songwriting partner in The Clash and Don Letts the punk filmmaker, to breathe life into the legend that was Joe Strummer and The Clash. As a young journalist on tour with all of punk's biggest names, Kris forged life-long friendships with all the scene's key figures, while witnessing their unbelievable exploits first-hand. One of the first journalists to see The Clash live, Kris championed the band from the start, becoming close friends with Joe Strummer and the rest of the group, accompanying them on many major tours, and being present at pivotal moments in their career. Weaving in his own material from the era, with a wealth of biographical detail, Needs illuminates Joe's story with accounts of life-changing gigs, on-the-road antics and the recording sessions that produced classic music. Needs looks at Joe's motivations and passions, by drawing on his own experiences with him throughout their friendship, providing an insight into the beliefs and ideals that resonate in The Clash's music. Joe Strummer and the Legend of The Clash conveys the white-hot excitement of their gigs and the intense emotions their music caused, while providing an account of the life and times of Joe Strummer, a true punk pioneer.

Book excerpt: These are the guitars so famous that their names are often household words: B. B. King's Lucille, Eric Clapton's Blackie, Stevie Ray Vaughan's First Wife, Billy F Gibbons' Pearly Gates, Neil Young's Old Black, and many more. Here's the first-ever illustrated history of the actual guitars of the stars that made the music. Other best-selling guitar histories look at the rank-and-file models, but this book is unique in profiling the actual "star guitars"--the million-dollar babies, such as the 1968 Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix burned at Woodstock, which sold at Sotheby's auction house in 1993 for $1,300,000. Amateurs buy guitars to emulate the stars--Clapton's Strat, Slash's Les Paul--and this book explains the stars' modifications, thus showing how others can recreate those famous tones.

Book excerpt: “Giulliver’s travels - Berlin” is the first of a series of booklets-portraits of cities I have lived in, featuring short poetic stories and photos. The short stories describe friends, acquaintances and even strangers with whom I have shared some time or even just an instant. I tell about small random “poetic-deeds”, compositions of moments, caught in their fleeting beauty, ephemeral randomness. The photographs are portraying small details found in each location, often presenting themselves as ironic, melancholic and extravagant symbols. These photos are presented both in an harmonic and contrasting dialogue. One could say that the short stories are in fact photographs of the characters and that the photographs are describing the places they inhabit. The short stories’ style is dry, direct, sarcastic, melancholic and immaginative. My photography is essential, clean, aiming at the subjects and aware of their settings. Out of the series, “North-East”, “Milano” and “London” are currently in production. I have started with Berlin because there I have spent the last two years of my life, both beautiful and intese. It was this experience that pushed me towards giving words and images to my stories and giving shape to the “Giulliver’s travels” series. This is the first of a booklet series I called “Giulliver’s travels” and they are part of “poetic-actions products” - www.giulliver.com, a multifaceted artistic endeavour I have been developing since 2010 Giulia Ruffatti AKA Giulliver
