Book Synopsis Librarianship by : Rosario Gassol de Horowitz
Download or read book Librarianship written by Rosario Gassol de Horowitz and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1988 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the problems that Third World countries face is the need to integrate education--especially programs that promote basic literacy--into the development process. Part of the challenge is to create programs in library and information studies that are not wholly derived from First World institutions and ideologies but spring from the needs of the very different societies they are intended to serve. In this book, Horowitz offers the first detailed assessment of the role of librarianship in a nation struggling to overcome underdevelopment. Through her systematic rethinking of the conceptual basis of library and information studies, she provides a practical synthesis that reconciles opposing views and establishes the validity of Third World perspectives in their own right.

Book Synopsis Coercive Distribution by : Michael Albertus
Download or read book Coercive Distribution written by Michael Albertus and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canonical theories of political economy struggle to explain patterns of distribution in authoritarian regimes. In this Element, Albertus, Fenner, and Slater challenge existing models and introduce an alternative, supply-side, and state-centered theory of 'coercive distribution'. Authoritarian regimes proactively deploy distributive policies as advantageous strategies to consolidate their monopoly on power. These policies contribute to authoritarian durability by undercutting rival elites and enmeshing the masses in lasting relations of coercive dependence. The authors illustrate the patterns, timing, and breadth of coercive distribution with global and Latin American quantitative evidence and with a series of historical case studies from regimes in Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. By recognizing distribution's coercive dimensions, they account for empirical patterns of distribution that do not fit with quasi-democratic understandings of distribution as quid pro quo exchange. Under authoritarian conditions, distribution is less an alternative to coercion than one of its most effective expressions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue of Sustainability on "Partnerships for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" brings together a collection of articles that explore a diverse range of issues and challenges faced by partnership arrangements that seek to support the achievement of the SDGs and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As well as encompassing a diverse range of collaborative forms and themes, and involving a variety of stakeholders, these collaborative initiatives are all notably shaped by the dynamics of the particular contexts in which they operate. These contexts include individual, organizational, sectoral, spatial, and geographical settings. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on partnering for the SDGs is also apparent. The interplay between these elements offers a useful global-local context for further inquiry and reflection on how deeper and more meaningful collaborative relationships might be developed to achieve the SDG targets and beyond
