Book excerpt: Just about 1625 years ago, during the Roman Emperor Flavius Theodosius Augustus, or Theodosius the Great, the Roman general Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus, around 394, wrote in Latin the book "Epitoma Rei Militaris" or "De re militari" (Concerning Military Matters), in which he mentions "Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum", later simplified as "Si vis pacem, para bellum", which means "If you want peace, prepare for war".Well, after over 1625 years of wars after wars after wars, the over 7.7 billions of people on Earth demand a change: Si vis pacem, para PACEM! No need to translate, but if you insist: If you want peace, prepare for PEACE!On 24 November 2019 Pope Francis called for a 'world without nuclear weapons' during his Nagasaki visit.Using a lovely imaginary dialog between Sun and Earth, this book is exactly what we need to really prepare for peace, with clear and practical ideas, which will help the over 7.7 B people to have a Harmonious World, with Sustainable Peace, Freedom, Health, Friendship and Prosperity.

Book excerpt: "This monograph examines the fundamental argument that America's adversaries are shifting more toward irregular methods due to the demonstrated prowess of the U.S. military at conventional warfare. This argument is based on what one might call a paradoxical logic, not unlike that described by Edward Luttwak in his classic work, Strategy. Among other things, the monograph concludes that few genuine paradoxes exist in war; most principles that appear paradoxical are completely linear. Moreover, those adversarial states and nonstate actors employing irregular methods today were doing so long before the U.S. military demonstrated its superiority at conventional warfare, and will likely continue to do so." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. military forces have participated in an increasingly complex array of military operations, from disaster relief and peacekeeping to deadly combat. The unique nature of many of these missions calls into question what it means to be a soldier and may require adjustments not only in military doctrine, but also in the military's combat-oriented warrior identity. Franke examines the extent to which individuals who will lead U.S. forces in the 21st century are prepared cognitively to shift among mission requirements. Using survey methods, Franke explores the social, political, and professional attitudes and values of cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. By comparing cadets' responses across classes, he assesses the effects of military socialization on their commitment to the military's dual-mission purpose and their cognitive preparation for combat and non-combat assignments. By developing a dynamic model of social identity, Franke extends the applicability of social identity theory from the experimental laboratory environment to a genuine social field setting. Assessing the dynamic relationship between identity, values, and attitudes for identifications that are normatively meaningful to respondents, he illustrates the importance of individuals' identification with social groups for their behavioral choices.

Book excerpt: Terrorism: Commentary on Security Documents is a series that provides primary source documents and expert commentary on various topics in the worldwide effort to combat terrorism. Among the documents collected are transcripts of Congressional testimony, reports by such federal government bodies as the Congressional Research Service (CRS) and the Government Accountability Office (GAO), United Nations Security Council resolutions, reports and investigations by the United Nations Secretary-General and other dedicated UN bodies, and case law from the U.S. and around the globe covering issues related to terrorism. Most volumes carry a single theme, and inside each volume the documents appear within topic-based categories. The series also includes a subject index and other indices that guide the user through this complex area of the law. Volume 127, The Changing Nature of War, tackles how the approach to training for and fighting wars and readying national security is likely to evolve as the United States moves further into the 21st Century. Professor Douglas Lovelace, Jr. has organized and provided framing and illustrative commentary on Congressional Research Service reports, Presidential policy statements, Department of Defense strategy papers, and research reports from the U.S. Army War College's Strategic Studies Institute on contemporary national security topics as: United States war planning; the inter-related policy and force-related concerns of shifting from counterinsurgency-based efforts abroad to a focus on counterterrorism both domestically and abroad; transnational organized crime, with particular emphasis on the Mexican drug cartels operating along the U.S.-Mexico border; and the ever-expanding national security and private economic ramifications of cyberwarfare.

Book excerpt: It's crucial to emphasize that the following list is purely hypothetical and should not be construed as an endorsement or encouragement of preparing for war. The ideal scenario is always to strive for peace, diplomacy, and conflict resolution through dialogue and cooperation among nations. However, acknowledging historical realities and potential global risks, here are some considerations one might hypothetically contemplate in the context of preparing for a world war. This list is offered with the hope that humanity will continue to prioritize peace, understanding, and mutual respect among nations and peoples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once in a great while, a book is written that substantially changes the way people think about a particular subject. Will War Ever End? is such a book. Written as a “manifesto for waging peace” by an active duty captain in the US Army, Will War Ever End? challenges readers to think about peace, war and violence in radically new ways. “Are human beings naturally violent?” “What is hatred?” “How can love overcome the power of hatred?” “How does nonviolence overcome the power of violence?” “How can we prove that unconditional love makes us psychologically healthy and that hatred, just like an illness, occurs when something has gone wrong?” “How does violence against the natural world relate to violence between human beings?” These are all questions that Captain Paul K. Chappell leads us to consider in a strikingly new way. In Will War Ever End?, Chappell demonstrates that human beings are naturally peaceful and that world peace can become more than a cliché. He lays out a practical framework for transforming the way we think about war and violence, enabling us to begin the real work we must do in order to achieve true peace for mankind. Will War Ever End? is a deeply personal story of a soldier’s search for human understanding that will lead to universal transformation. Its message is one of hope, offering practical solutions to help us build a better world. We can all make change. Now is the time to begin.

Book excerpt: Sun Tzu, author of 'The Art of War', believed that the acme of leadership consists in figuring out how to subdue the enemy with the least amount of fighting?a fact that America's Founders also understood, and practiced with astonishing success. For it to work, however, a people must possess both the ability and the willingness to use all available instruments of power in peace as much as in war. US foreign policy has increasingly neglected the instruments of civilian power and become overly dependent on lethal solutions to conflict. The steep rise in unconventional conflict has increased the need for diplomatic and other non-hard power tools of statecraft. The United States can no longer afford to sit on the proverbial three-legged national security stool ("military, diplomacy, development"), where one leg is a lot longer than either of the other two, almost forgetting altogether the fourth leg?information, especially strategic communication and public diplomacy. The United States isn't so much becoming militarized as DE civilianized. According to Sun Tzu, self-knowledge is as important as knowledge of one's enemy: "if you know neither yourself nor the enemy, you will succumb in every battle." Alarmingly, the United States is deficient on both counts. And though we can stand to lose a few battles, the stakes of losing the war itself in this age of nuclear proliferation are too high to contemplate.
