Book excerpt: The ten research papers presented at the June 1999 workshop belong to one of four topics: three-dimensional shape recovery, calibration and structure from motion, image-based modeling using photometry, and image-based modeling of dynamic scenes. Among the paper titles are the impact of dense range data on computer graphics, gauge invariance in projective 3D reconstruction, illumination-based image synthesis under novel viewing conditions, and the synthesis and recognition of biological motion patterns based on linear superposition of prototypical motion sequences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains the proceedings of the 8th Eurographics Rendering Workshop, which took place from 16th to 18th June, 1997, in Saint Etienne, France. After a series of seven successful events the workshop is now well established as the major international forum in the field of rendering and illumination techniques. It brought together the experts of this field. Their recent research results are compiled in this proceedings together with many color images that demonstrate new ideas and techniques. This year we received a total of 63 submissions of which 28 were selected for the workshop after a period of careful reviewing and evaluation by the 27 mem bers of the international program committee. The quality of the submissions was again very high and, unfortunately, many interesting papers had to be rejected. In addition to regular papers the program also contains two invited lectures by Shenchang Eric Chen (Live Picture) and Per Christensen (Mental Images). The papers in this proceedings contain new research results in the areas of Finite-Element and Monte-Carlo illumination algorithms, image-based render ing, outdoor and natural illumination, error metrics, perception, texture and color handling, data acquisition for rendering, and efficient use of hardware. While some contributions report results from more efficient or elegant algo rithms, others pursue new and experimental approaches to find better solutions to the open problems in rendering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image-based rendering, as an area of overlap between computer graphics and computer vision, uses computer vision techniques to aid in sythesizing new views of scenes. Image-based rendering methods are having a substantial impact on the field of computer graphics, and also play an important role in the related field of multimedia systems, for applications such as teleconferencing, remote instruction and surgery, virtual reality and entertainment. The book develops a novel way of formalizing the view synthesis problem under the full perspective model, yielding a clean, linear warping equation. It shows new techniques for dealing with visibility issues such as partial occlusion and "holes". Furthermore, the author thoroughly re-evaluates the requirements that view synthesis places on stereo algorithms and introduces two novel stereo algorithms specifically tailored to the application of view synthesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital image sequences (including digital video) are increasingly common and important components in technical applications ranging from medical imaging and multimedia communications to autonomous vehicle navigation. The immense popularity of DVD video and the introduction of digital television make digital video ubiquitous in the consumer domain. Digital Image Sequence Processing, Compression, and Analysis provides an overview of the current state of the field, as analyzed by leading researchers. An invaluable resource for planning and conducting research in this area, the book conveys a unified view of potential directions for further industrial development. It offers an in-depth treatment of the latest perspectives on processing, compression, and analysis of digital image sequences. Research involving digital image sequences remains extremely active. The advent of economical sequence acquisition, storage, and display devices, together with the availability of computing power, opens new areas of opportunity. This volume delivers the background necessary to understand the strengths and weaknesses of current techniques and the directions that consumer and technical applications may take over the coming decade.

Book excerpt: Accurate Visual Metrology from Single and Multiple Uncalibrated Images presents novel techniques for constructing three-dimensional models from bi-dimensional images using virtual reality tools. Antonio Criminisi develops the mathematical theory of computing world measurements from single images, and builds up a hierarchy of novel, flexible techniques to make measurements and reconstruct three-dimensional scenes from uncalibrated images, paying particular attention to the accuracy of the reconstruction. This book includes examples of interesting viable applications (eg. Forensic Science, History of Art, Virtual Reality, Architectural and indoor measurements), presented in a simple way, accompanied by pictures, diagrams and plenty of worked examples to help the reader understand and implement the algorithms.

Book excerpt: Ten years ago, the inaugural European Conference on Computer Vision was held in Antibes, France. Since then, ECCV has been held biennially under the auspices of the European Vision Society at venues around Europe. This year, the privilege of organizing ECCV 2000 falls to Ireland and it is a signal honour for us to host what has become one of the most important events in the calendar of the computer vision community. ECCV is a single-track conference comprising the highest quality, previously unpublished, contributed papers on new and original research in computer vision. This year, 266 papers were submitted and, following a rigorous double-blind review process, with each paper being reviewed by three referees, 116 papers were selected by the Programme Committee for presentation at the conference. The venue for ECCV 2000 is the University of Dublin, Trinity College. - unded in 1592, it is Ireland’s oldest university and has a proud tradition of scholarship in the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences, alike. The Trinity campus, set in the heart of Dublin, is an oasis of tranquility and its beautiful squares, elegant buildings, and tree-lined playing- elds provide the perfect setting for any conference.
