In fact, a thorough, up-to-date treatment of the subject hasn’t been published in years, yet deregulation and technical changes have increased the need for better information. Filling this void, the Electric Power Distribution Handbook delivers comprehensive, cutting-edge coverage of the electrical aspects of power distribution systems. The first few chapters of this pragmatic guidebook focus on equipment-oriented information and applications such as choosing transformer connections, sizing and placing capacitors, and setting regulators. The middle portion discusses reliability and power quality, while the end tackles lightning protection, grounding, and safety. The Second Edition of this CHOICE Award winner features: 1 new chapter on overhead line performance and 14 fully revised chapters incorporating updates from several EPRI projects New sections on voltage optimization, arc flash, and contact voltage Full-color illustrations throughout, plus fresh bibliographic references, tables, graphs, methods, and statistics Updates on conductor burndown, fault location, reliability programs, tree contacts, automation, and grounding and personnel protection Access to an author-maintained support website, distributionhandbook.com, with problems sets, resources, and online apps An unparalleled source of tips and solutions for improving performance, the Electric Power Distribution Handbook, Second Edition provides power and utility engineers with the technical information and practical tools they need to understand the applied science of distribution.

This book was released on 2022-11-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents novel contributions in the development of solid-state-transformer (SST) technology both for medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) utility grid interfaces, which can potentially augment the grid modernization process in the evolving power system paradigm. For the MV interface, a single-stage AC-DC SST submodule topology has been proposed, and its modulation and soft-switching possibilities are analysed, experimentally validated and adequately benchmarked. A control scheme with power balance capability among submodules is developed for MV grid-connected single-stage AC-DC SST for smooth operation under inevitable parameter drift scenario, and experimental validation shows excellent performance under drastic load change conditions. A novel machine learning-aided multi-objective design optimization framework for grid-connected SST is developed and experimentally validated, which equips a power electronics design engineer with meagre computational resources to find out the most optimal SST design in a convenient time-frame. This book has also contributed towards the development of dual-active-bridge (DAB)-type and non-DAB-type LV grid-interfaced isolated AC-DC converters by providing solutions to specific topology and modulation-related shortcomings in these two types of topologies. A comprehensive comparison of the DAB and non-DAB-type LVAC-LVDC converters reveals the superiority of DAB-type conversion strategy.

Book excerpt: Whilst financial rights have appeared as a successful ingredient in North-American power markets, they have their shortcomings both theoretically and in practice. Financial Transmission Rights: Analysis, Experiences and Prospects present a systematic and comprehensive overview of financial transmission rights (FTRS). Following a general introduction to FTRs, including chapters to explain transmission pricing and the general properties of FTRS, experts in the field provide discussions on wide scope of topics. These include: Varying perspectives on FTRS: from electrical engineers to economists, Different mathematical formulations of FTRS Financial Hedging using FTRS, and Alternative solutions to FTRs The detail, expertise and range of content makes Financial Transmission Rights: Analysis, Experiences and Prospect an essential resource for electricity market specialists both at academic and professional levels. “This is THE BOOK we were all expecting to address all key ‘Financial Transmission Rights’ issues. It is comprehensive and reader friendly. You can pick at will in its menu: more or less theory, a bit of maths or none, empirical review of real cases or numerical simulations of many feasible options. Big names rally there to delight you like: Hogan , Oren, Perez-Arriaga, Smeers, Hobbs and... Rosellón. More than a must read: a light house, a map and a survival kit.” Jean – Michel Glachant, Director Florence School, Holder Loyola de Palacio Chair, Chief-editor Economics of Energy & Environmental Policy. "In the last two decades, economists have developed a better understanding of the impact of financial rights on risk management, market power and network expansion in electricity markets, while power systems have experimented with such rights. Striking a good balance between academics and practitioners, always at the frontier of the field, written by the best experts, this volume is essential reading for all those- power systems’ managers and users, regulators, students and researchers- who want to understand the new electricity environment and predict its evolution." Book excerpt: This textbook is appropriate for use in graduate-level curricula in analog to digital conversion, as well as for practicing engineers in need of a state-of-the-art reference on data converters. It discusses various analog-to-digital conversion principles, including sampling, quantization, reference generation, nyquist architectures and sigma-delta modulation. This book presents an overview of the state-of-the-art in this field and focuses on issues of optimizing accuracy and speed, while reducing the power level. This new, second edition emphasizes novel calibration concepts, the specific requirements of new systems, the consequences of 22-nm technology and the need for a more statistical approach to accuracy. Pedagogical enhancements to this edition include more than twice the exercises available in the first edition, solved examples to introduce all key, new concepts and warnings, remarks and hints, from a practitioner’s perspective, wherever appropriate. Considerable background information and practical tips, from designing a PCB, to lay-out aspects, to trade-offs on system level, complement the discussion of basic principles, making this book a valuable reference for the experienced engineer.

Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to introduce a non-stationary model for the scattering in mobile-to-mobile channels. Due to the evolution of wireless technology, fixed-to-mobile communications systems are nowadays complemented by mobile-to-mobile communications systems. In the vehicular sector, mobile-to-mobile communications systems are used to enable intelligent transportation systems. Such systems aim to make transportation safer and more efficient by distributing sensor information among the cars. In the aeronautical sector, mobile-to-mobile communications systems will be used, for example, to exchange position, altitude, speed, and heading data between aircraft during flight thus allowing for a reduced separation between them. Hence, these systems are necessary to further increase the air traffic density.

Book excerpt: System safety is a widely accepted management and engineering approach to analyze and address risks in complex systems in order to prevent accidents. Because software and computing systems are integral to most systems, software safety has become a critical component of an overall system safety effort. Software and System Safety discusses critical elements of the discipline of system safety and shows how software and computing systems fit in the system safety process. Software-specific aspects of the system safety process are addressed to show concerns common to complex systems. The many accidents and incidents presented in this book illustrate important lessons learned and show how software-related hazards can be misidentified, software risks can be improperly assessed, hazard controls may be misapplied, and software and system testing may not effectively verify that the risk had been reduced. The lessons learned come from a variety of industries and organizations, and include the author’s personal experience. The real-world lessons provided in this book can be used to improve existing software safety and system safety efforts, and can help when planning new system safety programs.
