Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Father James Schall, the well- known author and professor of philosophy at Georgetown University, inquires about the various orders found in the cosmos, the human mind, the human body, the city, and he seeks to reflect upon the unity of these orders. In a world in which the presence of reason and order are denied presumably in the name of science in favor of chance explanations of why things are as they are, it is surprising to find that, in the various realms open to the human intellect, we find a persistent order revealed. At first sight, it may seem that this reality can be explained by chance occurrence, but after a point, there is a growing sense that behind things there is, in fact, an order. This order can be traced in the many areas that are open to the human mind. As Aquinas has noted, the order within the cosmos points to an order outside of it, since the cosmos cannot be the cause of its own internal order. Philosophers have long inquired about the curious fact that the order of things implies not a mere relationship of one thing to another, but a hint that the universe is created with a certain superabundance. Why is the universe, and the things within it, not only ordered but, ordered with a sense of beauty? Not only is there an order in things, but also the human mind seems attuned to this order as something it delights in discovering. This relationship implies that there is some correspondence between mind and reality. What is the relationship between the mind and reality? The Order of Things explores this question. Relying on common sense and the experience available to everyone, Schall concludes that it requires more credulity to disbelieve in order than to experience it. Finally, Schall explores the fundamental cause of order, what it is like? Having looked at the order of the created universe, it is not surprising that the revelation of the Godhead is itself ordered in terms of an inner relationship of Persons.

Download or read book Idyll Banter written by Chris Bohjalian and published by Crown. This book was released on 2005-05-24 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Years ago, Chris Bohjalian and his wife traded their Brooklyn co-op for a century-old Victorian house in Lincoln, Vermont (population 975). Bohjalian, a bestselling novelist, began chronicling life in that gloriously quirky little village with a wide variety of magazine essays and his newspaper column, “Idyll Banter.” These pieces, written over the course of twelve years, are honest, funny, and deeply affecting reflections on the unique idiosyncrasies of small-town life (annual outhouse races) and the universal experiences (our hunger for neighborliness) that unite us all.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1989, recounts the changing perceptions of the countryside throughout the nineteenth- and twentieth-centuries, helping us to understand more fully the issues that have influenced our view of the ideal countryside, past and present. Some of the chapters are concerned with ways in which Victorian artists, poets, and prose writers portrayed the countryside of their day; others with the landowners’ impressive and costly country houses, and their prettification of ‘model’ villages, reflecting fashionable romantic and Gothic styles. This title will be of interest to students of history.

Book excerpt: Police Chief Thomas Lynch investigates the disappearance of a six-year-old boy with a serious medical condition while coping with disrespect from townspeople and colleagues who don't like the fact that he's gay. It’s two weeks before Christmas 1997, and Chief Thomas Lynch faces a crisis when Cody Forrand, a six-year-old with a life-threatening medical condition, goes missing during a blizzard. The confusing case shines a national spotlight on the small, sleepy town of Idyll, Connecticut, where small-time crime is already on the rise and the police seem to be making mistakes left and right. Further complicating matters, Lynch, still new to town, finds himself the target of prank calls and hate speech that he worries is the work of a colleague, someone struggling to accept working with a gay chief of police. With time ticking away, Lynch is beginning to doubt whether he’ll be able to bring Cody home safely . . . and whether Idyll could ever really be home.

Book excerpt: Follow the adventures of the Gravesend Malt Whisky club as fired only by excess alcohol and enthusiasm they decide to embark on the Caledonian Challenge; a 54 mile walk across Scotland to be completed non-stop within 24 hours. Starting with training "walks" that seemingly involve more time in the pub than actually walking they eventually start some serious training and cover most of Kent in the process. Against all expectations they finally make it to Scotland and although embarking on a serious endeavour they still have time to muse on the landscape and history of the countryside they are walking through. Will they actually make it or simply retire to the pub half way round? Read on and find out... What they said about the book Funnily enough I started it last night and have got half way through it as (and this may surprise you) I found it to be a good read. A few things I would change and some great typos; my favourite being 'as bold as bras'. Just the kind of bras I like!! Look forward to the next submission. Andy Parr PR guru and alleged editor of Six Men on a Walk (although he never actually provided any edits) on receiving the first thirty pages for editing. At the end of the book I was left with a number of feelings; a very minor yearning for home, a regret that I had not seen more of Scotland, but mainly a desire to read more work by this new and exciting author, I Jackson esquire. Well done mate another achievement that I couldn't even imagine attempting. Darrell Read Retired (aged 42) city broker, best mate and part time sycophant. This is very, very good...I chuckled away...should really be dashing to Faversham...!!! James Pilcher Surveyor and illustrator of Six Men on a Walk
Book Synopsis Rambling in Monmouthshire - A Historical Walking Guide to the Trails and Paths of Wales by : Various
Download or read book Rambling in Monmouthshire - A Historical Walking Guide to the Trails and Paths of Wales written by Various and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boundary of the county that lies near Gloucestershire shares some of its neighbour's popularity-and a little of its speech; Chepstow, with its castle and magnificently wooded banks of the Wye, is justly famous, but the walking country around Newport is often neglected, not only by its residents, but by passing visitors too. What endless possibilities there are of walks in contrasting scenery-the hills of the Mynydd Maen range, "the marshes", lush fields and shady woods, to mention just a few of the ever-changing scenes. The main rivers of the county are the Wye, Usk, Ebbw and Rhymney. The Usk and its tributaries will be the main waterways in the walks described hereafter, particularly the Soar Brook and the Olway, and the turbulent Afon Llwyd.
