Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of identifying radar targets without predetermined knowledge or measurements of their aspect angle is examined. The proposed solution is to use radar magnitude and phase versus frequency data in the resonance region as input data for pattern recognition techniques. Practical methods are developed for measuring radar phase and dealing with polarization effects. Pattern recognition algorithms that optimize separation between pairs of input data are developed. These algorithms are based on digital spatial frequency filtering of curves of the radar return versus the radar frequency. The technique is simulated on a digital computer for three objects - a cylinder, a cone, and a step cylinder - all of about the same size. Results show that at most aspect angles, satisfactory recognition is attained at moderate signal-to-noise ratios.

Book excerpt: Radar Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) and NonCooperative Target Recognition (NCTR) captures material presented by leading international experts at a NATO lecture series and explores both the fundamentals of classification techniques applied to data from a variety of radar modes and selected advanced techniques at the forefront of research. The ability to detect and locate targets by day or night, over wide areas, regardless of weather conditions has long made radar a key sensor in many military and civil applications. However, the ability to automatically and reliably distinguish different targets represents a difficult challenge, although steady progress has been made over the past couple of decades. This book explores both the fundamentals of classification techniques applied to data from a variety of radar modes and selected advanced techniques at the forefront of research. Topics include: the problem as applied to the ground, air and maritime domains; impact of image quality on the overall target recognition performance; performance of different approaches to the classifier algorithm; improvement in performance to be gained when a target can be viewed from more than one perspective; ways in which natural systems perform target recognition; impact of compressive sensing; advances in change detection, including coherent change detection; and challenges and directions for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Principles of Modern Radar, has as its genesis a Georgia Tech short course of the same title. This short course has been presented an nually at Georgia Tech since 1969, and a very comprehensive set of course notes has evolved during that seventeen year period. The 1986 edition of these notes ran to 22 chapters, and all of the authors involved, except Mr. Barrett, were full time members of the Georgia Tech research faculty. After considerable encouragement from various persons at the university and within the radar community, we undertook the task of editing the course notes for formal publication. The contents of the book that ensued tend to be practical in nature, since each contributing author is a practicing engineer or scientist and each was selected to write on a topic embraced by his area(s) of expertise. Prime examples are Chaps. 2, 5, and 10, which were authored by E. F. Knott, G. W. Ewell, and N. C. Currie, respectively. Each of these three researchers is rec ognized in the radar community as an expert in the technical area that his chap ter addresses, and each had already authored and published a major book on his subject. Several other contributing authors, including Dr. Bodnar, Mr. Bruder, Mr. Corriher, Dr. Reedy, Dr. Trebits, and Mr. Scheer, also have major book publications to their credit.

Book excerpt: This book text provides an overview of the radar target recognition process and covers the key techniques being developed for operational systems. It is based on the fundamental scientific principles of high resolution radar, and explains how the underlying techniques can be used in real systems, taking into account the characteristics of practical radar system designs and component limitations. It also addresses operational aspects, such as how high resolution modes would fit in with other functions such as detection and tracking.

Book excerpt: Pattern recognition is the extraction of consistent information from noisy spatiotemporal data. It can be and is currently being used in systems for battlefield supervision, smart weapons, and anti-counterfeiting of all kinds. A currrent application is the automatic detection of land mines and unexploded ordnance. (UXO). The methods employed can be subdivided in the following manner: (1) statistical methods, (2) neuro - methods, (3) fuzzy - methods, and (4) neuro fuzzy methods. Each of these methods has its special advantages and drawbacks, but all of them require the computation of feature variables from measurement or simulation data, e.g. from microwave backscattering. The Lecture series covers the following topics: (1) Introductory overview on pattern recognition techniques, (1) - (4); (2)Feature extraction for pattern recognition by; (a)Electromagnetic, magnetic, and acoustic singularity identification; (b)Model based scattering signatures; (c) Wavelet techniques; (d) SAR/ISAR imaging; (e)Bistatic microwave imaging; and (f)Electromagnetic inversion techniques; (3) Real-time implementation of pattern recognition methods; and (4)Introduction to software and hardware for pattern recognition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dempster-Shafer theory offers an alternative to traditional probabilistic theory for the mathematical representation of uncertainty. The significant innovation of this framework is that it allows for the allocation of a probability mass to sets or intervals. Dempster-Shafer theory does not require an assumption regarding the probability of the individual constituents of the set or interval. This is a potentially valuable tool for the evaluation of risk and reliability in engineering applications when it is not possible to obtain a precise measurement from experiments, or when knowledge is obtained from expert elicitation. An important aspect of this theory is the combination of evidence obtained from multiple sources and the modeling of conflict between them. This report surveys a number of possible combination rules for Dempster-Shafer structures and provides examples of the implementation of these rules for discrete and interval-valued data.

Book excerpt: The papers published in this volume were presented at the Second International Conference on Ultra-WidebandiShort-Pulse (UWB/SP) Electromagnetics, ApriIS-7, 1994. To place this second international conference in proper perspective with respect to the first conference held during October 8-10, 1992, at Polytechnic University, some background information is necessary. As we had hoped, the first conference struck a responsive cord, both in timeliness and relevance, among the electromagnetic community 1. Participants at the first conference already inquired whether and when a follow-up meeting was under consideration. The first concrete proposal in this direction was made a few months after the first conference by Prof. A. Terzuoli of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Dayton, Ohio, who has been a strong advocate of time-domain methods and technologies. He initially proposed a follow-up time-domain workshop under AFIT auspices. Realizing that interest in this subject is lodged also at other Air Force installations, we suggested to enlarge the scope, and received in this endeavor the support of Dr. A. Nachman of AFOSR (Air Force Office of Scientific Research), Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Intelligent Computing (ICIC) was formed to provide an annual forum dedicated to the emerging and challenging topics in artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, and computational biology, etc. It aims to bring - gether researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to share ideas, problems, and solutions related to the multifaceted aspects of intelligent computing. ICIC 2009, held in Ulsan, Korea, September 16-19, 2009, constituted the 5th - ternational Conference on Intelligent Computing. It built upon the success of ICIC 2008, ICIC 2007, ICIC 2006, and ICIC 2005 held in Shanghai, Qingdao, Kunming, and Hefei, China, 2008, 2007, 2006, and 2005, respectively. This year, the conference concentrated mainly on the theories and methodologies as well as the emerging applications of intelligent computing. Its aim was to unify the p- ture of contemporary intelligent computing techniques as an integral concept that hi- lights the trends in advanced computational intelligence and bridges theoretical research with applications. Therefore, the theme for this conference was “Emerging Intelligent Computing Technology and Applications.” Papers focusing on this theme were solicited, addressing theories, methodologies, and applications in science and technology.
