Public and private land managers and other professionals working in utilities, parks and conservation programs will also find useful and educational information to aid in identifying and controlling non-native invasive plants in the Tampa Bay area. While there are more than 125 exotic species identified by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council (EPPC) as Category I or II pest plants, the Invasive Species Task Force of Hillsborough County, Florida, has selected 20 especially troublesome plant species found in the Tampa Bay region. This field guide provides the information necessary to identify and chemically treat pest plants and includes replacement suggestions for replanting once the targeted plants are controlled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasions of nonnative plants into forests of the Southern United States continue to go unchecked and unmonitored. Invasive nonnative plants infest under and beside forest canopies and dominate small forest openings, increasingly eroding forest productivity, hindering forest use and management activities, and degrading diversity and wildlife habitat. Often called nonnative, exotic, nonindigenous, alien, or noxious weeds, they occur as trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, ferns, and forbs. This book provides information on accurate identification and effective control of the 33 nonnative plants and groups that are currently invading the forests of the 13 Southern States, showing both growing and dormant season traits. It lists other nonnative plants of growing concern, control strategies, and selective herbicide application procedures. Recommendations for preventing and managing invasions on a specific site include maintaining forest vigor with minimal disturbance, constant surveillance and treatment of new unwanted arrivals, and finally rehabilitation following eradication.

Book excerpt: Nonnative plants affect the composition and function of natural and managed ecosystems and have large economic effects through lost or degraded land use and eradication costs. In spite of their importance, very little comprehensive information on the abundance, distribution, and impact of nonnative invasive plants is available. The objective of this study was to prioritize a list of nonnative invasive plants affecting forest lands in the Pacific coastal states of California, Oregon, and Washington, and provide enough detail in nontechnical language and photos of different stages of plant development to allow reliable identification in the field. Information was synthesized from a variety of national, regional, and state lists, assessments, and botanical guides. The final list was designed to capture species believed to be most prevalent or problematic and to be used for strategic forest inventories like the Forest Inventory and Analysis Program. Identification of the several hundred nonnative invasive species present in the region requires substantial taxonomic experience; a prioritized short list of species with practical identification tips can be a good place for novice botanists and large-scale monitoring efforts to start.

Introduced species are an ecological disaster outside their own native ranges, disrupting food webs and creating imbalance. This book is a concise guide to over two dozen common invasive plants found in North America, along with the basics of how to identify them and control them. You'll also learn about how one invasive plant species can upset an entire ecosystem, how planting native plants can help restore balance, and more!

Book excerpt: Invasions of nonnative plants into forests of the Southern United States continue to go unchecked and only partially unmonitored. These infestations increasingly erode forest productivity, hindering forest use and management activities, and degrading diversity and wildlife habitat. Often called nonnative, exotic, nonindigenous, alien, or noxious weeds, they occur as trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, ferns, and forbs. This book provides information on accurate identification of the 56 nonnative plants and groups that are currently invading the forests of the 13 Southern States. It lists other nonnative plants of growing concern. Recommendations for prevention and control of these species are provided in a companion booklet, "A Management Guide for Invasive Plants of Southern Forests," published by the Southern Research Station as a General Technical Report. Basic strategies for managing invasions on a specific site include maintaining forest vigor with minimal disturbance, constant surveillance and treatment of new unwanted arrivals, and finally, rehabilitation following eradication.
