Book excerpt: A channel catfish FcR homolog (IpFcRI) was identified, which represents the first such receptor from an ectothermic vertebrate. This is an important step toward understanding the evolution and functional importance of vertebrate immunoglobulin (Ig)-binding receptors. It is encoded by a single-copy gene containing three Ig-like domains and lacks a transmembrane segment and cytoplasmic tail. The IpFcRI Ig-like domains are phylogenetically related to mammalian FcRs and the putative Ig-binding region appears to be conserved. Qualitative PCR analyses demonstrate that kidney leukocytes express high levels of IpFcRI message and soluble IpFcRI was readily detected in catfish serum. When recombinant IpFcRI was expressed on HeLa cells or immobilized onto latex beads it bound native catfish IgM and IgM-immune complexes. In addition, recombinant IpFcRI also bound reduced catfish IgM heavy (H) chains and Ig H chains from other species in Western blot analyses. Such data indicate that IpFcRI likely functions as a secreted FcR.

The combi- tion of stressors can result in increased risk to organisms (either additive or synergistic effects) or decreased effects (protective or antagonistic effects). The multiple stressor challenge is an international, multi-disciplinary problem requiring an international, multi-disciplinary approach. The c- rent approach to multiple stressors is to examine one stressor at a time and assume additivity. Little work has been done on combinations of stressors such that potential interactions can be determined. The problem is very complex. Multiple stressors pose a whole spectrum of challenges that range from basic science to regulation, policy and gove- ance. The challenges raise fundamental questions about our understanding of the basic biological response to stressors, as well as the implications of those uncertainties in environmental risk assessment and management. In addition to the great breadth, there is also great depth in the research ch- lenges, largely due to the complexity of the issues. From a basic science point of view, many of the mechanisms and processes under investigation are at the cutting edge of science — involving new paradigms such as genomic ins- bility and bystander effects.

The results have been almost universally impressive, and today nearly all agricultural production utilises genetically improved seed and animals. The aquaculture industry can learn a great deal from these experiences, because the basic theory behind selective breeding is the same for all species. The ?rst published selection experiments in aquaculture started in 1920 s to improve disease resistance in ?sh, but it was not before the 1970 s that the ?rst family based breeding program was initiated for Atlantic salmon in Norway by AKVAFORSK. Unfortunately, the subsequent implementation of selective breeding on a wider scale in aquaculture has been slow, and despite the dramatic gains that have been demonstrated in a number of species, less than 10% of world aquaculture production is currently based on improved stocks. For the long-term sustainability of aquaculture production, there is an urgent need to develop and implement e- cient breeding programs for all species under commercial production. The ability for aquaculture to successfully meet the demands of an ever increasing human p- ulation, will rely on genetically improved stocks that utilise feed, water and land resources in an ef?cient way. Technological advances like genome sequences of aquaculture species, and advanced molecular methods means that there are new and exciting prospects for building on these well-established methods into the future.
