Book excerpt: Determinantal rings and varieties have been a central topic of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. Their study has attracted many prominent researchers and has motivated the creation of theories which may now be considered part of general commutative ring theory. The book gives a first coherent treatment of the structure of determinantal rings. The main approach is via the theory of algebras with straightening law. This approach suggest (and is simplified by) the simultaneous treatment of the Schubert subvarieties of Grassmannian. Other methods have not been neglected, however. Principal radical systems are discussed in detail, and one section is devoted to each of invariant and representation theory. While the book is primarily a research monograph, it serves also as a reference source and the reader requires only the basics of commutative algebra together with some supplementary material found in the appendix. The text may be useful for seminars following a course in commutative ring theory since a vast number of notions, results, and techniques can be illustrated significantly by applying them to determinantal rings.

Chapters carefully examine some of the most important topics in the area, including Nagata, F-finite and excellent rings, Bertini’s Theorem, and Cohen factorizations. Of particular interest is the presentation of Popescu’s Theorem on Neron Desingularization and the structure of regular morphisms, with a complete proof. Classes of Good Noetherian Rings will be an invaluable resource for researchers in commutative algebra, algebraic and arithmetic geometry, and number theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to classical methods in commutative algebra and their applications to number theory, algebraic geometry, and computational algebra. The use of number theory as a motivating theme throughout the book provides a rich and interesting context for the material covered. In addition, many results are reinterpreted from a geometric perspective, providing further insight and motivation for the study of commutative algebra. The content covers the classical theory of Noetherian rings, including primary decomposition and dimension theory, topological methods such as completions, computational techniques, local methods and multiplicity theory, as well as some topics of a more arithmetic nature, including the theory of Dedekind rings, lattice embeddings, and Witt vectors. Homological methods appear in the author's sequel, Homological Methods in Commutative Algebra. Overall, this book is an excellent resource for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in algebra or number theory. It is also suitable for students in neighboring fields such as algebraic geometry who wish to develop a strong foundation in commutative algebra. Some parts of the book may be useful to supplement undergraduate courses in number theory, computational algebra or algebraic geometry. The clear and detailed presentation, the inclusion of computational techniques and arithmetic topics, and the numerous exercises make it a valuable addition to any library.

These results are applied and illustrated in the context of important classes of algebras that arise in a variety of areas and have recently been intensively studied. The focus is on the interplay between combinatorics and algebraic structure. Mathematical physicists will find this work interesting for its attention to applications of the Yang-Baxter equation.

Book excerpt: Commutative Ring Theory emerged as a distinct field of research in math ematics only at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is rooted in nine teenth century major works in Number Theory and Algebraic Geometry for which it provided a useful tool for proving results. From this humble origin, it flourished into a field of study in its own right of an astonishing richness and interest. Nowadays, one has to specialize in an area of this vast field in order to be able to master its wealth of results and come up with worthwhile contributions. One of the major areas of the field of Commutative Ring Theory is the study of non-Noetherian rings. The last ten years have seen a lively flurry of activity in this area, including: a large number of conferences and special sections at national and international meetings dedicated to presenting its results, an abundance of articles in scientific journals, and a substantial number of books capturing some of its topics. This rapid growth, and the occasion of the new Millennium, prompted us to embark on a project aimed at presenting an overview of the recent research in the area. With this in mind, we invited many of the most prominent researchers in Non-Noetherian Commutative Ring Theory to write expository articles representing the most recent topics of research in this area.

The work contains a definitive account of algebraically compact modules, a topic of central importance for both module and model theory. Using concrete examples, particular emphasis is given to model theoretic concepts, such as axiomizability. Pure mathematicians, especially algebraists, ring theorists, logicians, model theorists and representation theorists, should find this an absorbing and stimulating book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When looking for applications of ring theory in geometry, one first thinks of algebraic geometry, which sometimes may even be interpreted as the concrete side of commutative algebra. However, this highly de veloped branch of mathematics has been dealt with in a variety of mono graphs, so that - in spite of its technical complexity - it can be regarded as relatively well accessible. While in the last 120 years algebraic geometry has again and again attracted concentrated interes- which right now has reached a peak once more - , the numerous other applications of ring theory in geometry have not been assembled in a textbook and are scattered in many papers throughout the literature, which makes it hard for them to emerge from the shadow of the brilliant theory of algebraic geometry. It is the aim of these proceedings to give a unifying presentation of those geometrical applications of ring theo~y outside of algebraic geometry, and to show that they offer a considerable wealth of beauti ful ideas, too. Furthermore it becomes apparent that there are natural connections to many branches of modern mathematics, e. g. to the theory of (algebraic) groups and of Jordan algebras, and to combinatorics. To make these remarks more precise, we will now give a description of the contents. In the first chapter, an approach towards a theory of non-commutative algebraic geometry is attempted from two different points of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second text in this two-book series extends the classical material of Volume I, which focuses on field theory and the ideal theory of Noetherian rings and Dedekind domains. The connection of Volume II's material to algebraic geometry is stressed throughout the presentation, making this book a practical introduction to some basic concepts and the arithmetical foundations of algebraic geometry. The opening chapter deals with properties of places and is followed by a chapter that explores the classical properties of polynomial and power series rings and their applications to algebraic geometry. The final chapter examines the theory of local rings, which provides the algebraic basis for the local study of algebraic and analytical varieties. Several helpful Appendixes conclude the text.
