Download or read book The Fantastic and European Gothic written by Matthew Gibson and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the rise of Fantastic literature on the continent in the nineteenth century, the development of a European Gothic and the influence which this exerted on British writers. By examining writers like Nodier, Hoffmann, Gautier, Féval and Stevenson, the book argues firstly how their writings subvert entirely the view of the Fantastic accepted by Todorov, Punter and others, to show that it is the reversal of a pre-Enlightenment, spiritual world-view which causes terror in these works, and further demonstrates that Gothic novels frequently use allusion and anachronism to portray a cyclical view of history opposed to that of Scott.

Download or read book Satanic Feminism written by Per Faxneld and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Bible, Eve was the first to heed Satan's advice to eat the forbidden fruit and thus responsible for all of humanity's subsequent miseries. The notion of woman as the Devil's accomplice is prominent throughout Christian history and has been used to legitimize the subordination of wives and daughters. In the nineteenth century, rebellious females performed counter-readings of this misogynist tradition. Lucifer was reconceptualized as a feminist liberator of womankind, and Eve became a heroine. In these reimaginings, Satan is an ally in the struggle against a tyrannical patriarchy supported by God the Father and his male priests. Per Faxneld shows how this Satanic feminism was expressed in a wide variety of nineteenth-century literary texts, autobiographies, pamphlets, newspaper articles, paintings, sculptures, and even artifacts of consumer culture like jewelry. He details how colorful figures like the suffragette Elizabeth Cady Stanton, gender-bending Theosophist H. P. Blavatsky, author Aino Kallas, actress Sarah Bernhardt, anti-clerical witch enthusiast Matilda Joslyn Gage, decadent marchioness Luisa Casati, and the Luciferian lesbian poetess Renée Vivien embraced these reimaginings. By exploring the connections between esotericism, literature, art and the political realm, Satanic Feminism sheds new light on neglected aspects of the intellectual history of feminism, Satanism, and revisionary mythmaking.

Book Synopsis English Language Criticism on the Foreign Novel: 1965-1975 by :
Download or read book English Language Criticism on the Foreign Novel: 1965-1975 written by and published by Athens : Swallow Press/Ohio University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical interest in foreign novels, especially the Latin American and African novel, has burgeoned in the past two decades. The purpose of this reference bibliography is to provide easier access to the criticism produced from 1965 to 1975 on novels published in Africa, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Canada, Australia, and the middle East. A second volume will cover criticism between 1976 and 1985. Throughout this work, the term "foreign novel" includes novels and other longer works of fiction produced in all countries other than the United States and the United Kingdom. Coverage ranges in time of writing from Apuleius' Metamorphosis (first century, A.D.) and Murasaki's Tale of Genji (11th century) to Garcia Marquez's 100 Years of Solitude (1967) and Margaret Atwood's Surfacing (1972). The 277 journals--chosen primarily because of their wide circulation--and 584 books indexed for relevant material contribute to the 13,000 bibliographic citations on 1,500 authors. This is a reference tool which is surely essential for any library or world literature scholar.
