Download or read book Cutthroat written by Pat Trotter and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cutthroat tells the full story of the genuine native trout of the American West. This new edition, thoroughly revised and updated after 20 years, synthesizes what is currently known about one of our most interesting and colorful fishes, includes much new information on its biology and ecology, asks how it has fared in the last century, and looks toward its future. In a passionate and accessibly written narrative, Patrick Trotter, fly fisher, environmental advocate, and science consultant, details the evolution, natural history, and conservation of each of the cutthroat's races and incorporates more personal reflections on the ecology and environmental history of the West's river ecosystems. The bibliography now includes what may be the most comprehensive and complete set of references available anywhere on the cutthroat trout. Written for anglers, nature lovers, environmentalists, and students, and featuring vibrant original illustrations by Joseph Tomelleri, this is an essential reference for anyone who wants to learn more about this remarkable, beautiful, and fragile western native.

Book Synopsis Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes, 2005 by : Małgorzata Jankun
Download or read book Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes, 2005 written by Małgorzata Jankun and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coregonids (whitefish, vendace, cisco, etc.) are cold-water adapted fishes common throughout the Holarctic in North America, Europe and Asia. They have evolved into a myriad of forms, subspecies and species during and after the Pleistocene glaciations. They are therefore rich subjects for the study of evolutionary problems. Coregonids support important commercial, subsistence and recreational fisheries and are the subject of significant aquaculture operations around the world. Although coregonids are generally considered to be fairly adaptable to the pressures of exploitation, they do appear to be sensitive to changing environmental conditions such as eutrophication and a number of populations and species have been extirpated, usually by deteriorating environments coupled with the introduction of exotic species and by commercial exploitation. This sizeable volume contains 40 peer-reviewed contributions on current topics of coregonid research presented at the Ninth International Symposium on the Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes, held in August 2005, in Olsztyn, Poland. They cover all aspects of coregonid life and managment. The contributions can be grouped into of five subject areas: genetics and evolution; biology, life history and population dynamics; invasive species; fisheries in Europe and fisheries in North America

Book Synopsis Broodstock Management and Egg and Larval Quality by : Niall R. Bromage
Download or read book Broodstock Management and Egg and Larval Quality written by Niall R. Bromage and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1995-02-17 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, the supply of eggs and fry is one of the major constraints on future aquaculture development. For the majority of farmed species, production is totally dependent on harvesting of broodstocks or seed from wild populations At present we know little about the control of reproduction of most farmed finfish nor of the detailed nutrient, metabolic and husbandry requirements of the broodstock or the ways in which they might be managed to optimize seed production and improve the quality of eggs and larvae. Newer technologies such as ploidy and gender manipulation, induced spawning and cryopreservation are coming to the forefront of modern broodstock management and all of these topics are considered, in detail, in this new text. Broodstock Management and Egg and Larval Quality has been written as a standard text for commercial practitioners and students of aquaculture, fish biology and fisheries and provides a comprehensive review of current and future methods of broodstock and hatchery management. The range of marine and freshwater tropical and temperate finfish species considered, together with contributions from many of the world's most eminent fish biologists, provide comprehensive and international coverage of this increasingly important area of aquaculture.
