(our ages, if equal ized, would, I fancy, have given about twenty years to each man.) We gave ourselves. This aristocracy of service, no end of military airs; some of us even going-to the extreme of keep ing our jackets buttoned and our hair combed. We had been in action, too; had shot off a Confederate leg at Philippi, the first battle of the war, and had lost as many as a dozen men at Laurel Hill and Carrick's Ford, whither the enemy had fled in trying, Heaven knows why, to get away from us. We now brought to the task of subduing the Rebellion a patriotism Which never for a moment doubted that a rebel was a fiend accursed of God and the angels one for whose extirpation by force and arms each youth of us considered himself specially raised up. It was a strange country. Nine in ten of us had never seen a mountain, nor a hill as high as a church spire, until we had crossed the Ohio River. In power upon the emotions nothing, I think, is comparable to a first sight of mountains. To a member of a plains-tribe, born and reared on the flats of Ohio or In diana, a mountain region' was a perpetual miracle. Space seemed to have taken on a new dimension; areas to have not only length and breadth, but thickness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no writer who fought in the American Civil War left as eloquent, humorous, and sorrowful a record of the soldier's life as did famous writer, Ambrose Bierce. As he states, this account of several battles in which he was an officer centers around his person and observations. But what an observer! Written nearly 50 years after the war, Bierce captures the horror, confusion, disastrous mistakes, and humor of the war from ground level. He was a soldier at Shiloh, Franklin, and at many other battles of the Civil War. Seriously wounded in the head at Kennesaw Mountain he was out of action for several months but returned to service.Late in his life, Bierce disappeared without a trace in Mexico. The mystery of his disappearance has never been solved. There is not another Civil War memoir quite like this. With his wonderful economy of style, his cynical wit, and his passion for the subject, Bierce left one of the most remarkable, if short, autobiographies of the war.Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.Annotated and contains:---On a Mountain---A Little of Chickamauga---A Crime at Pickett's Mill---What I Saw of Shiloh---What Happened at Franklin

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Civil War I have written this account of my experience in the service of my country from memory, aided by old diaries, letters, etc., and have endeavored to be as accurate as possible, in regard to dates and events of historical importance, but if mistakes occur, it cannot be wondered at, after such a lapse of time. Some of my diaries were lost upon the battlefield, and of those that remain, many of the entries were in pencil and are almost effaced. I had no intention when I began writing of making a long story, but as I went on, memory brought back many a stirring scene, many a weary march, many a tender thought of comrades who shared them all with me, and so I have written them down as they came to me. My thanks are due my wife for so carefully editing, and my son for printing my attempt to keep in a permanent form, my recollections of the War of the Rebellion. "The opinions expressed are sincerely entertained, but of their correctness such readers as I may find must judge. I have in most cases been a witness to the facts alleged, or have obtained them from the best sources. Where statements are made upon less authority, I have carefully endeavored to indicate it by the language employed."

Book excerpt: For several years my friends among Confederate soldiers have been urging me to "write up" and publish what I know of the war. By personal solicitation and by letter this subject has been brought before me and placed in the light of a duty which I owe to posterity. Taking this view of it, I willingly comply, glad that I am permitted to stand among the many "witnesses" who shall establish "the truth," proud to write myself as one who faithfully served the defenders of the Cause which had and has my heart's devotion. I have tried to give a faithful record of my experiences, to "nothing extenuate nor aught set down in malice," and I have told the truth, but not always the whole truth. A few of these "Memories" were originally written for theSouthern Bivouac, and are here republished because my book would have been incomplete without them.I am very inexperienced in the business of making books, but relying with confidence upon the leniency of my friends, and feeling sure that I have no enemy who will savagely rejoice that I have written a book, I make the venture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the history of Civil War commemorations from both sides of the color line, William Blair places the development of memorial holidays, Emancipation Day celebrations, and other remembrances in the context of Reconstruction politics and race relations in the South. His grassroots examination of these civic rituals demonstrates that the politics of commemoration remained far more contentious than has been previously acknowledged. Commemorations by ex-Confederates were intended at first to maintain a separate identity from the U.S. government, Blair argues, not as a vehicle for promoting sectional healing. The burial grounds of fallen heroes, known as Cities of the Dead, often became contested ground, especially for Confederate women who were opposed to Reconstruction. And until the turn of the century, African Americans used freedom celebrations to lobby for greater political power and tried to create a national holiday to recognize emancipation. Blair's analysis shows that some festive occasions that we celebrate even today have a divisive and sometimes violent past as various groups with conflicting political agendas attempted to define the meaning of the Civil War.
