Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Icon painting has reached its zenith in Ukraine between the 11th and 18th centuries. This art is appealing because of its great openness to other influences – the obedience to the rules of Orthodox Christianity in its early stages, the borrowing from Roman heritage or later to the Western breakthroughs – combined with a never compromised assertion of a distinctly Slavic soul and identity. This book presents a handpicked and representative selection of works from the 11th century to the late Baroque period.

With its fourteen chapters the present volume documents this living tradition from a variety of perspectives to offer the first national survey of its kind. Here, for the first time, folklorists join with art historians, anthropologists, a scientist, a theologian, enthusiasts, and iconographers to underscore the richness of a phenomenon that continues to captivate large segments of the country’s population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Divine Images Became Art tells the story of the parallel ‘discovery’ of Russian medieval art and of the Italian ‘primitives’ at the beginning of the twentieth century. While these two developments are well-known, they are usually studied in isolation. Tarasov’s study has the great merit of showing the connection between the art world in Russia and the West, and its impact in the cultural history of the continent in the pre-war period. Drawing on a profound familiarity with Russian sources, some of which are little known to Western scholars, and on equally expert knowledge of Western material and scholarship, Oleg Tarasov presents a fresh perspective on early twentieth-century Russian and Western art. The author demonstrates that during the Belle Époque, the interest in medieval Russian icons and Italian ‘primitives’ lead to the recognition of both as distinctive art forms conveying a powerful spiritual message. Formalist art theory and its influence on art collecting played a major role in this recognition of aesthetic and moral value of ‘primitive’ paintings, and was instrumental in reshaping the perception of divine images as artworks. Ultimately, this monograph represents a significant contribution to our understanding of early twentieth-century art; it will be of interest to art scholars, students and anyone interested in the spiritual and aesthetic revival of religious paintings in the Belle Époque.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1965, Evdokimov's Orthodoxy presents a synthesis of the essential elements of Orthodox traditions as they appear throughput Church history - revealing the fruit born from the Russian diaspora in Western Europe and the interface of Orthodoxy with both the Christian and atheist West. Evodokimov quotes the 'Father' in order to bring their wisdom to bear on the modern spirit and in modern discourse. Rooting things in the anthropological teaching that 'God became human so that humans might became God,' Evdokimov considers asceticism, mysticism, ecclesiology, the faith of the Church, the prayer of the Church, and Eschaton or 'Last Things.' In his preface to the 1979 edition, Olivier Clément wrote that Evdokimov's descriptions of the Last Things show that the 'eschatological process is already at work' and that 'the Parousia will not be the return of Christ into the world but the "passing over" of the world into Christ ... Evdokimov appeals to a saintliness that is both kenotic and creative, humble but capable of radiating life into all the complexity of history ... [He speaks] to all who desire not accommodations between churches, whether diplomatic or whatever people are willing to settle for, but "the centre where the Lines converge."' Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Lenin’s regime turned Russia’s priceless cultural patrimony into armored cars, trains, planes, and machine guns Historians have never resolved a central mystery of the Russian Revolution: How did the Bolsheviks, despite facing a world of enemies and leaving nothing but economic ruin in their path, manage to stay in power through five long years of civil war? In this penetrating book, Sean McMeekin draws on previously undiscovered materials from the Soviet Ministry of Finance and other European and American archives to expose some of the darkest secrets of Russia’s early days of communism. Building on one archival revelation after another, the author reveals how the Bolsheviks financed their aggression through astonishingly extensive thievery. Their looting included everything from the cash savings of private citizens to gold, silver, diamonds, jewelry, icons, antiques, and artwork. By tracking illicit Soviet financial transactions across Europe, McMeekin shows how Lenin’s regime accomplished history’s greatest heist between 1917 and 1922 and turned centuries of accumulated wealth into the sinews of class war. McMeekin also names names, introducing for the first time the compliant bankers, lawyers, and middlemen who, for a price, helped the Bolsheviks launder their loot, impoverish Russia, and impose their brutal will on millions.
