Book excerpt: The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) is the worldwide organization of societies which are dedicated primarily or significantly to applied and/or industrial mathematics. The ICIAM Congresses, held every 4 years, are run under the auspices of the Council with the aim to advance the applications of mathematics in all parts of the world. The Sixth ICIAM Congress was held in Zurich, Switzerland, July 16-20, 2007, and was attended by more than 3000 scientists from 47 countries. This volume collects the invited lectures of this Congress, the appreciations of the ICIAM Prize winners' achievements, and the Euler Lecture celebrating the 300th anniversary of Euler. The authors of these papers are leading researchers in their fields, rigorously selected by a distinguished international program committee. The book presents an overview of contemporary applications of mathematics, new perspectives, and open problems. Topics embrace analysis of and numerical methods for: linear and nonlinear partial differential equations multiscale modeling nonlinear problems involving integral operators controllability and observability asymptotic solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations contact problems in solid mechanics topology optimization of structures dissipation inequalities in systems theory greedy algorithms sampling in function space order-value optimization parabolic partial differential equations and deterministic games Moreover, particular applications involve risk in financial markets, radar imaging, brain dynamics, and complex geometric optics applied to acoustics and electromagnetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Included in this volume are the Invited Talks given at the 5th International Congress of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The authors of these papers are all acknowledged masters of their fields, having been chosen through a rigorous selection process by a distinguished International Program Committee. This volume presents an overview of contemporary applications of mathematics, with the coverage ranging from the rhythms of the nervous system, to optimal transportation, elasto-plasticity, computational drug design, hydrodynamic and meteorological modeling, and valuation in financial markets. Many papers are direct products of the computer revolution: grid generation, multi-scale modeling, high-dimensional numerical integration, nonlinear optimization, accurate floating-point computations and advanced iterative methods. Other papers demonstrate the close dependence on developments in mathematics itself, and the increasing importance of statistics. Additional topics relate to the study of properties of fluids and fluid-flows, or add to our understanding of Partial Differential Equations.

Book excerpt: This book reports recent mathematical developments in the Programme "Analysis, Modeling and Simulation of Multiscale Problems", which started as a German research initiative in 2006. Multiscale problems occur in many fields of science, such as microstructures in materials, sharp-interface models, many-particle systems and motions on different spatial and temporal scales in quantum mechanics or in molecular dynamics. The book presents current mathematical foundations of modeling, and proposes efficient numerical treatment.

Book excerpt: The International conference on Multiscale problems in science and technol ogy; Challenges to mathematical analysis and applications brought together mathematicians working on multiscale techniques (homogenisation, singular perturbation) and specialists from applied sciences who use these techniques. Our idea was that mathematicians could contribute to solving problems in the emerging applied disciplines usually overlooked by them and that specialists from applied sciences could pose new challenges for multiscale problems. Numerous problems in natural sciences contain multiple scales: flows in complex heterogeneous media, many particles systems, composite media, etc. Mathematically, we are led to study of singular homogenisation limits and the procedure is called upscaling or homogenisation. The processes to be up scaled are usually described by differential equations. For simple cases, when the differential equation is linear and the heterogeneities are periodic some progress has been made. However, most natural phenomena are described by nonlinear differential equations in a random nonhomogeneous medium and, despite an intensive development in recent years, there are many open problems. The objective of the conference was to bring together leading special ists from Europe and the United States and to discuss new challenges in this quickly developing field. Topics of the conference were Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and Applied Analysis, with direct applications to the modeling in Material Sciences, Petroleum Engineering and Hydrodynamics.
