Book excerpt: Life and Songs of Marlene Dietrich Marlene Dietrich was one of Hollywood's topmost stars and one of the greatest myths in cinema. She was born in Germany but later on, after being discovered by Josef von Sternberg, she migrated to the US to eventually become a citizen. She was the seduction icon, the fatal woman with the eternal femininity. Her intense militancy against Nazism and her participation, as a soldier in the Second World War revealed an extraordinary aspect of her life and personality. In this play, Marlene tells anecdotes, and speaks about intimate experiences of her legendary life interweaved with the famous songs that illustrated it. What is the mystery that Marlene hides and then reveals?

Book excerpt: This Texas Traditions Series reprint takes us back to the Lone Star State during the Cold War at the beginning of the 1960s. The postwar generation is in a frenzy of high living and profligate spending. Big Texas oil is still subsidized by a federal depletion allowance and cattle still account for much of the state’s wealth. But these longtime mainstays of Texas finance are giving way to transistors and computers. A new millionaire class is growing up around business mergers and electronic technology. The characters in Shrake’s novel are caught in this brave new world in one way or another. Some are the princes of prosperity; others are victims of it. This is a world of lobbyists, merger lawyers, small-time politicos, sons of oil money, and the women who cheer them on or worry about their souls. In the opening section of the novel, we visit the Texas Gulf Coast and see the machinations of Sam Guthrie and Waddy Morris Jr. as they attempt to take over a rival technology company. Back in Dallas, idealistic attorney Ben Carpenter moves to thwart the Guthrie/Morris takeover. Then we move to Fort Worth and attend the drunken party given in honor of Ben Carpenter’s thirtieth birthday. The party moved to Mexico on Cadmus Wilkins’s bus where everyone has to confront his or her inner self. And some are found wanting. The several vignettes of the novel paint an accurate picture of Texas as it moves into the urban era and as its middle class began deserting the old verities and tasting what were once forbidden pleasures. Shrake is a first-rate stylist who knows how the upper half lives.

Her name on a headstone with mine to follow.’ I remembered a warm May Day in 1948, when we both kneeled at the same altar waiting for a priest to give us our first taste of Jesus. She, in her white dress, was wondering if the day would yield enough for a new doll and pram, while I wondered if mine would yield enough for roller skates and maybe a new football. I recalled the honeymoon in Jersey in 1963, Miss World at the Royal Albert Hall in 1980, and the ball that followed at the Savoy Hotel. I said, “Sorry girl, I can’t give you a Taj Mahal, but I will write a book, which will hopefully make us more than just names on a tombstone.”

This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to put a method, a structure in madness? ”Since I’d be first to cast a stone at a murderer—I am one after all—I venture on writing these truthful chronicles as a study of human suffering,” writes a serial-killer, in a story of self-discovery gone amok. JUNG’S DEMON is a book as hallucinogenic as Hunter S. Thompson and as powerful as Oscar Zeta Acosta. It is as tragic as Malcolm Lowry and occasionally as funny as David Foster Wallace. "The murders Roman L. had committed with such a ferocious, savage intensity send shivers down my spine every time I reflect on his brutally honest confessions. He writes about “sinking into the terrifying Hell of my own soul, a cold, utter darkness of the scariest, most painful insanity that peels off your skin while your brain screams, crushed by madness.” Even now as I copy his words here, I shake as I furtively look around. And I am afraid. I dread, no matter how irrationally, that I somehow might meet him or one of his scary personalities anew, and, like I was once before in Paris, again be tricked into liking him by his disarming, almost child-like smile and by his mirthful laughter that hid both the frightened child in him and the terrifying, heartless monster sneering behind. This book contains his chronicles. His harrowing descent into Hell.” Think Kafka on acid and sprinkle some humor over it; that's JUNG'S DEMON. “What if I should discover that I myself am the enemy who must be loved? What then?” Carl Gustav Jung

The poems range from those concerned with time, especially the conjunction of the past and the future; those influenced by things or places specifically American, poems that appear vaguely autobiographical; and those based on actual historical or contemporary events, usually involving, and often narrated by, a child.

Book excerpt: The powerful story of a vibrant African American family torn apart by inner turmoil and the injustices perpetrated by a racist society Sissie Joplin is dying, and her surviving children have come to say good-bye. Estranged from their mother for years, Iris and Ralph have both achieved success—Iris as a jazz singer in Europe and Ralph as a playwright—but the pain of their youth remains forever alive in their memories. Sissie, too, remembers: the bitter struggles and the devastating tragedies; the indignities, cruelties, and deprivations visited upon a strong-willed black woman—and on the once proud men in her life ultimately defeated by a white society that at times seemed devoted to their destruction. Sissie was not always wise or fair, and her actions often did more harm than good, but she survived. And now, at the end of her life, it is time for a reckoning—and one last opportunity to heal. A powerfully affecting family saga and a provocative indictment of racism in America, Sissie is a magnificent achievement by John A. Williams, the award-winning author heralded by Ishmael Reed as “the best African American writer of the century.”

Book excerpt: Let us not assign a value to a journey based solely on how long it took to get to our destination. Looking back upon this extraordinary experience... I have few regrets. And those would be the times when I concealed and repressed my observations and true feelings out of fear of losing a most precious person. In reflection...these have been the most creative two years ever. I was awakened to my calling again (acting and writing) and my health certainly is an example of the path I chose to follow. I wish for each of you to find the courage to go beyond your "comfort zone." Oh yes, we'll meet again and share our adventures with all that includes. And connected to the best that has been given to me by God, I feel exhilarated by all that took place and most importantly...I still believe in the Power of LOVE...

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1962, The Lonely Life is legendary silver screen actress Bette Davis's lively and riveting account of her life, loves, and marriages--now in ebook for the first time, and updated with an afterword she wrote just before her death. As Davis says in the opening lines of her classic memoir: "I have always been driven by some distant music--a battle hymn, no doubt--for I have been at war from the beginning. I rode into the field with sword gleaming and standard flying. I was going to conquer the world." A bold, unapologetic book by a unique and formidable woman, The Lonely Life details the first fifty-plus years of Davis's life--her Yankee childhood, her rise to stardom in Hollywood, the birth of her beloved children, and the uncompromising choices she made along the way to succeed. The book was updated with new material in the 1980s, bringing the story up to the end of Davis's life--all the heartbreak, all the drama, and all the love she experienced at every stage of her extraordinary life. The Lonely Life proves conclusively that the legendary image of Bette Davis is not a fable but a marvelous reality.
