Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of Aboriginal street gangs such as Indian Posse, Manitoba Warriors, and Native Syndicate, Winnipeg garnered a reputation as the “gang capital of Canada.” Yet beyond the stereotypes of outsiders, little is known about these street gangs and the factors and conditions that have produced them. “Indians Wear Red” locates Aboriginal street gangs in the context of the racialized poverty that has become entrenched in the colonized space of Winnipeg’s North End. Drawing upon extensive interviews with Aboriginal street gang members as well as with Aboriginal women and elders, the authors develop an understanding from “inside” the inner city and through the voices of Aboriginal people – especially street gang members themselves. While economic restructuring and neo-liberal state responses can account for the global proliferation of street gangs, the authors argue that colonialism is a crucial factor in the Canadian context, particularly in western Canadian urban centres. Young Aboriginal people have resisted their social and economic exclusion by acting collectively as “Indians.” But just as colonialism is destructive, so too are street gang activities, including the illegal trade in drugs. Solutions lie not in “quick fixes” or “getting tough on crime” but in decolonization: re-connecting Aboriginal people with their cultures and building communities in which they can safely live and work.
Book Synopsis Revenge of the Red Club by : Kim Harrington
Download or read book Revenge of the Red Club written by Kim Harrington and published by Aladdin. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Will educate and inspire budding feminists…A real and necessary read, period!” —Kirkus Reviews “Empowering.” —Booklist “A middle school feminist manifesto that fans of girl-led ensembles like Ann M. Martin’s The Babysitter’s Club and Ann Brashares’s The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants will love.” —School Library Journal (starred review) A tween reporter discovers an important and beloved club at school is being shut down—and uses the power of the pen to try and activate some much-needed social change in this period-positive and empowering middle grade novel about the importance of standing up for what you believe in. Riley Dunne loves being a member of the Red Club. It’s more than a group of girls supporting each other through Aunt Flo’s ups and downs; it’s a Hawking Middle School tradition. The club’s secret locker has an emergency stash of supplies, and the girls are always willing to lend an ear, a shoulder, or an old pair of sweatpants. But when the school administration shuts the Red Club down because of complaints, the girls are stunned. Who would do that to them? The girls’ shock quickly turns into anger, and then they decide to get even. But wallpapering the gym with maxi pads and making tampon crafts in art class won’t bring their club back. Only Riley can do that. Using the skills she has cultivated as her school paper’s top investigative reporter (okay, only investigative reporter), she digs for the truth about who shut the club down and why. All the while dealing with friendship drama, a new and ridiculous dress code, and a support group that is now more focused on fighting with each other than fighting back. Can she save the Red Club before this rebellion turns into a full-scale war?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I completed writing this novel, I actually met the love of my life. The theme of this novel is 'fate'. So many individuals & so many co-incidences. We never remember someone we meet once or if we come across the person again. But, the destiny is so wise & designed. We feel the connection, place is right but the person we meet, can be wrong. It is common, we do right things for the wrong one & when we meet the right one we don't need to do anything, everything just falls in the right place. Same story is followed in the Life of a girl, who has a deep faith in Destiny, but forgets to see that everything was just around her & she was searching Love in the wrong direction. Few lines from him written for her, "Destiny and fate are as different as you and me. I know, you won't understand but that's the truth & I can see it..!"

Book Synopsis Family Sacrifices by : Russell Jeung
Download or read book Family Sacrifices written by Russell Jeung and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty-two percent of Chinese Americans report having no religious affiliation, making them the least religiously-identified ethnic group in the United States. But that statistic obscures a much more complex reality. Family Sacrifices reveals that Chinese Americans employ familism, not religion, as the primary narrative by which they find meaning, identity, and belonging. As a transpacific lived tradition, Chinese American familism prioritizes family above other commitments and has roots in Chinese Popular Religion and Confucianism. The spiritual and ethical systems of China emphasize practicing rituals and cultivating virtue, whereas American religious research usually focuses on belief in the supernatural or belonging to a religious tradition. To address this gap in understanding, Family Sacrifices introduces the concept of liyi, translated as ritual propriety and righteous relations. Re-appropriated from its original Chinese usage, liyi offers a new way of understanding Chinese religion and a new lens for understanding the emergence of religious "nones" in the United States. The first book based on national survey data on Asian American religious practices, Family Sacrifices is a seminal text on the fastest-growing racial group in the United States.
