The ethnographic approach shows what no historical account of books published during the pandemic will be able to capture, namely the movement of readers between new purchases and books long kept in their collections. The book follows readers who have tuned into novels about plague, apocalypse, and racial violence, but also readers whose taste for older novels, and for re-reading novels they knew earlier in their lives, has grown. Alternating between chapters that analyse single texts that were popular (Albert Camus's The Plague, Ali Smith's Summer, Charlotte Brönte's Jane Eyre) and others that describe clusters of, for example, dystopian fiction and nature writing, this work brings out the diverse quality of the Covid-19 bookshelf. Time is of central importance to this study, both in terms of the time of lockdown and the temporality of reading itself within this wider disrupted sense of time. As the virus sweeps through the country and the world twists into something ugly and unknown, the kings of this school become true monarchs. Even the teachers bow to them now. And I'm kinda glad about that 'stay six feet away from one another' rule, because without it, I know they'd rip me apart. At least there's a silver lining. I'm cosying up to Coach Monroe. My hot as hell, brooding P.E. teacher who has a vendetta of his own against the Night Keepers. And with his help, I may succeed at doing more than escaping the clutches of these heartless fiends. I might even destroy them along the way. My father taught me how to be strong. How to prepare for the end of the world. So this isn't going to be the end of my world, mark my words. But if I'm able to use my mind and body to bring these assholes to their knees, it might just be the end of theirs. This is a high school bully romance series where the main character will end up with more than one love interest. It may have triggers for some as it has off the charts angst, dark love-hate themes, scenes of intense bullying and some violence (not aimed towards the main character) and is not for the faint of heart. Prepare to enrol at Everlake Prep. Bring your hand sanitiser, face masks and toilet paper to barter with, but don't expect to hold onto them for long. Because it's time to go into quarantine with the Night Keepers. And everything you own now belongs to them.

Book excerpt: In 1831, Prussia was consumed by two fears: the possibility of revolution resulting from the 1830 November Uprising of Poland against Russia, and a looming cholera epidemic. As the contagion made its way across Russia, Prussian medical officials took note and prepared to respond to what they thought was a highly contagious disease. When it spread to Poland, Prussia instituted a strict quarantine policy on its border, inhibiting Prussian support of the Russian war effort in Poland. From the Polish perspective the quarantine was seen as a deliberate act of sabotage against the revolution, an attempt to cut off trade with the West. This book examines the Prussian government's strict health policy and its consequences, including social unrest and resulting public health reforms. Polish public health policy is investigated in light of the revolutionary government's needs. Information is provided on the cholera camps established by Prussia to quarantine Polish soldiers who crossed the border as refugees in July 1831, the height of the cholera fear in Prussia.
