Book excerpt: The “fascinating” #1 international bestseller of a quest across centuries by two intrepid women to reunite the pieces of a powerful, ancient chess set (Los Angeles Times Book Review). A fabulous, bejeweled chess set that belonged to Charlemagne has been buried in a Pyrenees abbey for a thousand years. As the bloody French Revolution rages in Paris, the nuns dig it up and scatter its pieces across the globe because, when united, the set contains a secret power that could topple civilizations. To keep the set from falling into the wrong hands, two novices, Valentine and Mireille, embark on an adventure that begins in the streets of Paris and leads to Russia, Egypt, Corsica, and into the heart of the Algerian Sahara. Two hundred years later, while on assignment in Algeria, computer expert Catherine Velis finds herself drawn unwillingly into the deadly “Game” still swirling around the legendary chess set—a game that will require her to risk her life and match wits with diabolical forces. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Katherine Neville including rare images from her life and travels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the diversity of theories of human psychology, the majority shares a view of the personality as a collection of traits, ways of thinking and acting, that allow the observer to define, recognize, and understand people and their motivations. The Eight Crystal Alliances takes a more inclusive, holistic approach toward a personality typology that incorporates the physical body, the thoughts, the emotions, and the soul. The book is based on the study and application of eight magnetic groups of “geometric alliances,” eight types of human personality classified along energetic principles linking human nature with “mineral nature.” These types, according to the authors, range from Cubic (rational and organized) to Rhombic (sympathetic, empathetic, and serving others) to Buddhic (here-now, spontaneous, creative, non-conventional, freedom-loving, rebellious, but level-headed). Uncovering the hidden relationship between the human and mineral kingdoms, the book addresses the deep vibrational energies contained within stones that can influence our etheric bodies and, consequently, the other bodies we are made of—mental, emotional, and physical. With detailed lists of stone qualities and case histories, the book shows readers how to use the power of these everyday objects in their personal lives and careers as part of their journey of spirit.

Book excerpt: Discover the Variety and Unity of the Early Church The Christian church of the early centuries spread throughout much of Asia, Africa, and Europe, spoke many languages, was situated within diverse cultural settings, and had varied worship practices; yet it maintained a vital unity on core teachings at the heart of the Christian faith. In The Global Church--The First Eight Centuries: From Pentecost through the Rise of Islam, author Donald Fairbairn helps readers understand both the variety and unity of the church in this pivotal era by: Re-centering the story of the church in its early centuries, paying greater attention to Africa, Turkey, and Syria, where most of the church's intellectual energy was nurtured Highlighting Christian communities outside the Roman Empire, as far afield as Persia and India, alongside those within it Identifying key events by their global, not merely Western, significance and taking into account early Christian interactions with other religions, particularly Islam The Global Church--The First Eight Centuries is an ideal introduction to the patristic era that broadens the narrative often recounted and places it more firmly in its varied cultural contexts. Students of the early church, formal and informal alike, will appreciate the fresh approach and depth of insight this book provides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-Eight Worlds is about a middle-aged, dying writer living in Italy who goes in search across Europe for the Eastern European girl he walked out on many years before. The novel deals with European culture, history, art, religion, as told though the writer, but is also about the underclass of Europe, the corruption, sex industry, and immigration, those who have slipped under the net. It also tells the story of Sela—the girl he walked out on, leaving her in their cheap bedsit in Amsterdam, when he began to get published—who was left abandoned in an Eastern European country, brought-up by her superstitious grandmother, then left orphaned, sexually exploited, smuggled across borders to Western Europe, where she worked as a prostitute before meeting the writer. The novel also deals with the writer’s childhood, growing-up during the ‘troubles’ in Northern Ireland, and his own escape. The book is (quite naturally, given the subject material) sexually explicit, but also full of black humour. At the end of the novel, he never finds Sela, but never really expected to, and the journey was more a search for himself, a penance for his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters from the last years of Santayana's life, written as he completed Dominations and Powers, the final volume of his autobiography, and the one-volume abridgement of his early five-part masterwork, The Life of Reason. This final volume of Santayana's letters spans the last five years of the philosopher's life. Despite the increasing infirmities of age and illness, Santayana continued to be remarkably productive during these years, working steadily until September 1952, when he died of stomach cancer, just three months short of his eighty-ninth birthday. Still living in the nursing home run by the "Blue Sisters" of the Little Company of Mary in Rome (now with such prewar luxuries as hot baths and central heating restored), Santayana completed his book Dominations and Powers, which had been more than fifty years in the making, the final part of his autobiography Persons and Places, published posthumously in 1953 as My Host the World, and the abridgement of his early five-part masterwork, The Life of Reason, into a single volume--all while continuing to maintain a voluminous correspondence with friends and admirers. The eight books of The Letters of George Santayana bring together over 3,000 letters, many of which have been discovered in the fifty years since Santayana's death. Letters in Book Eight are written to such correspondents as the young American poet Robert Lowell (whom Santayana thinks of "only as a friend and not merely as a celebrity" and to whom he sends a wedding gift of $500); Ira D. Cardiff, the editor of Atoms of Thought, a collection of excerpts from Santayana's writings (which, Santayana complained, portrayed him as more akin to Tom Paine than Thomas Aquinas); Richard Colton Lyon, a young Texan who would later collect Santayana's writings about America in Santayana on America: Essays, Notes, and Letters on American Life, Literature, and Philosophy (1968); and the humanist philosopher Corliss Lamont.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning sequel to Brigitte Jordan’s landmark Birth in Four Cultures brings together the work of fifteen reproductive anthropologists to address core cultural values and knowledge systems as revealed in contemporary birth practices in Brazil, Greece, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Tanzania, and the United States. Six ethnographic chapters form the heart of the book, three of which are set up as dyads that compare two countries; each demonstrates the power of anthropology’s cross-cultural comparative method. An additional chapter with ethnographic vignettes gives readers a feel for what fieldwork is really like on the ground. The eminently readable, theoretically rich chapters are enhanced by absorbing stories, photos, quotes, thought questions, and film suggestions that nudge the reader toward eureka flashes of understanding and render the book suitable for undergraduate and graduate audiences alike.
