Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book teaches people how Spirit operates directly in our lives today and what we must do to live life to the fullest and with malice toward none. It teaches spiritual principles on how to live life with gratitude, acceptance, joy, abundance and wellness. It connects us with our eternal being within and encourages us to create our own soul music without. Have we lost our way as a society? In the wake of humans murdering over 100 million other humans in the past century, many of us are seeking answers to the ever increasing cultural violence surrounding us. From capital punishment to going postal, we live in a very violent society. Hardly a day passes without news of government torture prisons, drive-by shootings, a ten year old boy murdering his father, or a congresswoman being shot in the head. Shocking revelations, such as American government doctors using unsuspecting American citizens as human guinea pigs for decades of medical experiments, further alienate the government from the people that they are supposed to serve. It seems to me that we need a new vision of humanity that our faltering institutions have failed to provide. I believe that we need to replace institutional blight with greater spirituality. We need a new spirit of integrity that replaces the often deceitful and violent leadership we currently embrace. We need to challange the "don't get mad get even" mentality in our society with greater understanding for one another. We need to be role models for positive reinforcement (learning) rather than the punishment that only teaches more violence and hatred, and, like the Montagues and Capulets, the never-ending need to seek revenge. This book addresses how to live a life of health and wellness in the midst of a truly sick society.

His brother, Josh, and sister-in-law, Honey, are killed in a terrible car accident. The only survivor is their three-year-old daughter, Ariel, who was saved by being in her child car seat. Ariel becomes David’s ward, his child, his life. David’s lonely existence as a writer is gone forever. He struggles to overcome the grief that he and his niece are suffering. He must also face the day-to-day difficulties of becoming a parent to Ariel, as they both transition to a new life together. The transformation of David to a loving adult and father is painful, moving, but above all, inspirational. He also learns that life isn’t through pitching him curveballs. When David meets Rose, a nurse, they pursue a whirlwind courtship and marry. A Simple Twist of Fate tells how one moment in time can change everything. This story is about fate, karma, life.

Book excerpt: Sonority is a central notion in phonetics and phonology and it is essential for generalizations related to syllabic organization. However, to date there is no clear consensus on the phonetic basis of sonority, neither in perception nor in production. The widely used Sonority Sequencing Principle (SSP) represents the speech signal as a sequence of discrete units, where phonological processes are modeled as symbol manipulating rules that lack a temporal dimension and are devoid of inherent links to perceptual, motoric or cognitive processes. The current work aims to change this by outlining a novel approach for the extraction of continuous entities from acoustic space in order to model dynamic aspects of phonological perception. It is used here to advance a functional understanding of sonority as a universal aspect of prosody that requires pitch-bearing syllables as the building blocks of speech. This book argues that sonority is best understood as a measurement of pitch intelligibility in perception, which is closely linked to periodic energy in acoustics. It presents a novel principle for sonority-based determinations of well-formedness – the Nucleus Attraction Principle (NAP). Two complementary NAP models independently account for symbolic and continuous representations and they mostly outperform SSP-based models, demonstrated here with experimental perception studies and with a corpus study of Modern Hebrew nouns. This work also includes a description of ProPer (Prosodic Analysis with Periodic Energy). The ProPer toolbox further exploits the proposal that periodic energy reflects sonority in order to cover major topics in prosodic research, such as prominence, intonation and speech rate. The book is finally concluded with brief discussions on selected topics: (i) the phonotactic division of labor with respect to /s/-stop clusters; (ii) the debate about the universality of sonority; and (iii) the fate of the classic phonetics–phonology dichotomy as it relates to continuity and dynamics in phonology.

Book excerpt: An early view of eukaryotic chromosomes was that of static structures, which stored DNA not in use within a given cell type. It was thought that packaging of DNA into higher levels of chromatin structure would suffice to repress gene expression and that the challenge to the cell would be to rescue specific sequences from these structures. The exten sive packaging of inactive DNA was considered the primary difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic genomes and except for that point both would be similarly regulated by cis-acting sequences and trans acting factors. Our view of eukaryotic chromosomes has evolved dra matically over the last decade. The picture of chromosomes that is emerging is that of dynamic breathing organelles actively regulating the flow of genetic information from the genome. Indeed chromatin is so fluid that even maintaining gene quiescence is an active process and is tightly regulated. Chromatin dynamics is a consequence of protein complexes that modify histones, remove histone modifications, mobi lize nucleosomes or stabilize nucleosomes. Awide variety of such com plexes have now been described. Some are abundant and may play glo bal roles in chromosome fluidity and function. Others are more rare and specialized for specific functions at discreet loci. Moreover, several complexes share biochemical activities and genetic studies suggest overlapping functions in vivo. Many components of these complexes were first revealed in genetic screens, while others were discovered by novel cell biological or biochemical approaches.

Book excerpt: Imagine a product that increases alertness, boosts creativity, reduces stress, improves perception, stamina, motor skills, and accuracy, enhances your sex life, helps you make better decisions, keeps you looking younger, aids in weight loss, reduces the risk of heart attack, elevates your mood, and strengthens memory. Now imagine that this product is nontoxic, has no dangerous side effects, and, best of all, is absolutely free. This miracle drug is, in fact, nothing more than the nap: the right nap at the right time. The work of Sara C. Mednick, Ph.D., a researcher at the Salk Institute and the leading authority on the study of the nap, Take a Nap! Change Your Life. is the scientifically-based breakthrough program that shows how we can fight the fatigue epidemic—which afflicts an estimated 50 million Americans—through a custom-designed nap. Take a Nap! Change Your Life. explains the five stages of the sleep cycle, particularly Stage Two, Slow Wave Sleep, and REM, and the benefits each one provides; how to assess your tiredness and set up a personal sleep profile; and how to neutralize the voice in your head that tells you napping is a sign of laziness. (Not that anyone would have called JFK, Churchill, Einstein, or Napoleon a slug-a-bed.) Using the unique Nap Wheel on the cover and interior graphs and charts, it shows us exactly when our optimum napping time is, and exactly how long we should try to sleep—even how it’s possible to design a nap to inspire creativity one day, and the next day design one to help us with our memory. There are tips on how to create the right nap environment, a 16-step technique for falling asleep, a six-week napping workbook, and more.
