Book Synopsis Love in the Time of AIDS by : Mark Hunter
Download or read book Love in the Time of AIDS written by Mark Hunter and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some parts of South Africa, more than one in three people are HIV positive. Love in the Time of AIDS explores transformations in notions of gender and intimacy to try to understand the roots of this virulent epidemic. By living in an informal settlement and collecting love letters, cell phone text messages, oral histories, and archival materials, Mark Hunter details the everyday social inequalities that have resulted in untimely deaths. Hunter shows how first apartheid and then chronic unemployment have become entangled with ideas about femininity, masculinity, love, and sex and have created an economy of exchange that perpetuates the transmission of HIV/AIDS. This sobering ethnography challenges conventional understandings of HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

This volume explores how, over the past decade, social media platforms have deeply penetrated the fabric of everyday life. The author considers South Africans’ use of wearable tech and use of online health and sports tracking systems via mobile phones within the broader context of the digital data economy. The author also focuses on the dating app Tinder, to show how people negotiate and redefine intimacy through the practice of online dating via strategic performances in pursuit of love, sex and intimacy. The book concludes with the use of Facebook and Twitter for social activism (e.g. Fees Must Fall), as well as networked community building as in the case of the #imstaying movement. Download or read book Love in Africa written by Jennifer Cole and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, scholarly interest in love has flourished. Historians have addressed the rise of romantic love and marriage in Europe and the United States, while anthropologists have explored the ways globalization has reshaped local ideas about those same topics. Yet, love in Africa has been peculiarly ignored, resulting in a serious lack of understanding about this vital element of social life—a glaring omission given the intense focus on sexuality in Africa in the wake of HIV/AIDS. Love in Africa seeks both to understand this failure to consider love and to begin to correct it. In a substantive introduction and eight essays that examine a variety of countries and range in time from the 1930s to the present, the contributors collectively argue for the importance of paying attention to the many different cultural and historical strands that constitute love in Africa. Covering such diverse topics as the reception of Bollywood movies in 1950s Zanzibar, the effects of a Mexican telenovela on young people’s ideas about courtship in Niger, the models of romance promoted by South African and Kenyan magazines, and the complex relationship between love and money in Madagascar and South Africa, Love in Africa is a vivid and compelling look at love’s role in African society.

Download or read book Khayelitsha written by Steven Otter and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gunshots came in rapid succession. There were three of them, followed by screeching tyres and a screaming engine. In a matter of seconds I recalled the conversation I’d had with Mary. She’d been right after all. ‘You’ll be fine for a few days,’ she’d said, ‘but after that they’ll turn on you. Our cultures are too different. You won’t live through it, not just because of the cultural differences, but because of the common crime. Find a home here in the suburbs where you belong.’ The three gunshots had been my first, but perhaps for those who’d lived in these streets for years they were only three gunshots among countless others. Who knows? Perhaps three a week, maybe even three a night? ither way, I’d have to get used to them – or leave.
Book Synopsis The South Africa of His Heart by : Davida James
Download or read book The South Africa of His Heart written by Davida James and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1976, the summer of the Soweto student riots in South Africa. The massacres sparked world awareness of the horrors of apartheid and, many believe, were the catalyst for the eventual fall of apartheid fourteen years later when Nelson Mandela walked out of prison. A twenty-two year old woman enrolls in a college prep program in Harlem and meets a South African expatriate thirty-plus years her senior. He is there teaching English. Amidst the turmoil of that summer, they fall in love, marry and make plans to move to Nigeria. Set in New York, the Caribbean, London, South Africa and Los Angeles "The South Africa of His Heart" is a moving thirty-year memoir about how the circles in life can lead us to astounding places-often by chance. Ms. James shares the true story of the lifelong impact her South African husband made on her life. What unfolds is a touching, unconventional love story about dedication and a spiritual connection that bridged their physical separations. In a series of fateful discoveries, many years after their last encounter, she uncovers surprising and profound revelations about her first husband. *** "A touching, often poignant book, with lyrical qualities that bring you deep into the author's heart. The descriptions of the Caribbean are haunting. The author's emotional journey, exploring memories of her South African husband's influence in her life, offer a new interpretation of marital love." David Edgecombe, author of "Heaven and Other Plays" "Davida Siwisa James' memoir recounts an American woman's marriage to a man who took part in some of the most important history of our time. "The South Africa of His Heart"is an American story and an African story rolled into one fascinating tale." -Kathy Seal, Coauthor, "Pressured Parents, Stressed-out Kids: Dealing With Competition While Raising a Successful Child."

Book Synopsis Heritage Formation and the Senses in Post-apartheid South Africa by : Duane Jethro
Download or read book Heritage Formation and the Senses in Post-apartheid South Africa written by Duane Jethro and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative book, Duane Jethro creates a framework for understanding the role of the senses in processes of heritage making. He shows how the senses were important for crafting and successfully deploying new, nation-building heritage projects in South Africa during the post-apartheid period. The book highlights how heritage dynamics are entangled in evocative, changing sensory worlds. Heritage Formation and the Senses in Post-Apartheid South Africa features five case studies that correlate with the five main Western senses. Examples include touch and the ruination of a series of art memorials; how vision was mobilised to assert the authority of the state sponsored Freedom Park project in Pretoria; how small memories of apartheid era social life in Cape Town informed contemporary struggles for belonging after forced removal; how taste informed debates about the attempted rebranding of Heritage Day as barbecue day; and how the sound of the vuvuzela, popularised during the FIFA 2010 Football World Cup, helped legitimise its unofficial African and South African heritage status. This book makes a valuable contribution to the field of sensory studies and, with its focus on aesthetics and material culture, is in synch with the broader material turn in the humanities. This is important reading for students and scholars of anthropology, sociology, sensory studies, and transnational studies.

Book Synopsis Love, Sex and Teenage Sexual Cultures in South Africa by : Deevia Bhana
Download or read book Love, Sex and Teenage Sexual Cultures in South Africa written by Deevia Bhana and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love, Sex and Teenage Sexual Cultures in South Africa interrupts the relative silence around teenage constructions of love in South Africa. Against the backdrop of gender inequalities, HIV and violence, the book situates teenage constructions of love and romance within the wider social and cultural context underwritten by the histories of apartheid, chronic unemployment, poverty, and the endless struggle to survive. By drawing on focus group discussions with African teenage men and women, the book addresses teenage Africans as active agents, providing a more nuanced picture of their desires and their dilemmas through which sexuality and love are experienced. The chapters in the book conceptualise desiring love, material love, pure love, forced love and fearing love. It argues that love is intrinsically linked to cultural practices and material realities which mold particular formations of teenage masculinities and femininities. This book will be of interest to academics, undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in sociology, HIV, health and gender studies, development and postcolonial studies and African studies.
