Book Synopsis The Other End of the Leash by : Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.
Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.
Download or read book Programmed Sheep written by M. A. Fricker and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Programmed Sheep is an adult comedy built on my observation that humans all behave like sheep. Therefore, we are treated as such by government, politicians, employers, and the police, who all control our lives. We are being programmed to think like they want us to think, taking away our free will, freedom of speech, and even our own identity. I think most of the problems of the world are a direct result of interference in our lives by people using propaganda and lies to control the way we do think, which in turn makes us unhappy “lost sheep.” And if we oppose them, they seem to just ignore us anyway and continue with their own agenda, regardless of what the people really want. So rather than following the flock as a mindless sheep, I wanted to break free and make readers aware of the world as I see it. The book starts when I was going through mental anguish and everything started to get me down. I was feeling low, depressed, and unappreciated as a worker, so I started a self-therapy exercise, and began to write down my thoughts. The question you should ask yourself is simple: Do you control your mind or does somebody else control it for you? In Programmed Sheep, M.A. Fricker in his comedy approach brings to the surface what he sees is really going on in the world, and helps stop you from just following the flock. He is working on the sequel, Paranoid Sheep.
Download or read book Girls Only written by Alex Witchel and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What I learned from my father was the boys' lesson of dealing in the world -- trust no one and win the first time. What I learned from my mother was the girls' lesson -- trust no one and win the first time, but just in case you don't, come home, eat something, talk about it, have a drink, cry a little, then go back out there and try again." Armed with these family tenets, Alex Witchel goes soul-searching and shopping with the ever-present help of her mother, Barbara, the "human Swiss Army knife who can do it all," and her sister, Phoebe, Alex's perpetual rival and best friend. These three form a family within a family, and with a passionate unity they offer each other sharp, witty, and (occasionally exasperating) insights on everything from men, pedicures, and careers to sibling rivalry, the challenges of stepparenting, and the pains of aging and loss. Insightful, poignant, and hilarious by turns, Girls Only is a memoir that celebrates the one thing that remains "for women only"...mother/daughter/sister love.

Book Synopsis A Catechism of the Heart by : Benjamin James Brenkert
Download or read book A Catechism of the Heart written by Benjamin James Brenkert and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of twenty-five, Benjamin James Brenkert—a young man from Long Island, a social work student, and an internet vocation to the priesthood—entered one of the historically boldest, influential, apostolic religious orders of the Roman Catholic Church. Aged thirty-four, and a member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in good standing, Brenkert was missioned to the laity by his last religious superior. Brenkert could not come out publicly as a gay Jesuit and support his LGBTQ peers who were being fired from various church employment and volunteer activities because of whom they loved. Brenkert had never concealed his sexuality from his religious superiors, he knew all too well what was written in the Church’s Catechism about homosexuals. Still, he felt uniquely called to respond to God’s invitation to serve him in total love as a priest, something confirmed in him in prayer during his thirty-day silent retreat and affirmed to him by his religious superiors and peers throughout his life in the Jesuits. In his Open Letter to Pope Francis in 2014 Brenkert wrote, “Pope Francis . . . I ask you to instruct the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to tell Catholic institutions not to fire any more LGBTQ Catholics. I ask you to speak out against laws that criminalize and oppress LGBTQ people around the globe. These actions would bring true life to your statement, ‘Who am I to judge?’” In 2015, the United States Supreme Court struck down bans on same-sex marriage in Obergell v. Hodges and in 2020, the United States Supreme Court expanded the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite these landmark achievements in the public sector, LGBTQ Catholics still cannot receive communion and must always seek reconciliation. Their flourishing as part of their religious community is always frustrated. Brenkert’s account of his life before, in, and after the Jesuits is interwoven with trials and tribulations, but remains always full of hope, written candidly and with bracing honesty. Brenkert offers readers the opportunity to join him on a theological and spiritual pilgrimage, one that ends with readers making a discernment. The world today is full of distraction, misinformation, and timidity, Brenkert’s pilgrimage is full of conviction, heartful, written with an eagerness to help people of faith and no faith at all find their true selves, all for the greater glory of God.

Book Synopsis The Devil Can’t Have Me No Matter What by : Mary Wilkerson
Download or read book The Devil Can’t Have Me No Matter What written by Mary Wilkerson and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am just an ordinary person who loves the Lord and wants to spread His Word. My husband and I were caretakers for my mom, who lived with us. My mom always wanted me to write a book, but working a full-time job and being a full-time caretaker leaves little time for anything. Her faith-based life has been an inspiration to me. After my beloved mother, who loved God more than anything, passed away, an overwhelming idea came to me to write an inspirational religious book. I believe this idea came from God. Everything happens in God’s time, not ours. This book is based loosely on my life experiences. Mixed with a touch of humor and a lot of Bible scriptures, I hope this book will help others find God and stay focused on God, despite what life may throw at you. I wanted to write a book a little different than what is out there. I hope I accomplished my mission. God bless you.

Book Synopsis Forty Years in the Closet by : Christopher Duane Duane
Download or read book Forty Years in the Closet written by Christopher Duane Duane and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patchwork construction of this book is like a time worn quilt; a faded tapestry, reminding you of ages past. Memories run together, so emphatic they obscure a diamonds refl ection, clouding what is really true. Having worn edges and faded colored threads, the truth of these tales seems to disappear from the fabric of reality. The histories are all basically true, but at times are prone to whims of fi ction and the fancies of exaggeration. They are told by Christopher Sergeant, a consummate liar, about his family and his travails fi nally fi nding the courage to accept his sexuality. Forty Years in the Closet, along with the stories in the section titled, Illness and Healing, follow Chris tripping along lifes road, kicking and screaming. The narrative is often amusing, yet poignant. It may be inspirational to know that Chris perseveres, amidst all the gory wit and sarcasm, surviving the Sergeant family saga.

Book excerpt: Appalachia has been a place of movement and migration—for individuals, families, and entire communities—for centuries. Beginning Again brings together twelve narratives of refugees, migrants, and generations-long residents that explore complex journeys of resettlement. In their stories, Appalachia—despite how it’s popularly portrayed—is not simply a region of poverty and strife populated only by white people. It is a diverse place where belonging and connection are created despite displacement, resource extraction, and inequality. Among the narratives included: Hear from Claudine Katete, a Rwandan asylum seeker raised in refugee camps who graduated college into the chaos of COVID-19. Follow Amal as she and her family fled war-ravaged Syria and navigated mice-infested housing and unresponsive case workers. Listen to Mekyah Davis, born and raised in Big Stone Gap, as he describes the “slow burn” of everyday racism and his efforts to organize Black Appalachian youth to stay in their communities. Taken together, their stories and more collected here present a nuanced look at life in contemporary Appalachia.
